Yes you can put a newer (2015, 2016, 2017) Subaru Legacy engine into a 2011 (or 2012 or 2013) Forester! A few items need to be swapped from the old engine to the “new” engine in order to fool the engine computer into thinking nothing has changed. Plenty of forums explain what needs to be done, but I haven’t been able to find anyone who has done the swap on KZitem yet.
Here’s a list of things that need to be done:
Coil pack swap-change boots and add a spacer between coil pack and valve cover, used a 3/8 inch nut as spacer
Crank sensor w/mounting plate
Tone wheel behind flex plate
Move knock sensor to back hole
Camshaft sprocket tone wheel swap, remove snap ring and three bolts to remove. P0016&P0018 will occur if these aren’t switched.
Crankshaft Position- Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1&2, Sensor A)
Will throw codes if timing is off, but may still run fine
Timing cover swap with new o-rings and front crank seal- take water pump pulley off to access 2 bolts for cover- check timing while cover is off. Clean old silicone off of cover and mating surface on engine
Coolant crossover pipe w/harness. John Deere O-rings T78313
Swap EGR components to new intake
Use intake manifold from new engine on new engine-swap fuel lines and bracket on intake manifold, throttle body gets moved over
Build extension harnesses for TGV and mount valves on bracket towards back passenger side of engine bay-cannot reverse wires or change from left to right to resolve
P2004&P2006
intake manifold runner control stuck open or closed
New runner has shorter throw, not allowing actuator valves to open fully, thus causing codes
Plug coolant line below passenger cylinder head
Use crank pulley/damper and bolt from new engine
New oil capacity will follow model from which engine was taken: 2017 Legacy
