Gentleman, I'm just a seasoned Ford technician chiming in with what I've experience & encountered. Back in 2011 when the Coyote engine was first realeased, I had at least one Mustang/F150 a week come in with this concern. After tearing down every engine I always found that the crankshaft to main bearing clearances would vary significantly journal to journal abnormally. When discussing with my local FSE & online engineers, I was told that the company responsible for manufacturing the main bearing was having material issues which affected the thermal expansion rates. They had assured me that the driveability would not be affected, so long there is no excess of metal in the oil. I continue to receive vehicles to this day, & my repairs vary from replacing crankshafts/bearings to entire engines, depending on how the engine was treated. In my opinion, drive, enjoy your car, & inspect your oil when servicing, then address as needed.

Now own a 2018 gt and it had a light tick upon getting it and has progressively gotten louder and more consistent just by changing oil brand, not even the weight! Definitely a strange problem. Hope they find a fix soon, for now ceratec seems like the go to product to stop this obnoxious noise! Lol

Bill, I can't say thank you enough for being brave enough to tackle this issue. I've tried to get several you tuber who have a substantial following to try and get answers for us laymen who love these cars. Like you said, a lot of people don't even own a 2018 Mustang and are just commenting on the issue, causing a more confusing frenzy. Then, when you watch these guys who are having the "actual" tick," the buy back horror", and dealerships who don't want to warranty a car....... to be honest it left a lump in throat. I waited three years to get my 2018 because I simply couldn't decide on a color. But when I saw the lighting blue version.....I was sold. I ordered it from Ford and have been receiving numerous compliments everywhere I go. When these issues started to surface, I ran across one you tuber who said that he was going to drive his 2018 and enjoy it. If it broke in any way, he would take it to Ford and Deal with it then. Right then, I got an epiphany. That was the best advise I could have got. I also decided to continue to drive it like a luxury car instead of spirited driving. I planned not going above 70 well after the break in miles, not flooring it and when I change the oil, I would ensure she gets the proper 10qts. I plan to wait until the car says its time to change. I have seen that people with 2018's changed their oil at 500 or 1000 miles! Why is that? Am I doing something wrong?? I have the Ford app and it says that my oil is at 50% of life before I need to change it. Also , I haven't modified it yet to see what transpires, if anything. The only modifications I want to do is, a cold air intake, headers, and a tune. Once again thank you for putting me at ease. I don't own a money tree, but $50 grand is still $50 grand. And by the way, My car don't have the tick. Owners say that it will happen after the first oil change.

Let me start off by saying I don’t have a tick in my car and I have a 2019 a10 hellion twin turbo gt with 1800 miles. Someone else below me made a comment about the engine oil that they use, I like him, use the Joe Gibbs racing 5w50 that has additives already in it to avoid any kind of friction. I’ve had no issues with the tick and my car runs awesome. This issue is way blown out of proportion. Just like every manufacturer, there are bad apples out of the batch. It happens. For the most part most cars are good to go with no issues. Let’s just all enjoy our cars because they are amazing machines. For all of you that have a warranty, if something happens take it in and ford will take care of it. I could care less about a warranty and if something happens I’ll build this motor and make it even better.

high compression rocks the piston more at idle than low compression. don't let any high performance engine idle any more than you have to. excessive idling is never good for any engine, but it's especially not good for engines with high compression, short pistons, and aggressive camshafts.

War Gamer - I know that it has been 10 months since your post. Just wondering if you still have your mustang and how it’s performing with the engine tick. First mustang I have owned was a black 2015 GT auto as seen on my channel. Before I was able to post any other mods other than the exhaust the mustang blew up at 800 miles sitting in my driveway after remote starting it. I went through hell with the dealer where I purchased from. They eventually offered to sell me another Mustang after buying back the 2015 after many many conversations with the (GM). The replacement was a 2016 Mustang GT PP1 that I mildly modded, exhaust, intake graphics etc. That car was amazing with no issues at all, of course I was dumb and sold it locally. I now own a 2019 Mustang GT PP1 Manual. The car had developed the engine tick after driving it home of course. I’ve noticed when cold starting the vehicle and letting it idle down after 5 mins the tick is apparent. Driving the car not to exceed 4,000 rpm’s for approximately 10 mins, the tick dulled slightly to where you couldn’t tell by just walking around the car. My oil was changed at 1,000 miles after the “recommended break-in” using 5w-30 Mobile 1 synthetic and Motor craft oil filter. The tick is still apparent at 1200 miles. I just wanna enjoy my car without having to deal with Ford “Again” in that matter. Looks to be in Inevitable at this point. Any updates would be gladly appreciated, Thanx.

It eventually started having a random knock and tick sound(video on my channel) when it was cold but right when it hit 203cht it went away completely. I pulled the pan and checked all the rod bearings but everything looked perfect. I pulled the timing cover and there was no slack in the chain or weak tensioners. So I pulled the chains and when I grabbed the crank sprocket it had a little wobble on the crank, after removing I noticed the keyway was rounded off. I replaced the sprocket and keyway reassembled everything and so far after about 1000 miles everything is quiet.

Imma tech at a jeep dealership. While I dont see fords really ever I do know about noises that customers hear that are normal. The reason why people have started noticing noises is because the manufactures want to make the car as quite as possible. Its called nvh (noise vibration and harshness) they go to extreme length to lessen all of it. With the absence of some noises others become more prevalent. This sounds completely normal as the hemi and pentastar engines make similar noises, especially when cold starting. Good info in video just wanted to add some stuff and shut down anyone saying "its cuz its a ford"

I had it on my 11 and 12. When Ford would use their oil, tick was gone. They ended up doing quite a bit of work to both of them and after I did an oil change and used Royal Purple the tick came back. So I would say oil has a lot to do with it. I now have an 18 Shelby and so far no tick. My tick only occurred when the oil was clean and up to temp. Once I had 3000 on the oil it wouldn’t do it. The hotter it was outside or the harder I pushed the motor it would tick worse.

He got to tear one down and they came to the conclusion it was the wrist pins in the motor. It holds the pistons to the connecting rod. Totally normal and not harmful ether just trait of the pins they use in manufacturing. If it becomes constant and hard than it’s time to worry.

Especially so if it occurs/heard while driving as well as some manual owners have reported at low RPMs. My '15 GT Whipple never had a tick that I ever noticed. But the 18s/19s seem to be quite common. Bottom line: if you're getting a new GT, you are quite frankly shelling out a good chunk of change to roll the dice that you won't have an annoying issue. I know that it has been 6 months since your post.

I got a new shortblock under warranty in May. 4 oil changes later the tick came back but louder, this time I have longtubes and OPG/timing sprocket. I am trying to have the longblock replaced this time, a couple weeks ago Ford Hotline advised to get my cam phasers replaced, sound is still there and rather loud and happening every day every drive. Stay tuned. I have a procharger in the garage ready to go after I am confident I can push the power.

For any engine noise, anything you do to the oil is a bandaid. The real fix is to build it right. Causes are widespread and never ending...lack of a quality and properly located cylinder liner, bearing problems, excessive con rod side clearance, piston slap... If you want to fix a noisy engine right; tear it down have iron liners properly installed in the perfect bore space, properly fit pistons, connecting rods with proper side clearance, quality bearings... basically building it the way it should be. A random typewriter tap can often be way too much connecting rod side clearance. Should be about .008" - .020". Get way over .020" and on the downward stroke the con rods slam to one side, at BDC and a little crank flex, they get slammed to the other side before the upward stroke. And you hear a random tap. Take an engine with over .020" con rod side clearance and tap the rods back and forth on the crank journal... sound familiar and kinda like a typewriter? Cylinder bore spacing out of whack plays havoc with con rods and side wear. Add in expansion/growth, multiplies the problem. Properly located iron liners lessen that issue probability. Piston slap is obvious. Sounds like a diesel on cold start. Goes away after a few minutes. After many many miles the piston skirts may be so wore down that it even rattles warm. But again, very obvious diesel like sound. Bearing problems also obvious. Remove, inspect, measure clearance. The elusive noise is the con rod side clearance, and bore spacing problems. Might take putting an engine in an oven at 200 for a few hours to see how things look at operating temp to then see... wow the cylinder bore centers are way off and several sets of con rods have way too much side clearance. There is a simple way to build an engine that doesn't make odd random knocking/tapping noises. It's called quality control. And before that... robustness of design.

We just purchased a 2019 with 9000 miles. It is a GT, and not only has it developed "the tick", but it also sounds like a diesel when you are driving and just maintaining speed. When you put a load on the engine, or let off the gas, the noise stops. It is a 6 speed manual. Also, at idle, you can feel a consistent "bump" in the shifter in time with the knock.

I own a 2018 Mustang GT that had 2400 miles on it and had the tick I had it checked they found excessive cylinder scoring in cylinder 3 and they replaced long block. After having the long block put in when I picked up from the dealership it was as quiet as a church mouse. After a hundred miles of driving I could faintly hear the tick. After 650 miles the tick has gotten louder but not as loud as it was when I first got the engine replaced. For the love of God Ford needs to come up with an answer fix these because you can't fix it if you're going to put the same broken parts in it.!!! My 2018 GTpp started the typewriter tick 2 days after my 2nd oil change at the dealer with 5465 miles on the OD. First LOF at 553 break in miles. Hot oil pressure dropped from 20 / 21 down to 16 to 19 psi. Not only can I hear this tick but an intermittent low knocking sound is apparent as well right along with the tick. The two different sounds do not appear to be associated. I can hear the knock through the firewall with the windows closed. I am going to drop off the car at the local dealer this coming week. FoMoCo's TSB 7718 dismisses the sound as "normal". Imo that is a BS cover your butt answer. As a machine shop owner and performance engine builder some questions come to mind. If the sound is normal what is causing it? If you can not answer the former how do you know it is harmless? If this (normal) is the case why don't ALL Gen 3 Coyote engines make the sound. Why the appearance in some cases after a dealer LOF? Why do additives and friction modifiers offer a temporary fix? At 553 miles I discussed the slapping sound these engines make at about 1500 to 2500 rpm with my local service manager. We went out and started several other Gt's and all made that sound. Reminds me of the Corvette piston slap drama back in the 90's. I understand and accept that DI engines are noisy. I can pick out and overlook the reasonably normal cacophony of sounds emanating from this engine. What I am hearing now is unacceptable in a $47K+ new car. SJ

LISTEN. I finally have the real answer. Bad rod bearing (or bearings) … I just got my long block replaced for the SAME EXACT noise in my 2017 mustang GT and ford only listened to me when after I showed up five different times and basically wasn’t taking ‘it’s fine’ for an answer. But beware, if it’s under warranty and they replace it you’ll get a remanufactured motor and the mechanics get paid less when they do warranty fixes (warranty is cost x, fixes when customer pays are cost +30%). So long story short I’ve been through two reman blocks and each one was jacked up but for different reasons. Out of the three blocks I had in that mustang (one factory and two reman), the only one that had the tick was the one that was torn down to find a spun rod bearing and metal shavings in the oil.

@AriLB26

Believe me everyone and their mom has an opinion on what this noise could be, but when something is failing / not controlled there’s a chance it’s going to be inconsistent. Theory and real life are different; and given my lengthy experience with this noise, multiple trips to ford, them tearing the engine down completely and them finding a bad rod bearing, and finally them replacing the motor to have the noise completely go away, I do firmly believe that is what the noise is. I’m sure they would rather have just replaced the oil pump vs the whole blockif it was that simple?

From the looks of these comments I am feeling better about my own personal opinion. The slap is coming from poor break in. People changing oil too soon. Some have changed it at 500 miles. The manual clearly states 5k miles unless driven hard. Then 3k. Even says if commuted it can make it to 10k miles. Those who have changed their oil later are not having issues. Those who have because they are panicking over it, are developing issues. I cant confirm it, but I feel it is part of it.

@@selaudinagolli4638 Ford has additives in the oil to help it break in. There is a special liner installed in the cylinder wall. The manual does not say change the oil at 500 miles. It actually says do not load the motor until 1k miles. Thats it. No mention of break in oil changes. It addresses oil changes at the increments I stated. When you dump those additives out at 500 miles or even 1k miles, I believe it is causing the problem. My dealer told me bring it in at 5k miles. My father bought an F150 at a different dealer. Interesting theory you have there. You might be onto something . Because it does seem like many people complain the tick right after their first oil change @ 500 or 1,000 miles. Now, I’ve changed the oil on my last two new Ford vehicles at 1,000 miles (only for the 1st oil change), and had no problems or tick, but then again they weren’t the updated V8 from the ‘17, 18’, 19’ Mustangs. Btw, one of my Fords has a 2016 Coyote V8 that runs flawlessly with 38K. However, I think in the future I’m going to do what you’re saying and just follow the manual recommendations when I buy my next new vehicle.

I have a 2019 GT pp1. I didn't have the tick but I did get a longblock replacement under warranty (1.5 month process). The initial diagnosis was at around 500 miles. You could hear a dull knocking coming from the engine, the car would occasionally have a very rough idle, and it was down on power to the point that it would really hesitate to move under 3000 RPMs. Metal was also discovered in the oil filter. The damage was to a camshaft and cam journal being scored. So far the new engine seems okay. It's noisy, and it occasionally squeals during a cold start (below freezing right now so I'm not too worried), but the engine itself feels great. No loss of power and it pulls hard from a stop. Also, no tick. I dumped the 5w20 and put in penz plat 5w30 (dexos gen2 and api sn + certified) the moment I got the car home. I've only put about 200 miles on the new engine, but so far so good.

Ford isn’t going to do a recall unless it presents a safety issue, they have replaced engines that have excessive scoring.

@@cjponyparts we are all just wanting a corrected part so our engines don't self destruct outside of warranty. I've been thru 2 engines and some have had the same or more. This isn't a just a fluke it's real and a real problem. I would like to think that its minimal but I am just an average blue collar man and I have had 2 of these. If it was a minimal problem then i just got hit by lightning twice. What are the odds of that. Plus i have messaged zander before and his 19 is a June engine build and he has no problem. My 2nd is a August build so by rights it's a 19 motor and it still has the problem. Something isn't right here. It's a real problem. We all just want to know that they acknowledge the problem and that they can tell us what went wrong and this is how they are correcting it for the future engine swaps. They cant just ignore it and keep moving on while we all have sunk our hard earned money into the cars and are stuck....we need to know what the solution to the problem is and how they fixed it. Scoring is scoring there is no hiding it. And having us all use ceratec cannot be the answer. I love ford and my mustang I just want it to be fixed and move on with life..i dont have a KZitem channel I'm just a normal person.

tb12269 theres nothing wrong with the engine, your hearing noises that exist in every engine more pronounced because of the ceramic oil pan. Ford is not going to admit to a problem that does not exist.

Bill, my 2018 has been flawless... both the engine and the MT82 trans. FWIW, the Gen1 5.0L in my F150 makes more "noise" than the Gen3 does in my Mustang.

2016Mustang I wouldn't put that stuff in my engine, if anyone is concerned about hearing what the think is excessive noise (tick) I would run a higher weight oil like what has been recommended by some here.

Thank you!! Glad we (as the Mustang community) can finally level set on what the "bbq tick" most likely is!

He’s wrong about the composite pan unless ford uses a shitty pan. A composite pan is actually how the Diesel engine makers have made diesels a bit quieter among other things. The traditional metal pans transmit more noises.
