Great video showing the upgrade of all the 3 major components. I have a couple of questions: 1. What wireless card is the Omen coming with? The Intel 9560? 2. You put a 2 Tb sshd but on the HP website I found that they support max of 1tb hdd. I am curious if you can put a 1tb SSD and 1tb NVME
@TechFinds
5 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for commenting. If it comes to wireless card I don't know but it was working well for me. I installed 2TB SSHD and it was working so any HDD will be working too - it would be stupid if they limited the max capacity of HDD that you can install in a gaming laptop. I have never seen such limits. You can also install a 2.5' SSD instead of HDD and swap out the existing M.2 SSD with a bigger capacity. 2018 Omen supports NvMe M.2.

@TechFinds

You can add a 2.5" HDD or SSD to your empty 2.5" drive bay and you can swap out your M.2 SSD for a bigger one if you want. Just keep in mind that you will need to re-install system on the new M.2 SSD if you swap it out. You can go for any RAM from the links, but it's important to match the specs as close as possible with the original RAM to pair. Anything from the links will work with your RAM, but the best for Omen is Crucial. If you buy 2 sticks of the same RAM you can go for others.

You can add/replace both or only one RAM stick. It doesn't have to be exactly the same. Brand doesn't really matter, but it's important to match the specs as close as possible. For Omen you should be looking for 2666MHz CL19 RAM if you wanna mix with original RAM. Hi so i bought this laptop and I've been loving it so far, but I have questions about upgrading the SSD and RAM. For the SSD, I want to upgrade it to the Samsung 970 Evo, how would I transfer the data from the SSD that came with it to the new SSD(it has my OS in it)? For the RAM, I want to upgrade from 12gb RAM to 16GB RAM, could I replace the 4GB RAM stick with an 8gb RAM stick from different brands with the same type of drive?
@TechFinds

Yes, the system is installed on your SSD so you will have to reinstall it i guess. I mean that you have to install new system on Evo 970 but to be honest i have never installed system in other way than from recovery partition. Recently i red somewhere about that but not carefully because that wan not the info i was looking for. However people said that you can get some necessary tools from Windows's site and you'll have to install it from pendrive. You don't have to buy new OS, easy. :) I think you'll just have to prove that you have original windows so they will give you a coppy. Look around the internet to find out more about how to do it. Sorry that i can't help more. If it comes to RAM you can replace 4gb stick with 8gb of other brand but as you said it should be the same type at least.

The sshd is no where close to an ssd like Samsung 860 Evo. I was gonna buy one but after I watched many tests its actually very close to an hdd. So I bought my self 2 tb Samsung 860 evo for 350$ from bhphotovideo.com. And my omen already came with 256gb M.2 ssd for the operating system. And now by replacing my 1tb hdd slow hdd with 2tb Samsung 860 evo I feel my laptop is complete. I would suggest 860 evo its the best ssd out there. Make sure it's 860 and not 850 since 850 is outdated and slower than the new 860 evo.
@TechFinds
6 жыл бұрын
Mat Off, while let's say 1st run of system or game on new SSHD it will perform close to HDD but after 2nd, 3rd, 4th time the difference is huge. It is because SSHD has to learn which data should be put on to the flash memory for quick access, so the data that you use often will be right there. But the thing that interests me the most is if SSHD has some kind of it's own memory, because i'm guessing that you can't open every game, programm or app on your PC few times so the hybrid drive could add all of their data for quick access. Ofc SSD will perform faster anyway and the EVO 860 is a great one but look at the difference in price.

The only thing you can upgrade to get better performance is RAM and it won't change very much if we're talking about games. 16GB (2x8) is totally enough. You can only see a major difference upgrading from 8GB to 16 for example, or in some cases from 1x16GB to 2x8GB

Hello Tech Finds, I'm hoping to upgrade my RAM but when buying, I get confused about why is the 3200MHz cheaper than the 2666MHz on the 16GB (8GB x2) option. Does it negatively impact my laptop if I buy a higher speed? Mainly because I've read that some of these 2666MHz have been returned to Amazon due to actually being 2400MHz instead of 2666MHz as advertised. Thanks in advance
@TechFinds
3 жыл бұрын
This laptop supports up to 2666MHz anyway so if you would buy 3200MHz it would downclock. The stories with RAM working with lower frequency than advertised may be because of missmatching RAM (mixing different specs sticks) which may result downclocking.

Thanks for answering my questions much better than the HP video did. One point about the HDD's cable: HP recommends releasing the ribbon cable at its connection, not pulling the HDD's (larger) connector. Given how fragile ribbon can be, I agree with HP on this item. Tug on the HDD connector and the ribbon might fail or tear or not.
@TechFinds
5 жыл бұрын
Yep, that's why I said to be careful here. I find disconnecting the bigger part from HDD easier because I had really hard time to connect the little end back to the motherboard. I could eventually scratch the motherboard. I had the same cable in Asus ROG Strix Scar II and I did so but fortunetly nothing happened to laptop.

My final question this laptop have 8 gb ram if I put another 16 gb ram will they function cooperatively?
@TechFinds

Yes, you can install 1x16GB RAM stick if you already have 8gb. You will have 24GB in total (the laptop supports up to 32GB). If it comes to SSD of course it's more convinient to use an internal one. You can replace this optane one with different M.2 SSD or you can install the secondary 2.5" SSD instead of HDD. If it's 580mb/s you're probably talking about 2.5" SATA SSD. Seagate is a good brand but I always recommend Samsung Evo 860 for a 2.5" SSD.
