TMF - this has been one of the BEST bike reviews I have come across. Just stumbled across a 2019 Speedmaster at a local dealer yesterday which has been kitted out a bit with floorboards, windscreen, upgraded seat, upgraded pillion back rest, Mini ape bars and maybe one or two other bits and bobs. The bike looked sweet and felt fantastic to sit on. Got me interested in digging up a bit of info on Speed Master and so found your review. Excellent review and very helpful. Unfortunately I am not in the position to upgrade my current bike for at least 6 to 8 months, otherwise I would be back at the dealer tomorrow to take the bike for a test ride and go from there.......

Just bought the 2022 Speedmaster; I think they saw this review as many of those issues over time that you mentioned are now resolved. The lights are now controlled by just one switch and the gauge lights are green for daytime and blue for nighttime. Simple fix. The pillion seat is about 1/2 inch thicker, and I bought the back pad and luggage rack that makes it much more comfortable for the 2nd rider, plus luggage. The brakes are awesome, so not sure if they enhanced them, but they did put on thicker forks (47mm.) The exhaust sound is just as brilliant as your riding review, no aftermarket exhaust necessary. .It now comes with the comfort seat - about as comfortable as any seat can be. Tank color is awesome as I bought the Goldline, but when cruising it gets about 160 miles on a full tank, or close to 60mpg. No complaints. If you push it, then yes, about 130 miles on a tank. I love the single instrument gauge. It has all the information I need at the press of a button. Oh, traction control is awesome too, along with 2 riding modes, rain, which brings down the torque, or road, which kicks butt. ABS can be disengaged. Wind blast can be reduced with a touring screen (I bought aftermarket flyscreen and touring screen.) Oh, scraping pegs, no problem, but I added a footboard which allows a little more lean before scraping. Thanks for your excellent in depth review. It helped me make the choice over a Harley :)

I test rode a standard Speedmaster and a Speedmaster with the "Highway Build" option (windscreen, better saddle, panniers, etc) and the windscreen and comfort seat made a huge difference in riding enjoyment. Actually, it feels like a different bike and a more capable long distance machine (except the fuel tank capacity is the one major drawback). I'll also add that here in the U.S. we love all things British and Triumph's turn lots of heads at our bike meets. Three cheers for Triumph as they capture more U.S. market share with quality products at reasonable price points.

I test rode a Triumph Thunderbird a few years ago, barrelling into a corner, heel touched the deck and ripped my foot clean of the peg, nearly went straight off the road. An excellent and informative review as ever, TMF, thanks! Is it just me (probably is!) but why do so many bikes come with such an inadequate front mudguard (aka fender) these days? Probably a matter of style over function. The guard on that Speedmaster is obviously just going to allow the engine and front end to be permanently sandblasted, or worse allow the front wheel to propel high speed gravel missiles at the radiator . You can see the crud that has been thrown at the radiator of the bike at around the 15 minute mark in your video. The mudguard is so short you also couldn't even add a functional fender extender to it. My Diavel was just the same. I like to keep my bikes looking mint, which would be difficult to do with a non-functioning front mudguard. Then again, as I say, it's probably just me and my pristine bike OCD!

To my surprise given my general tastes in motorcycles, I really like the look of this. It also seems like Triumph has paid attention to it's capabilities, and not just how it looks - unlike just about any other company that builds anything cruiser-ish. I would think if that rear subframe is designed to take a passenger, it should be able to handle a pair of aluminum panniers. But is there any company making them to fit this bike? That would make the bike perfect for day-to-day use. Or a decent sized trunk?

One thing you'll learn about cruisers if you spend any time on them on the highway is that you will build some serious muscle. You'll get a nice hard stomach fighting the upper body wind blast and some inner thighs that could crack a nut from fighting the wind that's trying to force you legs apart like an angry gynecologist. When I had them, my inner thighs would always be sore the first couple weeks of the new riding season. Floorboards make a world of difference. Pretty sure Triumph makes a set for this bike. A windscreen too.

Fuel cap is beautiful but when you have extra keys on the ring such as the one for your disc and chain lock you have to be careful they don't scratch the paint which they will do if you remove and replace the cap carelessly. Hi TMF - yes, as others have noted, a very well balanced review. I’ve had mine since the summer and had the sissy bar, engine protectors, V&H pipes, heated grips and lots of other goodies fitted. I haven’t yet decided on bags, like you I don’t like the Harley-type leather arrangements, so I’ve been using a ruck sack and that doesn’t work for overnighters. The lack of a centre stand is a problem. I bought bobbins and a paddock stand and it just doesn’t do it, so chain maintenance is a problem. Front suspension travel is a little limited but generally not an issue. Early grounding of the foot pegs enforces a slight change in riding style but again not an issue. However, like you have observed - what a fun bike - it is a great bike and one I’m proud to own. I’ve been away for the past week and really missing it - what more is there to say!! Thanks again and hope to meet up on Sunday? Yours aye, Alan

Very low seating position, your body will be C-shaped when riding. When riding around six hours, I guess your lower back will hurt (mine will) because your spine no longer has the optimal double S-shape. You can stretch it at the many fuel stops. The bike looks well off course, a lot of bling but it's notvery versatile. Not a problem if you can affort a bike for every type of riding. If you can't: buy a sport tourer or even better an all road. These bikes can do everything at a high level.

TheMissendenFlyer Yes, but only on a couple of round abouts. I generally cruise fairly sedately and find that 15-20 mph above recommended corner speed signs is doable except for hairpins that need more respect. Australian country roads are not the best but I find the Speedmaster handles the bumps firmly but confidently. I always counter steer and find it easy to maintain my chosen line with this bike. I’m not a youngster and doubt that I will ever test it’s true capability. Thanks for your advice. I have been “pottering around” and I think changing to 3rd gear too soon.

I'm picking up my Speedmaster in a week or two. Can't wait! Your comments about the centre stand are interesting ... I haven't owned many cruisers, but I've ridden a few, and they have all been guilty of this omission. It isn't available as an option for the Speedmaster, either. I think it might be a ground clearance issue, but I don't know for sure. Or perhaps an aesthetic consideration? Anyway, a couple of paddock stand bobbins on the rear frame do the trick for cleaning and oiling.

I REALLY don't like the "key on the side" thing. That's going to get stuck on your pants or something, or you're going to hit it some how and it will break the key and you'll be annoyed. There's a good reason why they usually putt the key in front of you. Other then that my only problem with the bike is that it's called a "speedmaster" but speed isn't really its thing. The rest of the bike seams Really great to me. I have no issues with the single instrument or anything else. (i have not ridden it, so i'm taking your word for everything)

I have a 2011 Triumph America, pushing 40,000 miles. I am pushing 71 yrs, riding cruisers all my life, long distances. Last month I rode to Atlanta & back 1k+ miles, a week ago, Charlotte NC and back, 500miles. Note: Speedmaster/America... similar forward pegs. I know, not quite the same. But there is no 2018 America. I have the money for (sorta - or soon will) and deperately WANTED to lust for this bike. I thought they might have thought of something to add to a forward peg cruiser that I wanted, plus, I like the satisfaction of buying something new. But, after seeing all its ridiculous 'upgrades' I no longer want one. I am crestfallen about that. The seat sucks, I can't ask my girl to perch on that thing, needing to pay too much attention to acceleration lest she fall off the back. The new tank is too damn small! I have often skipped fueling accidenttally then found myself on the 1 gallon reserve of my 5 gallon tank... after 180 miles. Spoke wheels? Really? in between brake rotors? HOW do you keep them clean and sparkly exactly? A pita for sure. Plus... you need TUBES! really, did you never get a flat in the desert? Motor is too damn big. What the heck, my 865cc is fully capable of criminally high expressway speeds. There is no racing allowed on public highways and... winding out the 865 is 95% as much fun as winding out a big motor and... you need to stop accelerating by 80mph or so anyway. I much prefer the lighter power to weight ratio ... and resultant relaxed yet responive handling attitude ...of the America. ABS? Avoid gravel. Traction control? Rain mode? Really? This isn't some thousand pound road going thing. You will be lucky to stand the wind buffeting and whining passenger for more than an hour. Why introduce all the complicated wiring? Great, I guess, till something goes haywire. THEN the bike is at the mercy of the super-secret unavailable to me diagnostic tools. NO THANKS. Like many, I enjoy my doing own maintenance and all the things the shop has no time to do. If on the Speedmaster the little green light does not work? I'm paying out the exhaust for someone else to tear it apart as they recklessly rush it as the shop foreman tells them to hurry up. The America has just the right amount of sensors and ECU to keep it modern yet understandable and serviceable. The new street twin is too cramped, no forward pegs. The wheelbase on the America is almost a foot longer, more rake and more trail... a CRUISER. Relax, watch for cars trying to kill you, but, relax. And you are cruising, not racing. The Speedmaster is no racing machine, so, it needs to be streched out for more straight line / usual curves handling. To me, the America LT, with it's long comfy wheelbase, forward pegs, powerful twin, long-trip pleasant mufflers, funtional windscreen, great seat and pillion, cast wheels and tubeless tires, 200 mile range, simple maintenance and down to earth wiring is a far more desirable machine than the new Speedmaster for those who want to ride more than a few miles per day. I think the America is the best cruiser ever made by anyone anywhere, and that modern (2006 or so +) Triumph quality is fantastic. So it is that I sadly turn away from the salesman at the Speedmaster store. I wanted to want it. I wanted an equally practical and comfortable and cleanable and distance worthy machine as the America. The Speedmaster ain't it.

Just rode one, right hand went dead after 4miles!Then buttocks after ten,the right knee gave me grip!Lower back after less than 20 miles, not a bike for touring!Fuelling was snatchy, vibrated under 3Thou revs, but engine pulled like a train, handling got better the faster I went, not what I was looking for, massively disappointed! If you where to just cruise on this bike at low speeds the vibration would do your head in!The engine wants to go fast, not suited to this style of bike.More like a street fighter. My regular ride is a z1000,this bike felt more aggressive than my Z!Great for shocking sports bike riders tho!(If you can stand the lower back pain,)

A nice bike in it's class. As with all nakeds i find the addition of a small inexpensive screen makes a lot of difference on a motorway, just takes blast of chest..

Twin clocks dont suit it, its styled towards a chopper/harley look, but would look better in chrome/brushed stainles, same as the engine case's chrome.

Solid wheels would be a plus so you can go tubeless tires which are safer, not prone to a quick release of all the air like a tube can do when it splits. Tubeless tires are easily repaired with a plug kit. Always have a way to inflate. I have had to plug a tire at a rest stop as I happened to get off the bike and heard a hiss of air and saw a screw in my back tire. I was able to get my kit out, remove the screw as I inserted the tool that is used to prepare the hole, and that stopped the leaking, and then I prepared the other tool with the plug and after rasping the hole a bit, quickly changed to the plug inserting tool and lost so little air, I could ride off safely at interstate speeds to get air at the next town. Even so, it doesn't always work out so well, so I say, carry a way to inflate.

Having a centre stand on cruiser is a recipe for disaster, they have little ground clearance as it is, a centre stand would make it even less, look at a corner and it would scrape.

I love the look of the bobber but I’m old, 3 discs gone in my back and have had a double hip replacement and so I want something comfortable to ride. Just saw another vid of a speedmaster where the guy had changed the handlebars and cleaned up the back end … So it has the look of the bobber but all of the comfort of the speed master 🤔🤔🤔🤔

The headlight switch is completely logical because you use it to switch on your headlights. With the switch in DRL position you can use the hi/lo beam switch to flash the headlight. With the headlights turned on the hi/lo switch is used to... well, switch the headlights to high or low beam. On most cars the headlights switch automatically from DRL to headlights on but on a bike you have to actually switch the lights on. Logical, no?

The stock seat is horrible. The comfort seat they offer as an option is somewhat better. The stock bars are useless at highway speeds. I switched them for Bonneville bars. I also swapped the forward foot controls for mid controls like on the Bobber. Being able to stand on the foot pegs is important, allowing you to unweight yourself when encountering potholes etc. Now it's perfect for me. I also added a small windscreen to take a bit of the blast of my torso, but still keeping my helmet in clean air. I am 5'7".

Cruiser guys tend to wear an open helmet and a very serious face with the expression "I'm the center of the universe ". When they ride in a group that serious face becomes even more serious. Maybe that's why the other riders aren't fond of them? Also it's hard to ride together with a crouser guy- cause they wear open helmets and often clothes which exposes the skin they tend to ride very slowly on the highway. Riding highway speeds is of course very uncomfortable when small particles constantly bombarding your skin.

£98 a year for insurance? That seems low compared to the $356 a year I pay for my 2014 Tiger 800 XR here in the US (Washington State). Is it because we’re more litigious? By the way, I’m 64 with a very good record. I really enjoy your videos and will follow you on Instagram. Thanks!
