Volkswagen’s GTI pretty much invented the “hot hatch” category when it debuted in 1976. And who doesn’t like the idea of a car that can easily carry enough for a weekend getaway while also offering the power, handling, and looks of a sports - or at least sporty - car? The 2018 GTI gets the bump to 210 hp that was reserved for the Sport trim in 2017 across the lineup, which is great, because that Sport trim is no longer available. The GTI isn’t as fast as the Golf R, which looks less potent but has an additional 70 hp, but it looks speedier and costs less.
The 2018 GTI’s interior is more polished and better put together than the Ford Focus ST’s or the Subaru WRX’s. The base infotainment system supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, although our reviewer found the new bezel for the 8-inch touchscreen in the SE and Autobahn trims, which includes touch-capacitive buttons, problematic when wearing gloves or when bracing a hand for stability.
