I've owned two CR-Vs, a RAV-4, and am now on my 2nd CX-5. The latest is the 2019 CX-5 Signature model. All of these have been great vehicles, and I never regretted my choices. I think the newer ones seems better to me, but then again, every new car I buy has more and newer features which probably makes them seem better. The Mazda may not have the cargo space of some of the others, but it sure beats them all as a fun vehicle to drive. And the Signature model is LOADED with features, way more than my wife's 2018 Mercedes C300.

Mel, Yeah, an Acura RDX would be nice with its Super Handling AWD but for the $38,000. of a CX 5 Signature v.s. the base RDX means many fewer features in the RDX. And I'll bet the Consumer Reports ratings for the 2019 RDX is no better than the CX 5 - if as good. The CX 5 rates "Much Better Than Average".

@@rv3144 To me it's ridiculous the high specs they put on these compact SUV's and the way it drives the price up. The lower end models make sense because they are supposed to be "economy" models, once you go top of the line you start paying the price of better vehicles IMO. I'd like the Turbo CX5 engine, but am not prepared to pay the price for the models they put it in for a daily driver/commuter vehicle.

Just picked up a 19 Forester Sport, honestly I like it so far. Yea the controls for the screens take some getting use to but it's not terrible. I don't think the top trim of any of these aside from probably the Tuscon is the best value of for the class, nor will they be the volume trims sold or leased for each model. Mid-trim specs would be appreciated since they don't usually get the biggest wheels and will greater represent what will be seen on the roads.
@stephenhendricks103
5 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, comparing "mid-trim" models involves lots of caveats. What is a "mid-trim" vehicle from one manufacturer may be more appropriately compared to top trim from another. Manufacturers typically make their top trim vehicles available to reviewers (if they meet the upper limit price criterion) because they want to demonstrate the range of features available on a particular vehicle. Comparing top trims also involves some caveats but at least the comparison is between what manufacturers consider their "best" examples.
@afcgeo882
5 жыл бұрын
Stephen Hendricks it’s actually very easy, if you bother to do a couple of hours of research. Most companies package them fairly similarly in order to be competitive. The issue is that the manufacturers only lend the top trims to show off. If they could borrow from dealers, it’d be different. Ready? @@afcgeo882 I'll take your word for the comparisons, George. But a number of reviewers DO borrow examples of vehicles from dealers rather than reviewing manufacturer supplied vehicles. The difficulty is that few dealers are prepared to lend a reviewer a vehicle for a week or more for a detailed review. So reviews of dealer supplied vehicles usually consist of a "walk around," an examination of the interior, and, at best, a short test drive. And unfortunately some of those reviews look more like infomercials for a dealer than an objective review.

I recall many years back when radio controls were added to the steering column for safety reasons, now you have these touch screens where you cannot operate them without looking. The knobs and switches could be located in older cars, either just from memory, or the briefest glance to locate it and send your hand there. Trying to operate a touch screen while driving with bumps and dip in the road requires you to look as you do it as there is no where to locate your finger/hand as in an actual switch of some type.

My wife and I were set to buy a Rav4, but after test driving a $38,000+ MSRP (marketing is smoking some good stuff on this one) Limited version, we couldn't believe how loud the engine was, how poorly it shifted, the road noise, and how jarring the ride was. Also, faux leather and no power passenger seat for $38K? We were squirming in the seats after about 10 minutes when we drove the Tuscon as they were very firm and uncomfortable (leather seats in the Limited trim). We won't even consider the Nissan because of the high failure rate of the Jatco CVT. Honda has a very sluggish CVT and boring styling. And so on and so forth. But even those reports have to be used with caution when applied to a model for which there may be only a few reports. And even with more caution for new or recently updated models where the differences between the most and least reliable models is minuscule. JD Power ratings are sometimes useful, as well. But JD Power is an advertising firm with all that that implies. The folks at cars.com make clear that their ratings are subjective and based on a week's experience with (in this case) five vehicles. Hardly in depth analyses. And they further note both in this video and in the accompanying article (unfortunately a source that requires actual reading) that the vehicles reviewed are very, very close in terms of overall ratings and a consumer's choice depends on many factors including that consumer's own priorities. And they specifically avoid "recommending (vehicles) to buy."

For those wondering where the Mazda CX-5 is in this comparison, the accompanying article from cars.com says that Mazda was invited to provide a CX-5 but "...Mazda declined participation at this time." There are almost always one or more brands missing from comparative reviews like this and the reasons are seldom clear. Sometimes the answer is as simple as a manufacturer not having a press vehicle available at a particular time in a particular location. In other cases a manufacturer may believe their vehicle will not show well in comparison to one or more rivals. And in some cases a manufacturer may feel an earlier review of a model by a particular site/publication was unfair/incomplete and the brand withholds a model as a sort of punishment. (See TFL.cars relationship with Subaru for an example of the last situation.) From the site/publication's point of view there's no advantage in limiting the range of vehicles included in a comparative review. More eyeballs are always preferable to fewer eyeballs, conspiracy theories notwithstanding.

Norm T considering the number of cars owned, they’d need thousands of samples of each model to get a decent and accurate sample size. They’re in the dozens right now. Seem to me that the Mazda CX5 would have made the cut especially for 2019 with the added turbo engine and executive interior. Other notable compact SUV would be the Kia Sportage, Ford Escape, GMC Terrian, Chevy Equinox. A lot of compact SUV out there I understand they couldn't get them all in the comparison test. I wanted to like CRV & Rav-4, I liked the Mazda CX-5 better, I drove to VW store not expecting to like the Tiguan and I fell in love as soon as I got in the driver seat and got on the road. I was immediately sold and told the salesman, let’s go inside and work the numbers, and I left with it 2.5 hours later!! It still feels like the right choice. If I had a tiny complaint, I would have preferred cloth interior but only the base S trim offers cloth. I also wish my SE has an adjustable front center armrest. CRV has sport mode if you want to feel no delay time. This video is too much for showing off the delay time of CRV but not really like that ! - I feel very comfortable when sitting at back seats on Rav4 2019. Did you adjust the front seat properly ?! People are taller 1.8m and fit and still have spaces! - And also, VW is more reliable than Rav4, I dont think so. Rav4 model is most selling models until now. Norm T Honda has NEVER sold they cars to ANY fleet except to Zipcar. However, most rental companies do re-sell cars they purchase from financing companies in bulk. That’s what you’re seeing from Enterprise. The Accords, Civics, and Acuras are terminated leases from banks. Banks usually sell them at NADA auctions by the dozens, and a few years, a few large used car sellers like CarMax and rental fleet sakes managers caught onto it. They take them off the banks’ hands for even less, but banks avoid transport and auction fees and get guaranteed sales. These are NOT old rental cars. Even Zipcar turns them back into Honda at the end of their life and doesn’t just sell them through Avis. The Truth About Cars is wrong. Yeah, that happens. A lot.
