Good review! Note that the 12.5 hours "home charge" time is based on using a 32 AMP 7.4 kW type-2 plug. Charging this on a regular 10A 240v plug would take up to 38 hours for a full charge. In the US you could double this for 110v using the same AMP.

Reliability based on what? If you looking for Jaguar's historical reliability performance, I have dozens of jokes I can tell you. Let's let them make a few and see the warranty before we make any judgments. Benchmark: Model X and Model S warranty is 8 years, unlimited miles.
@Richie5903

8 year 100k on the battery 3 year unlimited miles on the car .. Tesla in the uk 8 year unlimited on the battery and 4 years on the car. I think Jaguar are being completely fair and realistic , where I think tesla are being a little naive backing the battery with a warranty like that. Good for the customer , not so much for the company. The i-pace has already had 1.5 million test miles done and will be in customers hands at the start of the summer.

Remember the 2014 Rav4 EV with Tesla batteries? It's just not profitable for them. Last April 2018, Jack Hollis, VP of Toyota North America, basically said "the market doesn't justify the expense." Even the Rav4 hybrid has sold only 2,600 units since 2015, while the regular Rav4 sells about 400,000 units annually in the U.S.

In 2017, total EV & PHEV sales of all brands in the U.S. were 200,000 units, with Tesla accounting for 50,000 of those sales. While 50,000 nearly rivals Porsche's total sales, Toyota sold 2.1 million cars (over 109,000 are Prius); Honda sold 1.5 million cars (less 3000 hybrids), so their future is just fine. I would agree that GM & FCA's future is in doubt, since they were bailed out before.

That's opinion, of course. Tesla has a minimalist interior, not a busy box of switches and dials. Coachwork (lots of leather, contrast stitching, LazyBoy recliners) is different for older makers like Mercedes for sure. But that doesn't seem to deter Tesla sales.
@pW-kb8xs
6 жыл бұрын
ArthurDentZaphodBeeb It is personal taste I think. I estimate that the okder you are, the more you will prefer the Jag interior, the younger Tesla wins. The building quality of Tesla has become much better than it was. I drove a Tesla model S build in January 2017 and the quality was so much better than the one I saw last, a car build in 2013. The Jag wins on price, but Tesla has a huge advantage because of their own loading facilities, the navigation plans the loading in a very intelligent way. For instance when you drive from London to Glasgow, the nav says where to load. That is never to load up to 100%, but to that level that you arrive with the least time loading, based on the fact that the first part loads the quickest, the last the slowest. It really works. Etcetera, etcetera. By the way, I do not drive Tesla or Jaguar, can't afford them....Both cars are great and the future.
@justsomeguy934
6 жыл бұрын
My Model S's fit and finish are great, never a problem. If you're equating lots of stitching, lots of leather, knobs and buttons as luxury then by all means get a Porsche. Clearly Tesla didn't try to out-fit a Rolls Royce on their interior. Many times I've observed that coachwork in a Mercedes is excellent. If you want to buy in to the parts and repair payment plan (it's really an annuity for the car maker) labeled Mercedes, be my guest. In a Tesla, however, you're buying the tech, not leather-covered switches.

12:05 Regarding cold weather range reduction, it may be worth elaborating. I believe this is due mostly/entirely to heating the cabin with energy from the battery. (I think the battery itself actually quite likes being cold.) And the I-Pace uses a type of heater that is more expensive & energy efficient than you'd typically find. (It's called a heat pump.) So the range reduction is less of a problem than most other EVs. As a scrooge I'd probably leave my jacket on to save some electricity, even though per mile costs are already much less than for combustion vehicles!
@justsomeguy934
6 жыл бұрын
The battery does NOT like the cold. There is a narrow band of temperature - the lower end starting around 50 degrees fahrenheit - that the batteries perform best. Don't confuse battery performance with cabin heating. The i-Pace suffers the same performance issues in cold weather as any other EV, not less. Now about cabin heat: that can be done two ways, resistance heat (e.g., Tesla) or heat pump (Leaf, most other EVs). Resistance heat is the most expensive energy-wise but the warmest for the occupants; a heat pump is good as long as you don't want toasty feet in sub-zero weather. Many of the newer EVs have a hybrid heat pump, which looks like a good compromise.
@peterford5408
6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I thought most EVs don't have heat pumps but now I see that is questionable. Teslas don't, Chevys don't, and many Leafs don't. But many other brands *do*. So I shouldn't have made that claim without detailed sales data (which I don't have). Here is a corrected version: _So the range reduction is less of a problem than it is for Teslas, Chevys, and many Nissan Leafs._
@justsomeguy934
6 жыл бұрын
Um, I guess you mean less range is lost heating the cabin in an i-Pace than in a Tesla. That may be true, but also realize that Tesla chose resistance heat for a reason - comfort. If the i-Pace cannot keep the cabin warm in sub-zero temperatures, it's not much use (or so was the reasoning of Tesla). Another factor: Tesla (like many other EVs) have seat and steering wheel heating. You'd be amazed at how cool the interior cabin can be if you heat your backside and hands. That's the first thing you do if you're in dire need of energy conservation - turn down cabin temp and heat your butt.
@peterford5408
6 жыл бұрын
Well the I-PACE was certainly tested in cold weather. Presumably Jaguar will have done whatever was necessary to ensure the air temperature can be controlled in all circumstances. The base model has two-zone climate control (with four-zone climate control a £600 upgrade). I suppose we'll find out for sure next time some reviewers get hold of it (as long as that's not in Portugal again!) But if you're worried, yes heated seats and steering wheel are also available.
@MICHGO1

I contacted the Jaguar dealer in my country. Although no exact price was known, an approx price of $170kNZD ($116usd) was given. I find this extortionate given the Ipace is $85.9kUSD before any federal or state incentives and because our country (New Zealand) doesn't care about going green, doesn't care about giving any incentives. What I don't understand is how the price jumps from $85.9k USD (=$125k @69c exchange rate) to $170k NZD ($116k USD ) which equates to 74% increase. And to rub insult, the NZ Jaguar dealer said they were going to import some Ipace to trial to see if they would work on our roads. Excuse me, but a tarsealed, concrete, ash felt, bitumen road is surely not much different than any other country so I presume the toffee nosed nobs at Jaquar NZ want to take more than their slice of cake, prefer to sell only to stupid people that have more money than brains or just ignorant. A shame, I was eager but now I see Ipace as a front for a corrupt car dealership in our country, so will never own.

Great review - nice and comprehensive! One point though - I've yet to hear any reviewer mention how the I-Pace stacks up against the existing Jaguar ICE offerings or comparable ones from other manufacturers? Why is everyone assuming that this BEV and others will only take sales away from Tesla? Existing premium-model ICE sales will suffer with the availability of this vehicles and others like it. Look at the carnage w/ the 3-series, C-class, and A4/S4 sales due to the advent of Tesla models. Their ICE CUV/SUVs will be next as I can only imagine what will happen once this and other premium BEVs are more readily available.
@DrivenCarReviews
6 жыл бұрын
I'll argue the "carnage" is because buyers have switched to crossovers, not that Tesla is stealing sales (though yes, there is some conquest). Good point on comparing it to ICE cars and that's something I was going to touch on but ran out of video (used every frame I shot). I'm tired of the phrase "Tesla killer". I believe there will be a market for everyone as EVs get better and more options are available. Will Tesla be affected? Sure but I'm not sure it will lead to the complete demise of the company. Stay tuned...

Kenneth, insightful observation and a good clue as to WHY any traditional car maker is at odds with EVs! EVs have no post-sales income; you have to make your money up front. Unless traditional car makers do a complete turn-around of their business model (an abandon the dealership model), I don't believe they can make EVs.

Hey EV Owner - thanks! Agree that legacy automakers haven't proven as yet that they can or are willing to manufacture/sell premium EVs in sufficient numbers (believe that Jaguar is only forecasting ~26K/yr?). They'll cannibalize their existing ICE sales (electrification of the drivetrain is just more efficient, cost-effective, and results in a better vehicle) and maybe alienate their dealership base (reduced service revenue, installation of chargers at dealerships, etc.). I can only see a challenging transition for them. Imagine being in senior leadership at those companies and having to come up with a 5-year strategic plan that ensures profitability while positioning themselves for the future.

Kenneth Charles - I have likened traditional car makers to Kodak many times. All their entrenched management could see was the poor quality of digital cameras AT THAT TIME. They compared the disadvantages of digital cameras in their infancy to the mature film market that could get no better than it was - the beginning of one technology to the end of another. If you've ever wondered why Tesla gets valued higher than GM or Ford on occasion, that's why. I absolutely believe that traditional car makers CANNOT make EVs - it's going to take Tesla and Lucid and Bollinger to do it as they have started from EVs with no ancient business model to preserve.

Driven Car Reviews: infrastructure is king. Charging rules. See how many ideas Jaguar took from Tesla? Dual motors between the wheels? Sub-floor battery pack (not a T-cell like the Bolt)? In the end the I-Pace is very similar to the Model S; it's Tesla's charging network that makes Teslas and only Teslas a replacement for gas cars.

The centre console fits a 1Dx which is important :D But in reality this is not a competitor for the X. More like for the model 3 as it is really small. The X and the S both fit a 6'6 driver but the I-Pace is pretty small.

Tom, good job as always. Did you feel the heat through that panoramic roof? Thinking of its practicality in the hot climate where I live (Trinidad & Tobago).

In dynamic mode, acceleration sounds like a raygun capacitor charging

I feel its worth mentioning an impediment could be going on long trips, especially since Tesla is a point of comparison and has the supercharger network. Otherwise seems like a great car

Good points. I think EVs are just not yet cut out for serious long distance duty. In the northeast, Tesla charging stations are often full, so even if they are relatively numerous, you might be there a couple of hours waiting to charge. It's just not the car to take on a long trip unless one is very very patient. Also, syncing recharge stops to bathroom breaks is a non-trivial exercise, meaning one is often stopping twice, once to relieve and a second time to recharge, which itself is 30-40 minutes assuming no wait. 400 miles (6-7 hours driving) per day is about my limit meaning at least one stop to recharge extending that 7 hours to 8 hours. Not the worst thing in the world, but not the same experience as ICE cars. It comes down to what one prioritizes in life. If you're doing 400 miles trips every week or so, this is not the kind of car for you. If it's once or twice per year, then the tradeoff may weigh in favor of EV.

i-Pace has CCS fast charger connector that is the industry standard. Unlike the proprietary Tesla you can charge everywhere. There is no need for Jaguar only charging network. ABB has rolled out 350 kWh chargers. Tesla are.120 kWh. Jag has 150 kWh max charging power

There are plenty of commercial chargers that could be used and often times they sit alone while there are lines for Superchargers. I'll also argue that most people that can afford this car own other cars they can take on especially long road trips.

I'll point out that the exterior footage was shot by Jaguar. There was no time for me to do it.

Driven Car Reviews As someone who has used both, the convenience of supercharging far exceeds using public chargers. I do agree there are lines, but that’s mostly around california and will soon be remedied with the upcoming expansion. The two main reasons superchargers I believe are far superior are 1. There’s no planning involved. I just plug the address the navigation and it automatically routes me optimizing for least time spent; and 2. They let me get anywhere in the US (and parts of Canada and Mexico) and are not geographically positioned based on their ROI potential I do agree with your point about second cars though. I guess the only caveat would be that from my - mostly anecdotal - experience, once people switch to an electric car they don’t buy an ICE car again (might be wrong on this one, purely based on the few people I know who own Teslas)

Great review! Comprehensive and thoughtful. Good looking car and nice performance spec's - just a pity about the lack of boot (trunk) space. Jag's engineers seem to have made the very same mistake here as they did with the F Type sports car (miserable boot with no space for golf clubs). Huge error considering the target audience for both cars!!! Hopefully, slower than forecast sales for the F-Type will focus Jag's management team on a solution and a larger boot will be included in the Gen II car.

As I commented in your Porsche Mission E Taycan video, you really should play the lottery! First the Mission E, then the I-Pace in Portugal. What fun it must have been, with Mr. Medeiros coaching you! Was the family jealous?

While my wife would love to see Portugal she could care less about cars. These events are very car centric, so no, not so envious.
