What we need is new and better cooling, better keyboard, and more ports. I actually thought about getting one, but then turned to a ThinkPad instead. The better keyboard, way better cooling and a huge number of ports, this is what a "pro" machine should be. Great video though. Keep up the good work!

@Graham, King of the Britons! I am fine with the thickness of the MacBook Pro. It is a "Pro" machine. if you make it to thin it can't be cooled. I, personally, want to see a 512GB SSD standard on the 15" with a least 16gb for ram. I use mine for a lot of on the go audio editing and programming with light video editing on the side. Performance is King in the way.

I think the performance boost especially makes a lot of sense for people who are moving from much older system...MacBook Pros last 5+ years without loosing much usability for most tasks. If you can wait for the next rev, more power to you. I upgraded from my 2012 MacBook Pro and I’m loving it.

I've heard an opinion recently that keyboard issues might not actually be caused by dust or debris but rather by heat. The heat changes physical properties of some of the materials used in the keyboard which causes these issues. So the new membrane and steel dome could potentially work. Let's hope.

@marklewus5468

There is evidence that the problem with the keyboard was not just grit getting in, but rather the silicone switch body hardening due to heat. Nylons have much greater resistance to heat damage than silicones. That, in addition to the film cover to prevent dust entry, may go a long way to solving this problem. There has been a lot of noise about the fact that the 2019 MacBook was included in the four-year keyboard repair program right out of the gate. I suspect that was more a marketing move to calm those concerned, rather than any indication that Apple has not fixed the problem. Of course only time will tell.

I agree with how Apple is (even though many still don't see it) taking the steps to provide more up-to-date options to pro users. PCs get spec bumps all the time and it's worth thinking only a few years ago when Apple wouldn't update its products while the competition would be providing spec updates consistently. I think this is a great, small step in the right direction.

You qouted iFixit and said that Apple revised their dome... In that iFixit video the engineer specifically said that there were no significant changes (material wise and technique of production) in the dome switch (i.e. metal part) and that the only change was that nylon part because it's more durable and may also add protection to the metal dome.

Hard to imagine a bigger display in the same chassis, but if you take away the lower and side bezels and make the camera strip thinner, then you get the 0.6" extra needed. I still think it'll be the same general design, just with a new display shell.

No regular sized (legacy) USB ports. No Sleep indicator. Keyboard that is flimsy and unpleasant to use, where you can easily hit the caps lock by mistake without realizing it, or you're not sure you're typing passwords correctly because you don't feel like you're actually pressing the keys, due to the lack of key movement. One of the USB-C ports is wasted if you want to charge the computer.

I really don't get why they don't just revert to their old keyboards? They were amazing and I have never heard anyone talk bad about them. On a $3k device, you should not have to worry about your keyboard failing - and certainly not for like 4 generations of macbooks. When the trade-off is key travel (a lot of people don't even like the shallow key travel) versus reliability, I don't understand why you would choose key travel...
@colevano

Dude, people aren’t saying that this update is bad because it is more of the same. They say it’s bad because your keyboard is highly likely to fail, your CPU does not boost more than 300 Mhz, and because it is extremely overpriced even for a pro device.

People have been wanting spec bump updates like this for years! Now they finally get it and they are upset.. it’s not meant to be a brand new redesign (though hopefully that comes soon), it’s meant to give power to the people who’s time is far more valuable than their money, aka the professionals. It’s not really meant for the everyday consumer.

Hey Jeff, your videos are an oasis of the positive side of things. I own a 2017 MacBook Pro and I am quite happy with it, I had some issues with resource starvation using VMWare Fusion but those were later resolved with the latest Mojave updates. It is good to see that for my workload I won’t be needing an upgrade anytime soon. I still have 3 2011 MacBooks that after replacing the batteries are still good for web browsing. Because Apple does not support Mojave on them I am switching to Ubuntu one by one.
