I had a 2019 crew cab version of the Rebel for two weeks while my truck was at the dealership for repairs. It's a great truck. Its surprisingly easy to hustle through traffic for its size and the transmission is great. It's definitely my favorite current year model truck. I am very tempted to trade my truck in on one.

This was a really great quick review! My thoughts from someone that was just in the market for a truck. First of all, you are absolutely right about brand loyalty in the top 3 domestic (US) product for trucks...holy crap! I have never owned a domestic product, so I had ZERO brand loyalty. I have owned mostly German luxury and sports cars (just so you have a little context to my thought process on what I was looking for). I used to have a truck about 20 years ago that got stolen, so I missed having a truck and wanted to buy one. I really wanted the Raptor just because of how it looks and the performance...love the look, but after talking to owners about it, it has what they said was an "inevitable issue" with the cam phaser which requires taking part of the engine apart to fix (I am not a technical guy, so I couldn't recite to you exactly what that is); this turned me off from the Raptor, but yes, it is a FUN truck for sure, just don't want it to sit at the dealer for weeks at a time for an "inevitable issue" on a $60K+ USED truck. I am sure some of you might be thinking this guy owned German cars and he's worried about the Raptor sitting at the dealer for weeks; well, I can tell you, after 20 years of owning German luxury cars, I've never had an issue bigger than having to change a fuel pump. So I moved on and test drove the Nissan Titan Pro4X. It was priced in the mid $50's if I remember correctly, but I didn't like it. I thought the transmission was always hunting for gears, and drove like you are sailing a boat. Also, I didn't think the interior materials justified a price tag over $50K...felt plasticky and cheap; however, it kinda looked nice...until you touched it. I went to Toyota and looked at the Tundra TRD which I like the exterior (very rugged looking), and I know it's a great overall truck with a ridiculous cult like following, but that interior is straight out of 2000! Couldn't justify that price tag and have to sit in a space that I can't love. Aesthetics are important to me just as much as drivability. I thought all hope was lost in buying a truck that checks all the marks for me (i.e. rugged good looks, great interior space, and great capability). Until I was told to go look at the Ram Rebel. I was never really into the Ram truck look...not ugly, but it's just a little too plain looking. The person that suggested Ram then said, no no no, they changed everything about it, you are thinking of the old gen! I went to look at it, well, loved it, checked all the marks, so I bought it! I know a lot of what I said is very subjective to the individual buyer, but I thought I'd share my thoughts from someone that has no brand loyalty (so no bias), and just did a lot of shopping for trucks.

@Peder Hansen Depends. They have special ZF variations. For instance they partnered with ZF to create a better 9 speed transverse, Since the original was not universally praised.
@johnq6257
5 жыл бұрын
@Peder Hansen every car manufacturer that used the ZF-9 when it came out in 2014 had problems. HONDA, ACURA, LAND ROVER, the list goes on. The ZF-9 was the most complex software driven trans ever made at the time. Also In 2014 Chrysler had manufactured 60% of the trans they made with the intricate O-ring not positioned perfectly which cause a lot of problems. They replaced all those trans for free. By 2016 many of the other car manufacturers dropped the ZF-9. Chrysler having invested so much into ZF-9 or ZF in general, stood by ZF during those difficult times. Currently FCA is the only car manufacturer that figured out how to optimize the 9 speed by spending massive R&D and money. In Feb of 2017 they released a new firmware which dramatically changed the overall behaviour of the trans and to this day is what they use. ZF and FCA have a very close and tight relationship. FCA has shared there algorithms with ZF so both can further enhance there knowledge for the next ZF iteration. Currently FCA and ZF filed a Patent for a new and improved ZF-9 trans. This will be exclusive to Chrysler.

Regardless of brand, going too fancy seems to be the path to having problems. Get a mid-level trim without all the bells and whistles and you'll be fine.
@Scotty_in_Ohio
5 жыл бұрын
even mid trim cars or trucks seem to have a lot of those bells/whistles - a lot of "safety tech" is coming 'standard" - it's been for the last decade that if you want to wrench on your car/truck you're going to need to have a ODB II scanner and have some basic knowledge of how these systems work. I agree though the more stuff the higher a chance for any of it to break after a while - if it keeps the car/truck from running then that's one thing but if the heated seats don't work that's another....

I'm not necessarily a "Ram guy", was always more of a GM truck guy, but I gotta say this is my pick of the 1/2 ton segment. Interior looks terrific and functional, the exterior looks great, and the Rebel pkg itself looks to be pretty good as well, if you're looking for a truck to offroad in. Also points for being the only one in the segment with a coil sprung rear end, I'm sure that's where the great ride comes from, at least in part anyway. Of course long term reliability may be a crap shoot, but if you live in the rust belt I think trucks tend to rot out before they fail mechanically, Which IMO is the main advantage of the Ford aluminum body. I doubt the weight savings makes that much difference, and I don't think truck buyers are wowed by a "more advanced body structure". However, when these are ten+ years old and still have their bedsides and rocker panels intact, that aluminum body will really be appreciated. Anyway, great review! I enjoy truck reviews by non-"truck guys". It's always a more interesting point of view.

@donaldgreen9292
5 жыл бұрын
My first Dodge truck was an 80 D150 with a slant 6, owned it 3 years and it would start no matter what and for around 300 dollars and about another 300 to make it road ready. My second was a 85 W150 with a 318, it took some work to turn her around from previous owner. paid 1800 for it, going from Indianapolis to near Tennessee state line, she blew a oil pan gasket and survived running on two quarts and drove it for a couple years after that. Had a 2007 Ram 1500 5.7L hemi, another great truck, just brakes and oil changes, ended up trading her for a 2010 camaro ss(when I should have kept the truck). I currently have a 2017 1500 with the hemi, for a 4wd truck, absolutely the best handling I drove, almost hugs corners like an old mid 90s impala ss. I won't buy a Ford, but my biggest issue with GM trucks is they keep pushing and using the 5.3, according to EPA estimates only does one mpg better than the hemi. 3 factors plays a part in my decision when it comes to vehicles, number 1 is dependability, 2 is ease of maintenance, and 3 is performance.
@james2042
5 жыл бұрын
Realistically the 5.3 and the HEMI get the same fuel economy, the issue with the new GM trucks is because the front got so much bulkier that MPG dropped from 2018 to 2019 because now the engines are moving a bigger brick through the air. The real world for them though is about the same, except you get more power from the HEMI. I know a lot of people don't care about MPG when it comes to trucks, but a 6% increase in distance per tank will add up over however many miles you drive.

The Ram is the best driving half-ton. Hands down. The base setup/rear coil suspension trumps anything Ford or GM have done thus far. The most disappointing thing about trucks is how hard it is to find new standard cab or extended cabs without extra doors. The truck is becoming the family vehicle + a small bed for hauling one La-Z-Boy. What happened to trucks where you could put several plywood sheets in the back and shut the gate? Kudos farm trucks.

I drove a Ram 2017 for 4 months last winter and was very impress with it. It was a outdoorsman edition full cab and the space and winter performance was very good. We had one of the coldest winter last year when i had the truck and it was sitting at -30c for a couple of days and never had an issue starting. frosting on the rear glass was my only issue. I like the knob for the transmission it free up a lot of space around the steering wheel and center console. Gas milage was the killer 135$ to fill up...often. The truck felt well build and nothing was broken or loose. Since it was a rentall unit that don't get a lot of love i would feel confident in the reliability if i would be the owner. Buy running boards this truck is high of the ground.

Love the new ending. " I'mma show you how to to get back at him, at Yelp and all that other stuff". Lol I know a guy who owns a Greek restaurant in a snooty area. He is real worried about his Yelp rating. He has a high rating. He was just stressing last week because an African American woman gave him 1 star, because " she didn't see no black people working there, so he must be racist". Lmao. He was trying to call yelp to get it removed but failed last I heard.

I'm not a Ram, Ford or Chevy fanboy, so I'll say this. I can see why this his broad appeal. It's nicely done, and there's attention to detail that FCA only does here and on the Pacifica. I know a lot of families that use these as, well, family cars, so I don't understand why they didn't extend the wheelbase and make the rear seat bigger. Other than that, there's not a lot to fault here.

I'm NOT truck guy but i love interior of Ram. I am now interested in this truck, ecodiesel only. I can't stand interior of all trucks. They all look like design from 1990 including Tacoma. MODERN INTERIOR DESIGNS SHOULD BE EMBRACED not frowned upon. It will attract more sales IMO. Never had one truck in my life. Take it for what it's worth.

I can say this, I have owned Chev, GM, Ram and most recently had a 2016 f-150 Lariat 2.7L Turbo and it was just ok. The engine is great! Power was plenty and it sips fuel for a full-size 4x4...no guilt taking it on long trips! But that's about all that's great. The rest is just ok. I've had problems with the 4x4, the front axels seem to bind (yes in soft offroad conditions not on pavement) It had a transmission issue where it wouldn't shift, then went away, It has the worst rear bumper and only a man (or woman) with tiny feet can step up on it! Mine had one wheel open diff, so if you take a corner in wet rain or snow you get one inside tire spinning and all the nannies go off on you! After 100,000 KM I have needed two sets of brakes and my exterior lights have a mind of their own! The interior is maybe #2 in the business, Ram is #1 by a mile! Chev and GM just redid theirs and I'd tell them to go back and try harder! When looking for my next truck I was looking for something more offroad biased, a Raptor was out of the question and ford's FX4 is a joke, so it was between the Ram Rebel or the Chev Trail Boss....in the end, I went Ram! For me, there were three major deciding factors for this. One Amazing interior, well thought out, unique and overall feels like a nice space to sit behind the wheel! The number two reason was this thing is quiet...or "over-refined" as savagegeese puts it! the refinement is awesome! You hear the grunt from the Hemi, but little to no road noise! When you drive the Trail Boss, I feel like there is something broken in the drivetrain...the wheel noise is awful on pavement and at the end of the day who wants to listen to that wheel drone none stop??? And finally the price! Somehow some way I got a very loaded Rebel for less money than my 2016 f-150 when it was new and much less than the Chevy even at their 0% to Rams 4.29%.....we won't argue much about the price because there are so many variables at play, different dealers with different finance programs, the industry is full of games...but at the end of the day I think I got the best truck for the money anyone could ask for!

I recently bought a 2020 Rebel. I absolutely hate Android/Apple auto, you dont need them in this truck. The truck has a stand alone navigation that uses XM for navigation and has traffic overlays on the map. My phone syncs via Bluetooth and works great. I bought the truck with the split tailgate, spray in bedliner, crew cab, Ram Box, and giant screen for roughly 51k, that was 2 weeks ago. So far this truck is awesome, you will most likely not come close to the advertised MPG for city, I am averaging 14.5 mpg so far, and thats without putting my foot in it. The transmission is extremely smooth shifting, the truck is real quiet, but the low rumble of the exhaust is noticeable. This is a very comfortable vehicle that is my daily driver. I have about 550 miles so far, I love the truck so far. Something to note. FCA does now offer a lifetime unlimited warranty, but that covers only eligible parts. However, they do also sell an upgraded package as well that will cover all the electrical parts and labor for roughly $3500 more, which I did buy because of all the electrical parts on the truck. My dealership had a complete maintenance plan for $1850 that covers all required maintenance for the first 6 years and 72000 miles, which is a steal.

We have a 2019 RAM Laramie crew cab and we love it. We have the 8 inch screen and I think its better that way. I have seen people have issues with the 12 inch one. The only thing wrong with it was it stalled on the test drive. The salesman wasn’t with us so he took it out and claimed it didn’t happen again so we bought it and haven’t had a problem since. 😂

Wait until all those electronics, transmission and the motor fail and Dodge does its usual to refuse warranty service. They refused warranty service on the now widely known defective transmission on a 2001 Ram with the 5.2L, their own customer service rep told me to get a lawyer LOL. Never again, but the problems with the other brands are pretty awful too these days. I'm not sure there is a solid truck choice...even Toyota has the crazy frame rust issues now.

I have the 2019, and yes the Interior looks great but at 50000km the driver seat has cracks and stiching coming apart. I tried taking it back to the dealership and they won't even warranty it. very disappointing 😞
