Never had an issue with the centre console. I do believe though that far too many people with the 2017-2019 Highlander have had unnecessary trips to the dealership for a “ non operating rear hatch “ because the rear glass was not closed properly. The rear glass sometimes looks like it’s fully closed but it isn’t and that means the rear hatch won’t open. The salesperson should mention that when pointing out the amazing open the glass only option. You don’t need to slam the glass shut but check that it is closed by pulling the “ hook “ on the glass. If it opens without you pressing the small black rubber button to the right and down a bit ofrom the” hook” then recluse it and the hatch will open. There’s also a small button on the left side of the frame that the glove box fits into. If this button gets pushed while changing the cabinet air filter or just removing the glovebox the rear hatch won’t open. I can imagine several people have been told 5hat the struts on their rear hatch needed to be replaced ( $1000 +) when all the shop did was press that button or close the rear glass.
