Thanks for these Joe! Loving my new M340 (also Alpine White) for the last two weeks like nothing I have ever owned. It’s crazy fast but also great with AWD and my new winter wheel and tire package just in time for a typical Canadian snow storm. And despite gobs of power on my morning commute I got a best of 5.1 liters per 100 kms (that’s over 52 mpg for you over there)! That’s WAY beyond my expectations. I’ve always wanted an M3 but this is the perfect beauty/beast for my needs. Thanks for helping me with my decision and glad to see you again confirming I made the right choice. And despite being the only slightly used one available in the entire province of Ontario my dealership were still willing to give me a great deal on it. Cheers!

Just for the record and your info Joe. My M340i Xdrive Touring (285kw here in NZ by the way) just returned - after a 250km drive twisty roads, hills, some blats and some 80 kph some 120kph - 7.1 l/100km. That's 40 mpg in english money. That is phenomenal. This is the best car I have ever had - includes BMW 3.0Si, Mercedes 300d (enough said) Audi B6 chipped, Audi RS4, Audi B8.5 (chipped and milltek exhaust) and Audi A6 biturbo diesel. This car just takes a vertical leap in every respect. As far as motors go - BMW rocks. The only car that will replace this one day is an Alpina B3 Touring - but too hard to get here so a dream!

Thanks for this Awesome review Joe, it was the tipping point in changing my mind on my new car. Long story short - I had an M4 CP delivered a few weeks ago, but I had to return it due to a cock up - it arrived with stock stereo, even though I ordered a Harmon Kardon! They couldn’t find one with the same spec anywhere, so rather than wait for another few months I put it on hold for a re think. I watched this video, took a test drive and ordered one the same day, Stratstone found one with the right spec, and the car was delivered in a couple of weeks. I've now got an M340i in Tanzanite blue with black wheels on my drive, it's a gorgeous looking car. I am so happy with it, it’s far more practical than the M4, far more comfortable, 5 seats and the traction from xDrive is incredible! Best of all it is remarkably quick - as you said the 0-62 seems much faster than 4.4, it feels at least as quick to 60 as an M4 CP to me (M4 does beat it from 60 up though). The prof media pack and connected drive are massive improvements over the last versions too. It also feels so assured on the road and the steering is perfectly weighted. The adaptive suspension is far better than the F30 M Sport adaptive suspension- there is none of the harshness and bumpiness that came with with that in sport modes, and this really adds to the overall feel of stability and control you get as the driver. The only real negative for me is the iDrive controls as you noted. The screen and new infotainment layout are brilliant, but the controls are not great. It may be just because I am so used to the iDrive in my last car (F30 335 M Sport), but the new controls do feel cheaper, and it’s on the far side of the centre console which doesn’t help, especially as some buttons are hidden from view sometimes by the centre control wheel. They’ve also moved the volume down control on the steering wheel, but left the up button where it was! Just why? We’ll have to agree to disagree on the thick steering wheels though, as I love ‘em. This one is particularly nice and chunky! The only other tiny negative is that the exhaust sound in sport+ is so awesome, and the throttle response so brutal that I’m driving everywhere in sport+. My consumption is therefore pretty crap - I’m averaging 18 mpg at the moment, but sport+ is too much fun to turn it off! It just wants to go! Thanks again!

I have one and love it. I changed the run flat tyres to Michelin Sport Pilots which made it so much better. The best thing is it’s ability as a discrete daily driver, yet it’ll really perform when asked. Hey James can I ask a few questions please as I see you have had both 340i and m340. IV had the pleasure of driving my friends 18 plate Audi S3 it's the 310 version and loved every minute. But it's extremely small for what I need. And so puts RS3 outbid the equation. RS4 is too expensive and so many people on videos such as this say how good the old m135/40 was. Looking into the 340i was it an X drive or RWD and is the performance of the m340i improved over that. The build quality speaks for itself on this model again an improvement over the 340i I'm assuming. But just wondered what your views were. Spanner in the works 335d touring pre 2019 model??? Cheers mate.

chris cringle hey Chris, for a little bit of history started with a M235i, then M140i and then the 340i RWD. I have to say the M235i handled the best of them all despite a less powerful engine. BUT the new M340i is the best of the bunch. The 340i was a little unsettled when you put your foot down, but the M340i (maybe with it being longer, wider and with an LSD) feels so composed on all types of corners, and with xdrive you can easily accelerate out of the tightest corners. The interior is also a step up in class and the tech is impressive. I have found all my previous BMW’s to be fun but with their faults but the M340i covers all my needs with ease. If you want any other info let me know.

@@jameshegarty1097 hey James thanks for quick reply mate. Wow you have had some powerful cars. It's a shame as love the hot hatches but just too small for my family. And the bmws seem so much more classy than the Audis. I can defo see how much of an improvement the new model is even a new 320i looks so good with the black details on it. Just didn't wanna really go down the diesel route even though I know they are up there with the power and performance just the petrol has the sound factor as well! Lol

chris cringle yeah the in-line 6 does sound good. The main reason for changing my cars was for the family space and the M340i is roomier than the 340i. And the engine definitely feels a lot more powerful despite being more efficient. I have seen some people say wait for the M3 but if you want a car to be comfortable at times and sporty at times for about 50k you can’t go wrong. Take it for a test drive and let me know what you think 😀

Sorry to butt in on your conversation, but I can throw in my 2 cents as I also went from an F30 340i MSport to a G20 M340i (both RWD as I live in Texas). The new car is significantly stronger in stock form (I know it's essentially the same engine) and the handling is more nimble. The interior and tech are much nicer. The digital cockpit has grown on me.

Hi Joe, the is no doubt in my mind this car is just fabulous and you say £52,000 and £2000 down that equals £550 per month but when you look at how much car and tech your getting it’s simply worth every penny. You would struggle to find better for that money plus the build quality is just the best a bloody good solid, reliable good looking great performing car around at that price point still don’t like the front end grill but I can forgive it for that when you look at the much bigger picture and as you say it’s a big car and that’s bloody obvious. I have an M340 which I bought from Snows in Southampton with 27 miles on the clock last September and apart from an electrical issue selecting Sport, Comfort etc. which was fixed immediately by BMW who replaced the centre console in a few hours, its been seamless after 5,000 miles with excellent reliability and performance. It came with Pirelli P Zero's which have been very good, but I suspect a little noisier than the Michelin Pilot Sport 4s's I had on my tuned 328i and the tyres I’ll put on this one as soon as they start to wear. My real love is also the rear bias handling. I have tried it on the limit and it enters corners with a very positive feel of impending oversteer which can be corrected with a hint of opposite lock and then if you really overdo it, the computer literally sorts it out and focusses the power out of the corner keeping everything aligned. In that sense it is simply stunning. I too would prefer a thinner steering wheel and my interior is quite dark. With a dark grey exterior, rear tinted windows and a black leather interior, only the small bits of bright trim and lighting give it a break in colour. I also have the black alloys which don’t look as good on the grey paint, but do turn the car into a real sleeper which doesn’t attract the immediate attention of Police or challenged boy racers in their hot hatches. The more I drive it fast, the more I like it’s innocuous and non threatening exterior looks. Overall, I can honestly say this is a real keeper for me. In the new age of impending electric cars and the mass of diesels, this has to be one of the last opportunities to buy a multi cylinder, petrol engined car and that can be a family daily driver, or a focussed drivers car. Although I may bow to a Tesla one day, this will remain in my garage as the pinnacle of family car, sports engineering, a real wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Hi Joe, thanks for your review. Being an F10 M5 owner, my 30 minutes experience on rear wheel drive m340i was enough to make me want to add this car. This supplements my F10 M5 in a few respects. This is a better daily driver & commuter, especially in a traffic heavy city where I live and work, being built on an automatic transmission versus DCT. The chasis setting with comfort mode is really smooth and comfortable, whereas the car becomes noticeably stiffer with sport mode, which I like on a highway. This lacks the crazy power of F10 M5 I can harness on highways, though, but still very fun to drive. I would opt to drive this vehicle on Monday till Friday to work and switch to F10 M5 on my way to golf course on weekends or on a family short trip to suburban areas.

I test drove one just two weeks ago, along with a few other cars over the course of two months (S4, S5, C43, C63, 540i etc), but ultimately walked away with an ex-dealer Mercedes C43. In the end, I agree with the Throttle House comparison conclusion. There's a lot I prefer about the 340i to the C43, for example the exterior looks, the UI and infotainment system, the build quality, some of the technology, the seating position, the actual seats and more, but ultimately the C43 is just a more theatrical, engaging and fun car. Its interior, whilst not as high in build quality, still looks more swanky and slick, plus there's little things that I prefer, like the feel of the AMG steering wheel, the laser cut Burmester speakers grills, the seat adjustments being on the side of the door etc. But most of all, the thing that makes the C43 more enjoyable is the engine note, which absolutely blows the M340i's away, especially if you have the AMG performance exhaust. The sheer audacious, theatrical nature of it is simply addictive. The tone, the constant loud pops, crackles and bangs. It makes the 340i's engine sound a bit pedestrian in comparison. It also makes the C43 feel much quicker than the 340i, even if it isn't. And this is where I feel the whole Jekyll and Hyde summary is far more apt to the C43, not the 340i, since the difference between Comfort and Sport+ is far greater in the C43 than it is in the 340i. The C43 becomes an absolute annoy your neighbours hooligan in Sport+ (plus traction off if you want sharper dynamics), where the 340i unfortunately never gets loud or obnoxious enough, even at its lairiest. And if you're spending £50k+ on a small sedan, you want it to be a best of both worlds, subtle when you want, but also lairy and obnoxious when it needs to be type car, else you'd get a bigger saloon or a smaller engine model instead. And before you say it, the M3, C63 etc are too performance orientated, simply not as daily driver friendly, nor as affordable to buy or economical to run, plus 4WD is a God send for British roads and weather, and presently neither the M3 or C63 offer a 4WD option.
@JoeAchilles1

Interesting! I like the C43 too, it certainly has its plus points, but dynamically falls short in terms of actual ability against the M340i, also it's Korean standard plastics would start to really annoy me during ownership.
@nib95
4 жыл бұрын
@@JoeAchilles1 I didn't find that at all personally. Whilst the M340i has heavier and weightier steering, in my opinion it isn't quite as direct in turn in, nor does it offer as much feedback as the C43. I found the car altogether a tad bit softer and less stiff than the C43, with a bit more body roll and weight around and in corners. The C43 feels like it's a lighter, more nimble car, even if they're probably very similar in weight. On top of that, I felt the C43 had crisper, more explosive shifts. All in all I just felt the C43 had more bite and a more aggressive overall feel. Perhaps you might be able to spin the rear up easier in the M340i, but actual handling dynamics weren't quite as confidence inspiring or aggressive for me as the C43. Don't get me wrong, they're both very close, but I drove them within a couple of days of each other, so I feel I was able to compare and contrast pretty well. You may remember I asked some advice on these cars a few weeks back, and you were kind enough to respond. Well in the end I just test drive them all lol. One final note, I actually feel there's more difference in dynamics between the C300/C400 and the C43, than there is between the 330i vs the M340i. Would be nice if you could compare them back to back to offer a more detailed comparison.

Swapping my 335d Touring for the M340i Touring. Delivery in 2-3 weeks. 335d has been an amazing tool but this new model moves things up on all levels! Looks better, goes better, sounds better and has more tech. Price wise there is little in it with the deals available at the moment, which I hear are only there for a limited time. It would be rude not to..............!!

Love thick steering wheels! Have a golf r which is really thin and on longs journeys it’s so uncomfortable. I do a lot of miles so the trade off is so worth it. Totally agree tho with piano black trim. That and touchscreen only infotainment systems are a no-no!

Great video Joe, as always. This is the most likely contender for a replacement of my M240i in the coming 12months. I’m sure I know the answer to this already, but... At £50k, would you buy this for the money and boxes it ticks or another, used or new?? 5:46 😂

Really enjoyed driving the previous version of the M340i. Very capable sports saloon. 40k tops thou BMW! Can’t believe I’m saying this but BMW probably won’t be our next new car due to the poor showing of the M135i We aren’t interested in big cars as I’m in the market for a lightweight sports car and a decent Hot hatch is essential. Fabulous review as usual Joe #MrBoggy 😂👍

I like my thick steering wheel! As for run-flats, the safety aspect trumps any handling benefit of MP4S or similar - would you want your missus having a blow out on the motorway on regular tyres, at best stranded on the side of the motorway (at worst not worth thinking about), instead of ambling home slowly on run flats. Other than that, great video Joe, we're considering one at the moment

I know there’s a new version now and I’ve watched your video on that too but seeing the repeated accolades from car reviewers through both generations of the m340i only solidify my comfort in my order of one of the new LCI’s. I’m ending my lease in a couple months for a Tesla Model 3 performance and while the Tesla will kill the m340i in a straight line, there is zero emotion to driving it and I immediately missed that passion and soul of the car’s engine/exhaust,gears, etc once I got the Tesla. IMO the Tesla has its own unique benefits over the BMW but not enough for me to want to get into another Tesla any time soon (and yes I’ve drive a Plaid and it’s just more of the same)

I love your videos. I also love the new 3 series and this 340i is a beast. I havent driven the new 3 series yet but I will hopefully very soon. I do drive alot in work and private so unfortunately the 340i is not ideal for me. I did have a -13 320d 3-5 years ago and I really miss that car so theres a chance I go back to bmw :D btw I fully agree with you about the infotainment, its for sure the best. Have a good one.

Great video Joe. I'm currently in a 430d x-drive GC and when I change next year, it's currently between a M340i Touring or a X3M40d. Will drive both to see where my heart sits. Nothing outside of BMW currently floats my boat. Used to be an Audi man, but not any more.

@@JoeAchilles1 The new m135i gearbox vs ZF is savage in sport on the up-shift, at first I wasn't sure if I liked it but found myself smiling everytime and it grows on you. Will look forward to it! I also achieved 38mpg on my work run twice whereas my old 240i managed high 20's and late 30's if nursed. Seems a lot better on fuel too. Cheers, Will

Hi Joe, great review! Currently an F31 330d driver and still love it :) Not quite the same in a few aspects but Superb Estate with the 4x4 2L petrol (maybe 280 hp) in the L&K spec is quite an attractive car for all-round abilities. I’m still a BMW fan boy at heart though, so when my F31 needs replacing will be looking at one of these or a 5 series estate I reckon. Cheers!

Hi Joe, really enjoyed this video together with all your others. I have a question about the 4 wheel drive operating system on this 340i. How long has BMW used this particular drive system? Is it totally reliable under normal driving conditions? I ask these questions, as in Australia this car on its stock configuration costs $120k and I don’t want to be up for crazy expensive service costs due to the 4 wheel drive system, as opposed to rear wheel drive.....one dislike, is the ugly grill on this model. I far prefer the traditional vertical black slat grill style, as on my M240i and MSport 320i shadow line.

Wonderful review I have to say. I am assuming that the G20 is essentially a gen 7 3 series...right? So this 340i is in fact a G20? Fell in love with the G20, only to discover that, as far as I can tell, is simply a 2019 3 series...if I'm correct? Anyways, thanks again for the video. Seriously thinking of getting either a new 330i or a 340i.

When's your finance up? I'm in the same boat now and took both for a test drive yesterday. M2C first then the M340i. I spent far too long in the M2 (nearly 2 hours) and only about 25 mins in the M340i. M2C obviously the better drive, but there's so much value for money in the M340i (laser lights, HUD, LSD, adaptive suspension (have this in my M240i) leather dash, marino leather, ID7, etc) that you get compared to having a most options on the M2C. Only thing is, I had a far better, fun and more dynamic drive home in my M240i compared to the M340i I was just in, so is it a change for something more practical, or do what Joe did and go for a Hockenheim Silver M2C??? First world decisions...
