Great review. I like the bike and considered purchasing one this year. I’m holding out for an updated model (hopefully 2021) that includes a TFT display and eliminates the 1980s radio antenna.

Thanks for sharing the test ride. Its a new bike so everything is still tight and using the quick shifter while the engine is still cold probably not a good idea. I have the 2017 R1200RT and find my quick shifter improved over time. I ran the bike in properly and always let it warm up before increasing to higher rpm and using the quickshift. Generally quickshifting from 1st to 2nd is not recommended unless you are accelerating hard and the change occurs at over 6000 rpm. All the other shifts work smoothly at above 3500 rpm when warmed up. Love the rev matching while down shifting Not sure why you think the RT is more top heavy than a GS. Your fuel guage showed a full tank which is 25L on the RT...so I guess that maybe the reason. I have ridden the RT, GS & GSA and at higher cornering speeds the RT is definitely more planted and stable. The GS & GSA front tyre feel is too light at the limit for my liking. The RT has essentially remained the same since its introduction in 2014 so i too agree that an update is coming and look forward to seeing that. You simply dont see an RT in an incident on KZitem....great handling and excellent brakes with surprisingly good performance for a touring bike. Its hard to beat....

@@CaliMotoTV that's not scooter; If you test it in city it's like testing schoolbus on highways. Nothing good can come out of that :) That's agile sport touring bike and sportyness is for alpine twisties, but city test? How about testing a ferrary in city. hard, stupid, low, no room, loud, bad radio, stupid seat belts, stupid red colour :) wide tyres. Yes, worst car ever.

Sweet bike. A TFT would be a fantastic addition. As would backlit handlebar controls for night riding. It’s TFT screens are bigger, brighter and way easier to see, especially on long rides where you don’t need to be focusing in on small font display. Analogue gauges are classic looking but better suited for say the K1600b and Grand America models which try to maintain a style towards a particular market, the American Bagger market.

Always appreciate your reviews. I am looking forward to the update on the RT with the TFT and hopefully LED headlights and removal of that ghastly antennae from the front. It checks almost every box otherwise. PS. You need to use your turn signal more when you ride.

The RT has more weight up top than the Grand America? No. The RT and all of the BMW boxers have the lowest CGs in the industry for their respective classes. I ride a GTL, by the way.

I have a 2009 RT and I like the new one except for the price. OTD it's about 7K more than I paid for mine. It's nice having no payment and BMW hasn't really enticed me to upgrade.

I just ordered this beauty, owned R1200Rt LC before and also GT a couple of years, and previous RT, ...and some other japaneese bikes as well (few yamahas, kawasaki and two hondas). Windshield lifts up in its last position as you start moving. Until then, it stays lowered. As for valve adjustment: I did it myself, it costs nothing. Anyway, it is more then half cheaper than K1600. And there's really no adjusting mostly, just check; normally nothing is out of tolerance. Quick shift needs pull, if you accelerate, than it works. It's more for sporty riding really. But RT looks like old mens bike, so wrong "cliantela"; If you sleep while doing it, nope. It's like sex. More effort, more pleasure. As for top heavy - try K1600GT one more time at low speeds in twisties, or even better, Kawa concours, Honda CB1300, all are much more top heavy. Boxer has the lowest center of gravity by far. GS can not be less top heavy, it's not possible. The only difference is where your ass seats :)

The liquid cooled boxers can have cams out of time. If you look on some of the forums, owners have found that they can be out from the showroom. There is a procedure to adjust it and if you have the maintenance done, they should check and adjust as necessary. The K bike is very expensive to have the valves checked and worse adjusted. The boxer is easier to work on.

I’m 5’10 and with regular suspension (non low suspension option ) you merely set the seat to it’s lowest position and it’s perfect. Have you tried that? The GSA is the do it all bike anyway you look at it. This RT is another awesome long haul bike. Both with great history.

This is no TFT in the context of today’s screen technology. Example, look at the GS/GSA for instance. Now that’s a TFT screen.

I own a R1250RS, and shifting from 1-2 and 2-3 is also quite clunky. In my experience there is a lot of difference between BMW boxer bikes, one shifts like butter using the quickshifter, as the other one is quite clunky. You have to be lucky I guess......

@@CaliMotoTV an uniformed or in that case as you own something and missuse it - a bad rider is what causing that. Quickshift needs fast acceleration, or a steep hill, so force. It's not ment for cruising and shifting. it can not do that. It does not use clutch, so it can not be smooth if you don't put some revs on and downshitfts as well, need deceleration, not cruising speed. So high revs. Noone shifts at 2K revs on RR, that's why it is smoother there and also lover torque.

you were screwed obviously :) :) :) you should sell it because of alternator stator problem costs and ESA or ABS replacement costs. That's the real reason :) Not valve check. BMW does not keep up with technology, still a bulbs for lights instead of LED. They 3-4 years behind the Honda Gold-wing. Nothing should be analog gauges at this point. Not saying BMW RT isn't a good bike. I have 2016 R1200RT 171k miles, it's pretty much the same as 2020 except for CC's. Nothing new from BMW! As much as they cost they should be current with technology!
