I go with the third option, a 1290 SAS...which combines both. I see the XR as an upright sports bike and the GS as a comfortable touring bike that goes off road. They’re both great, but I would not REPLACE a GS with an XR. If I had to pick one, it would be the GS.

I had an 18 XR for two years and now a 19 GS. GS is overall a better bike. But oh boy the XR has muscles... lots and lots of muscles. Arms thick as thighs of a normal-bike kind of muscles. Capable of choking the life out of you without even trying kind of... you get the point. Damn I miss the XR... I want to see what the M1000XR will be like if it's built. Take my money BMW!

Thanks for a superb review. It would appear that this bike gives you real comfort AND performance without compromising on either. I’m not a great fan of 4 cylinder bikes as I love torquey twins but this has certainly caught my eye as I want all day comfort and performance too and as good as everyone thinks the GS is I just couldn’t live with its looks and I already have an R1200 RS. Time to change...🤔maybe?

I can’t believe car drivers flash indicators to inform you when it’s safe to pass (also the fact they even know you’re there). In Sydney if you see an indicator, it’s been left on by mistake, bumped while reaching for a phone or the driver intends turning but isn’t quite sure if it’s to go left or right!! YES, THEY ARE AWFUL!!

I really like this bike. I am in market for getting my touring needs sorted. I am very much confused as I would wanna keep the vehicle for 10 years at least so it has to be reliable. I have a thing for inline 4s but I am not sure if that would be a good idea to do long distances. Should I get something like Versys 1000 and save money or should I stretch and buy this or the GS1250? With this bike I am being greedy as a 120 hp bike would suffice my touring needs and we have no autobahns here. That being said, on my current bike(KTM-RC390) I can ride for 600 kms a day which is ideally a track bike, which makes me think that GS would be overkill for me and I should settle for a sports tourer like this one.

being a fan (and owner) of the previous model... it's disapointing to see the new model being more tammed and further away from the wild/sporty side of it. - for ex. not including the shift-cam... on the other side, the only real improvements is the pannier system and (front) LED illumination. Nice video BTW. Cheers

Dude ... you had me cracking up several times ... your injection of humor, whether purposeful or not, is very well timed! Great review and I enjoyed it very much ... liked and subscribed! And fyi ... two bikes in the garage ... 2004 Honda RC51 and 2016 BMW S1000XR ... going to admit, the XR has spoiled me ... and going back to the RC, when I show her some love, scares the hell out of me ... no computer, no ABS, no traction control, no slipper/ quick-shift, no assisted suspension ... you actually have to "ride a motorcycle" ... barbaric 😜😂😂😂 ... but so raw and, in short bursts, so fun!! The XR though ... comfort and every bit as sharp as any sport bike on the road ... the absolute BEST of both worlds! Cheers!!

I'm so close to choosing one of these bikes. Rode it a month ago and still can't stop thinking about it. Coming from a Triumph Tiger 800, which has punched above its weight for 7 seven years. Currently torn between the S1000XR, the new Tiger 900 and a couple of retros like the Speed Twin and R Nine T. Wish I could afford all of them. Will test ride again in a couple of weeks and make a decision. Thanks for a terrific review!

Be honest, few bikes marketed as "adventure bikes" are for adventure riding. For adventure riding use the machines that invented adventure riding, a dual sport bike. I like the XR but it struggled in a gravel road. Riding with my group with one of these "adventure bikes" off road would be both a disaster and a photo opportunity. The perspective depends on which bike you are on. Imagine it loaded with a few days of fuel, food, and camping gear. Nice road bike.
