My hemi of 110k miles has been fine with it reliability wise, you just need to stay on top of your oil changes. Issues arise with these systems because so many people trust the 15k miles per oil change on the oil bottle rather than following the 6k on their maintenance manual, then blame the manufacturers. People confuse "bulletproof" and "maintenance proof" all the time and end up murdering their engines via neglect. You can clearly tell when its in 4 cylinder though which is annoying, even though you get used to it. But according to just about everyone who drove these new DFM ones, you can't feel the deactivation at all since its dynamic with your foot and this is the first review ive heard say its clunky, and that includes other reviewers who also bash on cylinder deactivation.

Nice review. Glad your holding GM's feet to the fire with the cylinder management debackle. Might also be worth mentioning that when Toyota had an issue with frames rusting out on their medium and large trucks, they gave every truck one free frame replacement, even if it wasn't the original owner. GM's track record of support isn't as good as their competition. For something that costs practically $60,000 to drive it of the lot, this is unacceptable.

@@stevee8318 Most Toyotas after 06 are solid, VAG, Post Chrysler Merger Mercs and Hondas after 06 are solid if you watch the rear quarter panels and give them a wash every now and then in winter. Heavy duty Ford and Ram trucks of the last decade are surprisingly stout as far as the frames go. The bodies are a different story but nowhere near as bad as GM in terms of weather resistance. Mazdas are still garbage despite their promises to fix their rust issues. Kia isn't much better.

@@slowgoat6089 Washing isn't the issue. The metals and "paint" they use will fall apart if you look that them wrong. My 06 Civic is a shitbox with 260,000 kms on it. I only wash it maybe 4 times a year and the undercarriage is still clean with minor surface rust after maybe 2 rust proofing jobs. I've seen customers come in with the same GM cars every year for the last 5 years and the frames still manage to end up with a new hole or chunk gone out of them somehow. Once the rust starts on a GM product, there's almost no way to stop it.

My youtube name aside, I've had the 2013 version of the Silverado with absolutely no issues what so ever. There is a vocal minority on gm forums that cry about burning oil. However, the majority of people don't have this problem. Think about it, if it was as wide spread as most people thought. There would be a class action lawsuit appearing, and it's been how many years? A decade and a half? I'm not saying people didn't have issues, but these are the same people who don't change their oil on time more than likely. Then they are surprised when something bad happens. I actually choose the 2019 Custom (The cloth seats, which is better than leather by the way, are very supportive) this time because I like the front end more, and then I added stuff onto it. I didn't use half the stuff in my old LT. I love the styling. I think the mob of the internet is making people not use their brains again. "Oh.. 5 people here on this forum or twitter don't like it.. I want to be included in this group.. Hey guys, I don't like it either hurr hurr hurr! Please be my friend!" Also, having tested the newer rams.. Yeah, the ride might be a smidgen better, but then I thought.. I want my electronics to work in 5 years. FCA can't hire a good electrical engineer to save their lives. Having owned several FCA products over the years, it comes down to bad ground contacts and improper wire gauges. They can build a good engine, sure, but wiring a power window? Forget about it. Tested a 2019 Ford, interior quality was the same. I just have questions about the longevity of turbos. Even with their cooling systems attached to it. To be honest, I was dead even with both the Ford and Chevy. I just like the styling of the Chevy better. The Ford is pretty much a box with lights. It's like it was designed by U-Haul. I just don't see how anybody would choose a RAM product at all. Their overall reliability is sub-par when you compare them to Ford and Chevy. I know reviewers love to gush over the interiors of these things, though. Then they go "Why wouldn't you buy this?!" Well, because I don't want to be stuck on the side of the road with failing electrical components. If anybody should be getting an extended warranty, it's FCA owners. I did like the video, though. Good job, guys! :)

GM bean counters still insist on wax dipping the frames as the only corrosion protection. You can scrape it off to bare metal with your fingernail, and on a hot day you can wipe it right off with a towel. For accessing mines I rent these trucks (4x4 crew cab, chevy/gmc, ram and ford) for about a week 6 times a year for the last 6 years, so not quite 40 of them over the last 6 years. I've had equally good/bad experiences with all of them. The biggest indicator of reliability is the trim level, the lower the trim level the more reliable - like if it's got a sunroof it's about 50/50 that that works. If it's a full ton it's maybe half as reliable as the 1/2 ton. If reliability is key go cheap, get the cheapest one that meets your needs, the more you pay the less you get. The comments about the interior don't register with me, all of these trucks function practically identical inside.

I always enjoy your reviews. I shopped Ford, Ram, Chevy, and Toyota. I purchased the 2020 LT Trailboss at 42K after rebates and dealer discounts with lifetime powertrain warranty. I got cloth seats which to me seem very comfortable. The interior isn’t pretty but really has everything you would need. I feel like it handles and drives really well over all and with the 5.3 and 10 speed auto trans I am getting 18 mpg over all. The look is subjective and for me I find it to be a great looking truck. More futuristic and not so traditional and boring to look at. I didn’t choose Toyota because of bad fuel economy and with a bench front seat you get nothing but a basic somewhat outdated truck with the Tundra. Ford was nice but I wasn’t able to find one packaged the way I wanted with bench front seating and when I did it was much more on price. Ram has great interior and the Rebel is the sweet spot for me but I don’t trust the reliability over the long haul with FCA product. I like the ruggedness of a truck specifically and with the factory two inch lift and absence of Chrome as well as off-road tires and good packaging with bench seat matched with a fair price I had to choose the Boss. I’m not biased to any brand and wanted a Tundra originally due to history of reliability and they too are great looking trucks. I bought a Trailboss 2 weeks ago fresh off the lot, and I would have done a review the same exact way as you. Exterior had to grow up on me. The Bose sound system that is 'premium' is TOTALLY underwhelming. Totally. I think that's my biggest complaint. They split the audio super weird. The interior is very, very basic for a $50,000 truck. BUT...at the end of the day, I absolutely love it. I don't know why. Something about it, I just love the truck. The 10speed is so smooth. Even though I have the 5.3 it's extremely quick. I think GM should begin to perfect the interior of these bad boys, and give it an even more aggressive front end, and I think the Trailboss ends up taking over the 1500 offroad market. Easily.

I felt like there's some anti Chevy Bias from these guys, yes the interior isn't the best but i picked my 2020 Silverado after looking at options from Ram and Ford, i thought it was the overall best package taking every factor into consideration. One more note. Yes, the interior inst the best, but its still LIGHTYEARS ahead of where these vehicles were just a decade ago, there's no really "bad interiors" anymore. I'm with you, Mark. I don't understand why anyone would use a full size truck as a daily driver. Too big and too wasteful for commuting to work, great if you actually have a need for a truck because you are a tradesman or you tow boats, etc. In the 3 months since you uploaded this video, Covid-19 has changed the world we live in. Over 20 million are unemployed, millions are going to soup kitchens for free meals, and millions will soon be evicted from their homes because they aren't able to pay their rent or mortage. Most of these big, expensive and wasteful trucks will soon be repossessed when their owners can't make the high monthly payments because they are unemployed.

I agree with everything you said, I own a 5.0L F-150 FX4 Supercab and its a wonderful powerplant. I briefly worked at Hertz as a porter so I got lots of seat time in other vehicles including my fair share of both 5.3L and 6.2L Silverado's, the 5.3L was definitely adequate for most people but the 5.0L is in a different league and more closely compares to the GM 6.2L. Of all the V8 trucks I drove the 5.0L Fords and 6.2L GM's were without question the fastest, the 5.6L Titans were next down the line, then the 5.7L Hemi Rams and then the 5.7L Tundra's and in a distant last place was the 5.3L GM trucks. It's a shame the 2021+ 5.0L's have AFM built in them, I hope Ford learned from everyone else's mistakes and made a reliable system for it, only time will tell though.

Great review! I have to say, I actually own a Chevrolet Trail Boss Custom and you hit the nail on every part. There are so many glorified videos of this truck but you focused on all the problems I have with this truck. Yes, the truck is pricy but GM is giving some insane rebates. My whole family are Chevrolet fans, you have no idea how many Chevy products we have, and I actually have mixed feelings with this truck. The only real pro with this truck are the rebates and it's off road capability. I have been in places in the US where I should of killed the motor or flipped over but it still kept me alive. But, for your exact cons, I want to sell my truck. If this was a weekend get a away truck, it's OK, but it's just not confortable. Even off roading, it literally feels like you are breaking something. I rented a base model 2017 Silverado and went off roading and it was way much better in ride quality and was just as capable. Although, it has not left me stranded, I have taken this truck to the dealer three times with in a short period of time. It has had five recalls. If anyone is in the market for a truck, take my advise, get a Tundra. Yeah it gets garbage mpg but all my buddys with their Rams and F150s are switching over to Tundra just because it's reliable and has a good aftermarket community. I don't regret my purchase but I just can't stand the ride.
