I was lucky enough to be able to choose between the Sync'r and the Mason last September when my MTB got stolen. I went with Sync'r and glad I did. Although it does feel a bit like overkill for my local trails

Just picked this one up on sale for $850. I couldn’t find anything with this level of components anywhere close. I will mostly be doing sandy and gravel trails, definitely no downhill. I was nervous when I saw this video that I made the wrong choice but the alternatives you mentioned are much more expensive.

850 is a steal. Great components for that price point.

@@JFFilmsMTB I went a bit overboard, turns out I can nearly match the San Quentin geometry with a 160mm fork and 2 degree offset headset. Got a Zeb Ultimate fork and upgraded to a X01 derailleur, XX1 shifter, Sunrace 11-50 cassette, and larger front rotor all for less than the original price of $1650!

now the bike is on sale in 2023 for this week half off at less than 800 i was about to impulse buy one till i saw your video saved me some disappointment . i'll keep pounding the trails on my marin wildcat 4 9 speed i like 27.5 there almost same bike but i see 2023 mason 2 now has 10 speed shimano same fork as my marin the judy and shimano gearing interested me over microshift / race face crank mine slips a lot when i go thru 4 inch deep water or bunny hop on the marin i'll keep cruising great video saved me from dumb impulse decision and flipping over handle bars on a decent would suck

I would def stick to your main rig. $800 is a really good deal for this bike but considering what you already have, 800 going into your current rig could go a lot further. Microshift stuff is great btw we use it all the time at the shop. If you are interested in a drive train you could opt for deore or even NX eagle. Add a RS pike, Fox 34, or a Bomber Z2 on there and you would have a whole different bike still possible staying under 800.

@@JFFilmsMTB i was struggling if a shimano 10,11 speed would prefer would they even fit i'm not against microshift either i have advent 9 speed currently and the raceface main gear any how thinking rear cogs are 42 teeth almost positive feel like they should be 52 and raceface main crank is 34 teeth i'm not close to my bike or i'd have exact numbers its real close or i'd count the teeth but on the main gear its tight i not sure i can go larger upfront it would be great to have that improvement i push my 9 speed hard microshift as you say it takes a good beating your correct with my upgraded Marin if the gears could go higher it would be the bomb . i'm getting stronger and my legs they push harder i put my bike thru little under 500 miles a month i just cruise at mild pace hmm tour de france warm up speed my cruising speed as for the fork your right i have a old 27.5 rock shock pike on my older bike i have thought of gutting that bike its Frankenstein bike old huffy with a insane front fork on 7 speed laughs soon as i do my daughter will want ride bike again laughs hard

I got the Mason 2, 2 years ago. And I'm already looking for an upgrade. What would you recommend under 2500? Im also 6 ft 4 if that matters lol. Great video, I wish this video was uploaded before I got the Mason 2. Also, what grips and pedals do you have?
@JFFilmsMTB

Haha I wish I knew all of this before as well. 2500 is a fantastic budget for a bike especially if you go used. You can a decent full suspension or a really nice hardtail for that money. If you are looking for a full sus I would recommend a Canyon Spectral, Giant Trance, or a Stumpjumper st. For hardtails, the ones mentioned in the video, Canyon stoic, Marin san Quentin as well as possibly a Rubber Side Down Sergeant. Any of those bikes new or used will do great. And for your height I would definitely recommend an XL size for all of those bikes. The grips I had are PNW loam levers ($20), and the pedals were E'thirteens ($50). I have since sold the bike though and used that money towards a new bike. I would recomend that as well to help cover the cost of buying a new bike but don't sell before you buy incase a deal doesn't work out. Thanks for the sub, much appreciated.

@@JFFilmsMTB Thank you, a lot of good information. I currently have a creaking noise whenever I put force onto the pedal. Have you had any problems like that?

Would this review apply to somebody who is just now getting into MTB and doesn’t hit jumps or go too crazy? Just simple trail riding.

I would still opt for something like the marin san quentin and the canyon stoic. This bike does do well on flowy trails, but there are just better bikes for cheaper out there to progress on. Have fun :)

I guess sketchy is relative. I grew up riding bikes with 120mm stems on 71 degree head tube angles. I find 68 degrees to be perfect on XC, aggressive trails depending on the intent of the ride.

Yeah looking back this bike was plenty capable for it's intended uses. The bike just didn't align with my preferences at the time and I wanted something more aggressive. I still hold to my statement in the video in that there are better deals out there nonetheless.
