AC/DC are/were all great people. My Wife flew from Heathrow to Miami with both my kids in the late seventies (when they were toddlers), AC/DC were onboard. The members of AC/DC provided more help in getting her off the plane and through the officialdom than BA were. They carried the boys and their pushchairs - anyone with children will tell how much sheer stuff you take for toddlers on an intercontinental flight (specially as I was in Cannes for MIDEM at the time). No one is allowed to badmouth AC/DC in my presence! Best, Pete.

I just had an idea for when John Mayer (or any artist) comes to Andertons. You already did 3 Sounds Like John Mayer and tried to make his pedalboard on a budget, so why not try to make a Sound Like John Mayer BY John Mayer ? It could be really fun to see him wander around the store, choose his rig and seeing what he is thinking when he choose a piece of equipement (why does he take this pedal, this guitar/amp ? What kind of sound is he looking for etc). You could even give him a setup like he forgot his rig at home and all he has on him is 1500£, and he need something to play a Grateful Dead & Co concert, or a John Mayer Trio concert, etc ! Great video, take care of yourself !

A few years ago I went into my local guitar shop to buy my first electric guitar. I was thinking squire or epiphone but ended up buying an electromatic jet. So much guitar for the money - it was $650 Australian dollars and had a higher quality finish than some American made guitars that cost well over $2 grand. The new double cuts cost a little more but still retail for around $900 AUD. Based on Lee's recommendation I'll be getting one as soon as stores open back up. To anyone wanting an affordable guitar I can't speak more highly of the Gretsch jets.

I have wanted a Gretsch for many years, but as I got older that interest lessened, but Lee, you have revived that feeling again with the G5222. The fact that it is more than reasonably priced is nice, but hearing all the accolades about the guitar and listening to the sound, I just might have my next guitar in mind. I will only allow myself to have five, as I can get carried away buying sometimes, and there is one spot left; for a Gretsch? The Gretsch name brings back to me a very wonderful time in rock and roll music, the 60’s Rock ‘N Roll British Invasion. It was a time when you couldn’t wait for that next new song to come out, or the next new band with a brand new sound!

I’m American, so I can speak of “RAT RODS” with a bit of authority, not really, but bear with me. Imagine a do it yourself guy that buys an older American V8 car and decides to turn it into a proper hot rod on a budget. In the winter, when he is stuck in his garage, he decides to pull the interior (to ready it for new upholstery), he sands it down and takes out the door glass and primers it (to ready it for paint), and then to get it running he upgrades parts as he goes. He puts a premium on 1/4 mile drag times and burning rubber at the stop light, so he spends the last of his savings on an Edelbrock intake manifold, Holley Carb, Long tube headers and dual exhaust, a more aggressive cam, larger fuel pump, and some sort of shorter gear and locker for the rear. Because after all, going fast in your car on the road is better than admiring your pretty car in the garage. What you get as a result is a car that hauls ass, isn’t finished, still rolls around with primer, and no headliner, carpet, or frills. Since it is a cool as hell and he gets compliments everywhere he goes, it is going to remain “Ratty” and probably better brakes, before that expensive paint job the owner doesn’t have money to get. Ironically, the ‘rat rod look’ gained traction among folks that have a lot of money and want to look plain, tough, and impressive. The same kind of folk ride new Harley Davidsons and buy Gibson Les Pauls, I imagine. As a result, the rattyness has established itself as a look and trend all its own.

I regularly play a vintage 1963 Gretsch Double Cut Duojet for work and have tried out the top end Malcolm reissue. The new one is closer than I thought it would be. Almost an acoustic guitar as the block in the center stops around the bridge and the top floats freely from there. Mine is practically a banjo. It has the sparkle drum covering on maple that moves like CRAZY. It is louder acoustically than my 335. These new all solid PAUL LIKE Electromatic Jets are not the same category. They are solid body Gibson style guitars with Ray Butts designed pickups that take them out of the Gibson category (once plugged in) with their top end sparkle and zero mud. They are a great first guitar for a student who wants to get good and can't decide between PAFs or Tele pickups yet. They are great back up guitars...and yes, they are great "character" guitars for your tour... if you break one, you won't cry about replacing it. If you are watching this and drool over real old school 6120s, best to look past the cosmetics and learn about "trestle bracing" vs open bracing and urethane vs nitro before you buy. If you are a hard core AC/DC Malcolm fan, you want that hollow quality in the higher priced model. He set his amps pretty low gain and the fatness you hear is that nearly-hollow guitar with the filtertron. It also feels right for those Malcolm riffs. Fun video, guys. Skøl!
@teerexness

Lee keeps saying that the double jet is a solid body. I have an Electromatic double jet that is heavily chambered from 2015. It's so heavily chambered that I installed Variax electronics into it, by simply cutting a larger hole in the back for the electronics! I also got an Electromatic Pro Jet in 2016 which is also heavily chambered. I was under the impression that all Gretsch Jets are basically just compact, semi-hollowbody guitars without sound holes. I think this contributes to their wonderful, lively tone as well. Where I don't have any dispute is regarding how shockingly good these guitars are. Not just for the money, but period! These little honeys have stopped my obsession for acquiring much more expensive guitars, in its tracks. My wife sends her love!

Duo-Jets, single cut, double cut, filter Tron, Dynasonic (my fave) - don’t matter. They’re all wizard. I’ve had many Gretsches and liked them all, but I fell in love with a single cut, black, Dynasonic (single coil) DJ with a Bigsby. I’ve played lots of Les Pauls and have three, a ’54 Goldtop, a 2001 reissue ’59 Burst with real PAFS in it and a recent re-issue custom shop SG. They’re all great, but the DJ blows them all away. Don’t know if they really don’t know but you can ADJUST the stiffness of a bigsby to customise the feel of it to your needs. Its he screw that holds the arm of the bigsby wich is held in place with a little spring on the inside. Makes all the difference.

I literally just ordered that Malcom Young look alike g5222. Can’t wait to get it in my hands. This video, amongst a few others, convinced me to pull the trigger.

It took me 40 minutes to watch this video because I replayed Lee's opening solo like... 30 times 😂

It's nice that Gretsch has finally taken off the "Electromatic" branding from the headstock. I would have probably purchased a double jet and a corvette earlier but the company insisted on making the 'second line' status plan to everyone.

The first time I saw a double jet in a music shop, hanging vertically on the wall, I immediately thought it looked like a raccoon or a teddy bear, especially with the control placement. I have never been able to shake that since lol

If Lee likes it, it has to be great. Nice to see the enthusiasm from you fellas. There wasn't much "gain" to be played when I started in 1958, but, it seems we (bands) had to play it relentlessly from the 60's on through today. I have been tired of gain ever since then. I don't hear gain when I think of Gretch. Maybe on another video, we could hear the musical cleans sounds of Gretch. Maybe we could remove some midrange from the e.q. (alot). Thanks however for this review that most players will enjoy! Lee, we still have to hear you play every Blues song ever written in one video! Glad to see you back there...

I love my Gretch 5655t . I put some sperzel locking tuners on it and it shreds. I got the Casino Gold one and its beautiful, as they all are. I traded my 5120 for it, because I like how thin it is. It sounds amazing. 🙂

How’s the tuning stability on it (both before and after you upgraded the tuners)?

Holy smokes. Lee nearly had Pete in that intro solo swap, and that's one of the highest compliments I can pay either of you gents.
