This week, I got my LG Gram 17 with the 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD. First impressions: 1. It's light for a 17" laptop, but not crazy light. It's still a laptop. 2. The build quality is good. Reviewers show how flexible it is, but I don't think you'd notice it unless you look for it. The only thing I'd say is that the hinge is not quite as stiff as I would like. If you tried using it on a train or plane, it might bother you. On a desk it is stable. 3. The screen is glossy. (How I wish it was matt!) I got a screen protector to reduce the reflectivity, but I couldn't get it on without air bubbles (which I hate even more), so for now I'm living with the gloss. But it's fantastic having a 17" screen for productivity (and day trading). And it's clear and bright. It's overall a good panel. 4. Keyboard: It's okay, apart from a couple of differences from a standard UK keyboard layout. In particular: the way the "|" key is situated adjoining the Left Shift key; and the horizontal Return key (which means I sometimes hit the "#" key by mistake). But the typing experience is good so far. 5. Okay, so it's not a powerhouse. I bought it knowing that it would be fine for productivity, but not expecting to do anything particularly demanding. 6. It was a bit laggy on first use. I did a clean install of Windows... and now it's running perfectly. 7. The sound is okay. It's fine, if not anything special. So far, I'm happy with my purchase, but these things I would change if I could redesign it for next year: - matt screen (!) - stiffer hinge - slightly better, upward firing speakers - keyboard layout - an Ethernet port would be nice, rather than the Dongle provided... - And a more powerful CPU would be nice. Ideally, a Ryzen CPU with their better integrated graphics would be fab.

Additionally does the laptop get slower because there are new amd mobile cpus? They could be faster (they won´t) but that changes nothing about the performance lmao. I own a 2070 but surprisingly it didn´t get slower when the 2070 Super came out. Love my 2020 LG Gram (17"). I had a 2015 Macbook Pro (15") before this one, and I totally agree with your comment about the trackpad and the keyboard being quite an adjustment on the Gram. I adjusted to the keyboard fairly quickly, but getting used to the trackpad took months. It was a nightmarish transition, but now that I have my settings adjusted the way I like and I have gotten used to the system it works just fine. BTW, this battery is by far the best. If I want to head out to a cafe to work, I don't have to worry about bringing along the battery charger. I forgot my battery charger when I went to work one day, and somehow got 10 hours out of it with still some juice left. Love my LG Gram. Thanks for the review!

Every inch of Windows can be tweaked and customized to a users liking. I am a power user and I like to do things my way. Furthermore I am one of those people that loves the latest hardware, something that can’t be had with a MacBook. If Dell is in schedule, they will be introducing a newly designed XPS 15, 16 or 17 by the end of this month. It will likely have the latest hardware and even though I have no idea what the new design looks like, I already know I’m ready to order it.

LG please keep the barrelplug and USBC charging duo, do not take either away, thanks. The barrel plug usually charges faster, but most of all it saves you one usbc/tb3 ports for other things besides charging, but you can still be use usbc for charging if you like, so you have to option and are not limited to one way to charge your laptop. Please do not ask manufactures to take away the traditional charging port, as that effectively takes away a usbc/tb3 port also. I see many reviewers actually asking for this. They seem to want less choices rather than more, for asthetic reasons. Now if the usbc/tb3 could not charge, then I would agree with you.

About that barrel port charger - for what it's worth, I would prefer a barrel charger as a fallback in my USB-C/Thunderbolt charging laptops. Every laptop USB-C/Thunderbolt implementation I've seen outside of Apple has been soldered onto the motherboard, so if that port breaks, or if something gets stuck in it, it tends to be really hard to repair - not a good thing if that's the only way to charge the laptop. Barrel ports are usually much easier to replace if needed - even Lenovo's old square-tip adapter was usually attached to the motherboard using a socketed cable.

This is especially important for touchscreen laptops and companies aspiring to pass the one handed opening test (horrible metric for quality). To test screen wobble I like to lift the laptop off the desk gripping just under the keyboard, then shake it front to back to see how much force it takes to wobble the screen. I work, fly, and live by my laptop - I don't always work from a perfectly flat or stable surface and bouncing reflections on my screen drive me insane

Hey, Dave! Feedback about those few quick zoom-ins and your usage of second camera. I don't remember seeing these on your older videos, is it something you started doing lately? I felt it added sort of visual noise to the video and made it harder for me to focus on the actual content. Otherwise still a great video, and gave it a thumbs up. :)

looks like a awesome laptop for web developing especially for freelancers or people who move around a lot in general but would rather work on a bigger screen.

I feel you underestimate how good this laptop is for many users. Am a developer, and the 17inch laptop and 3 pound combination is simply a killer. + Very nice battery. Bought the 2019 model, and honestly, there is no way i get another laptop anymore. The 2020 model does seem even better though.

Love your videos dave but i just noticed something about the editing. I feel like the secondary angle when youre talking is too similar to your main angle. When you cut from b roll to the secondary angle, it kinda just looks like the main angle but youre looking at a prompter. I get the look youre going for but i feel like there should be a bigger distance between the two camera angles to make it look better

Love the video Dave, I prefer the more chilled out tone of voice though. The camera angle is something i'm not used to either but its good to try out new stuff, maybe it'll stick!

The reason why they give you the barrel jack charger is so that you can use the thunderbolt connector simultaneously.

While it's true that LG grams have always come with SATA SSDs, the slots work with NVME drives too. I replaced my 15Z980 2018 15" LG gram's drive with a 1TB NVME drive.

I have this laptop. Pricing is 1499, or 1500 currently at Costco. It should go on sale though so I'm hoping to get the difference back at that time, and I would advise waiting till then if you can. Should knock off 2-300 dollars. I feel like the keyboard was improved a bit from last years model. Hope this helps people.

Just wanted to point out that since there's only one USB-C thunderbolt cable it makes sense to have a separate charging port so it can be utilized and charged at the same time. That being said, two USB-C thunderbolt ports on either side of the machine would obviously be even better.

I bought two 17" LG Gram 2019 Model from Costco during Holidays with $500 rebate for each. Totally paid about $2200. Upgrade one with single 32 GB DRAM, and 2TB nvme drive cost about $350. Replace Windows with Ubuntu. I can run MacOS, Windows 10 virtual machine along with several Linux OSs on this 40 GB DRAM/3TB storeage 17" lightest machine. I no longer use my MAC for daily working any more, instead of using LG. I hope LG will add 2 slot DIMM on this laptop for next release.

The regular charger is a bit of an issue. If the usb-c port is in use by a usb drive then you have to charge with the adapter, and you need to have it with you. If it had two usb-c ports then it could charge from one and still have a spare for an external drive etc. It's probably a cost thing and maybe leaving something for next year's model, but it's definitely a flaw for this year and a sales detractor. The Dell XPS has more usb-c's but it is much more expensive.

My next laptop will be LG Gram for sure. The less weight and more battery is most important to make decision. But hopely LG Gram will be shipped with CPU AMD on it

For a 17" it is pretty light, but for smaller models, like the 14", they can't seem to make it lighter. I have a 900 series Samsung laptop from 2012 that weighs 1.16kg and is actually thinner at 0.5 inches. All they, and by 'they' I mean every company, not just LG, can offer 8 years later is 100-150 grams lighter.

I bought this laptop and first test results: it compiles code faster than my previous Dell XPS 15 with a i7-7700HQ, which is a 45w processor. Dell aggressively overclocks it first, but like a minute later it reaches 100 degrees and drops the CPU clock speed down to very low regions which is an approach which I hate. Dave also mentions this in other videos. LG gram seems to be able to keep turbo clock speeds much better with a 15w CPU, which is ridiculous.

To be honest, just one RAM-slot on a semi-premium ultrabook is ridiculous. It seems they think we should be grateful it isn't soldered on, but it really limits your RAM capabilities and upgrade potential.

My 2 year old lg gram came with a 512gb nvme. I still have it along with the new gram. Dual nvme with raid and nicer speakers are nice editions. I don't like how they limited the power to increase battery life without the ability to change it completely.

What the market reeeaaaallly needs is a small workstation laptop just like this, except with a 120hz screen. I'd love to reduce the size of the laptop I have to carry around for work, and I have a desktop for gaming. But I can never go back to 60hz for photo editing and graphic design.

For what it's worth, here's a pretty niche use case for that barrel plug. I have a Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro that only charges thru usb-c. It has 2 usb-c's but only 1 has PD and alt dp mode. I use 2 external monitors at work so i have to use a type c hub to charge the laptop while using the alt dp mode (along with the hdmi port). Since the hub has usb-a's, i used to plug the wireless mouse and keyboard dongle there, along with a printer and dedicated document scanner. However, whenever I turn off the laptop charger, it cycles the power in the hub which causes the everything plugged in the usb-a ports to freeze. I tried connecting them to the other type c using the hub and it didn't affect connection after turning the charger on and off. But since alt dp is on the other usb c port only, I now have to use 2 hubs, both of which I am not maximizing the use of. If there was that barrel plug, I would only plug 3 cables instead of 4, and I save about 30 bucks worth of dongle.

I have a 2019 & 2020 LG Gram 17. Like them both -- both are daily drivers and have held up great to daily abuse. The 2020 runs *much* hotter. But today, re-pasted with Arctic MX-4 and now 5-8 C cooler (and quieter).

I think Barrel Plug + USB C is a lot more sensible, PLEASE KZitemrs, don't let this phase out with these herd reviews of yours, without a second thought!! This is a great solution! This way, when you are Power-Using your system, let's say docked, you use only the useless charging port for charging and not sacrificing one FULLY FUCNTIONAL, FULLY CAPABLE port just for stupid charging!

I had work buy me this model instead of the 2021 version. LG kind of went a little backwards with the 2021 edition with no longer having upgradable memory. I realize this is because of the LPDDR4X memory, but I personally need a ton of memory because I run a lot of VMs on my Gram. The 2021 tops out at 16GB of memory and tbh that’s not enough nowadays for real productive work.

Dave , you have forgotten the most important thing - the glossy screen! It probably does not have any anti reflective layer and with the dark screens it just reflects ALL (!) it is very difficult to work with - comparing to the glossy 'golden standard'

I don't understand why LG have the speakers firing downward. Literally just mount the 180 degrees from how they are and CNC a grill the same way they did on the base of the machine.
