The world woke up to the phenomenal talent of the Argentinian pianist Martha Argerich in 1964 when she won the International Chopin Piano Competition at the age of 24. She is now arguably the greatest living pianist and can sell out concerts in minutes. You are looking at, to answer a question below, the greatest pianist alive and has been for years. She is ranked 5th best pianist ever behind Debussy. She ranks first with me. An amazing individual. Being 80 has nothing to do with her playing. She is the BEST! I believe she could play most of this without looking at the keys.

Damn, when she picks up the notes somewhere between 30:15 and 30:30 she is right on top of that pace and has no problem sending it home. And the respect she has for the conductor looking to him to ensure smooth tempo changes shows you she works well with a group and knows a good orchestra is important. Its also indicative of her playing the purest interpretation of the music as possible for modern age.

Amazing that she still has the chops to tackle this highly demanding concerto. I think Previn and the LSO were better accompanists for her back in ‘77. In that filmed concert, the planets were all aligned. Same with her Rach 3 with Chailly, in Berlin in ‘82. I’ve written this before but how I wish Argerich had committed the Chopin Études, both sets, on record. I am certain she could play them now if she wanted. Can’t someone throw her a pile of Euros on the condition she learns them? 🙂

The timing is really off, percussion and winds consistently come in late. I would have to think when musicians are that far apart, speed of sound becomes a real issue. As would the fact that you're used to being able to hear other sections much louder, so you can no longer rely on auditory cues. Something this fast and furious, these latency issues would definitely make it sound less tight. It's so ambitious to try to play this with a socially distanced orchestra! It'd be much better to play something a little less ambitious, but I commend them for trying.

@@azurbtkl3901 She looks startled at a few points that things don't sound together. I do think speed of sound matters! I play electric guitar with a wireless unit and if I just walk 25 meters away from the stage, I'm shocked at how much delay there is compared to when I'm on stage, and it looks like the percussionists are that far away from her.
Martha with an injured finger is still the BEST PIANIST and NOBODY is CLOSE to her way of playing this concert.
