Our good friend, Romy, made it happen again. We toured the Muskoka Region in October, just right in time for the colourful autumn foliage. Yes, this is that magic moment where every leaf seems to be like a flower. Our main objective though was to do a night sky photography at Torrance Barrens Dark Sky Preserve considering the weather forecasts are favourable with clear, cloudless sky for that particular night. However, our plans were thwarted and hopes dashed when upon arriving at the site, we were told outright by park wardens that the place is packed and parking spaces are full within the area. They were about to hand out parking violation tickets and so we had to find somewhere to stay for the night and resume our autumn fall drive the next day. Prior to the Torrance visit we had a whirlwind tour of the Muskoka Region driving around Lake Muskoka from Bracebridge to Gravenhurst then to Port Carling by way of Muskoka District Road 118 West and round about to Bala via Southwood Road then to Torrance Barrens.
We were not totally disappointed with this adventure as lots of sights were in the offing. Gravenhurst with decent Lookouts, was having an 80% leaf colour change. Hiking the Huckleberry Rock Trail is a challenge for us and we are glad to have reached its Lookout of Milford Bay and Lake Muskoka. We also somehow managed to checkout the other unofficial Lookout of Muskoka District Road 118 West. Enter at your own risk. This one is off limits as a sign says it is an Accident-Prone Area. There are no safety barriers on the cliff edge.
Trent-Severn Waterway Lock 44 - Big Chute Maritime Railway was our final stop and really made our day. Amazing piece of engineering marvel indeed.
