Update to video: The 2021 Dual Sport 3 uses a Shimano Acera rear derailleur in the images, but the specifications on Trek's website list a Shimano Alivio derailleur. This may just be a mistake, but either way these derailleurs should not be too different.

Hello Talalipop I have a question and I would like your advice on. I recently purchased a Dual sport 3 in an Xl size. I called to have the bike changed to a size large but they only have the DS4 in stock. I don’t know much about the 1x11 drivetrain compared to the 2x9 drivetrain of the DS3 but do you think it’s worth the extra $300 to upgrade to the DS4? I know about the lockout and lighter forks but beside that I think the drivetrain take a hit when it comes to riding on flat roads for speed. Am I wrong or is the 1x11 better the the 2x9 all around ?
@TalalipopMTB
4 жыл бұрын
@@AlexRodriguez-tg2gv 1x drivetrains are usually more trail oriented and that's why full on mountain bikes often have them. It mainly just makes things simpler so you don't have the front derailleur and there's less chance of the chain skipping gears or other problems when you're riding hard on a trail. I do agree that you lose a lot of gears for on road use. If you can, try the bike out and see if there is a good range on the gears for your riding style; that would probably be the best way to figure it out. I think I would personally prefer the dual sport 3 since as a hybrid bike it has a better balance of road and trail use with the 2x drivetrain.

There is one review of the DS 3 2021 on YT and it seems that the 2021 model still comes with the Acera rear derailleur, so I think there's no change from the 2020 model except for the new color scheme.

Save your extra pennies and start off at least at DS3. Thats if you ride/commute a lot. Or you will just be wasting your cash & time. I bought a 2017 DS2 to use as my daily commuter and it lasted about a year before needing a complete rebuild. Any parts less than Acera didn't last a year. But in fairness I ride 22 miles a day Monday thru Friday. The brakes are awesome. The cockpit setup is pretty good...replacing the grips helped a lot. The remote lockout shock is ok-ish but I would have like the control on the handlebars like the DS4. Replaced the saddle after the first month of use. The aluminum frame....well...it doesn't rust. Aluminum kinda beats the crap out of yeah. So know that going into your purchase. Air down the tires and going wider helps the vibration. Treks rear rack works awesome. Their Bontrager lights are incredible! Spendy but great and worth the money.

D C: You’re nuts with your weight weenie comments lol. What it “feels like” to you and the actual performance (time it takes you to get somewhere) are two VERY different things. 3 lbs more of dead weight is negligible to riders like you. Instead take 5 lbs off your belly and use tubeless tires - and you’ll see some real differences.

Just getting into biking and from the type of riding I’m going to do I was told the duel sport is the way to go. My problem is deciding on the 2 or 3? The 2 is a 3x and the 3 is a 2x on gearing, is that a big deal? There’s quite a big price difference too. Any suggestions or advice on deciding between the DS 2 and 3 would be appreciated. Thanks
@TalalipopMTB
4 жыл бұрын
There's some little differences here and there like slightly better brakes and tubeless ready rims in the DS 3, but the main difference is the drivetrain since it is upgraded to a higher level shimano groupset which should just work better in general in terms of shifting and lasting longer. The 2x drivetrain just simplifies the bike so there's less chance of the chain skipping gears and other issues, and usually those are more oriented toward trail riding since you don't need all those speeds. However, you're only losing 6 speeds from the DS 2 to the DS 3 so I personally don't think it would be that bad. I think your decision just depends on if you think you need those better components. For general riding the DS 2 should be totally fine in my opinion, but if you want to push your bike more and maybe go on some slightly rougher trails or something I'd consider the DS 3.

Oh interesting... I checked Trek's website and they do list the Alivio under the specifications, but in the images of the bike it uses an Acera derailleur. Talalipop MTB I checked with my bike shop rep and this is what he said “Things like that can be for many reasons but most likely had to do with availability of parts and components when the bike was being assembled in the factory. On Trek's website under the specifications of the bike they mention the following: ***We reserve the right to make changes to the product information contained on this site at any time without notice, including with respect to equipment, specifications, models, colors, and materials. Bike and frame weights are based off Trek pre-production painted frames at time of publication. Weights may vary in final production.*** Trek and the various manufactures do their best at keeping the spec up to date on their website, but this could also be a permanent change and the website just hasn't been updated yet to reflect the new spec.”

If all you are looking for all dark mode then the lithium grey is it but I rather the factory Orange which my shop is letting me exchange for the orange. Otherwise the bike is awesome, the gears are swift and quite it’s the perfect bike for the city and light trails.

Such a shame that the only affordable Shimano 2021 with 11 speed is the Dual Sport 4 but with the larger crankset gear of 42T it won't be a good climber. The Roscoe 6, Marlin 7 should have been 11 speed this year but they are 10 speed! Makes me want to just buy the new Deore 12 speed groupset and put it on my old bike and have better gearing than all those I mentioned. If I were buying a dual sport the Giant Roam 0 would be my choice. Cheaper and with XT and SLX components and better gear ratios.

I don't know much about the Giant bike, but I would say the Dual Sport is for people who are riding more on light trails since it comes with the suspension, while the FX is for people who are riding more on the road. They are both hybrid bikes and can do both light trails and road riding, but I think FX is built more for road while DS is built more for trails.

Does the 2021 DS3 have a preload adjuster on the left side shock? Trek spec sheet/marketing photo shows one, but looking at another KZitemr with the same model I kept looking for it but didn’t see it...or does the lockout perform this function as well?

Oh that’s really interesting. I checked the video I took at the store again and it doesn’t have one there either! I went back and re-read the fine print on their website and it says, “We reserve the right to make changes to the product information contained on this site at any time without notice, including with respect to equipment, specifications, models, colors, and materials.” I’d probably be fine with it if the lockout also functioned as a preload adjuster, if Trek were to offer that assurance, but I doubt it.

Dual sport 2 2021 has a bend in the middle tube in Small size which does not mean it's meant for women . Some colors might be women specific but bend in the middle tube is not. This is Trek's Explanation to it : Size Small frames have a top tube that dips down as it approaches the seat tube. This makes for a lower standover height, which is good for shorter riders because it allows them to straddle their bike more easily. Larger frames (M and up) have a straight top tube because taller riders typically don't have the same issues.

Aw thank you so much! I’ll do a video on the FX series soon and hopefully compare all the bikes in each lineup so I can better understand the bikes. I don’t know too much about them right now, but from making this video DS2 has some good components and isn’t too expensive. I would probably buy that one if I had to choose.

@@TalalipopMTB brooo ,I do not have much money, yet I am thinking of collecting money and getting a bike. At this price would I be okay to take this bike or wait . Or go with lower model Marlin 5 or ds 1 . Thankyou for replying me ♥️😊

I cant believe they put a prowheel crank on the 2021. Crappiest crank on the market .Prowheel is a walmart bike spec.

The 2022 dual sport gen 4 bikes are exactly the same as the 2023 dual sport gen 4 bikes. Is that what you're referring to?

@@TalalipopMTB Sorry, I must've gotten you confused. I meant every year, doesn't Trek make Dual Sport Gen 1-5? So theres Dual Sport Gen 1-5 2023, and also Dual Sport 1-5 2022. Am I right?
@TalalipopMTB

No that's not true actually. They currently only make Gen 4 and Gen 5. This Gen naming system is new for 2023 so they just started with the current models.
