The third annual Global Wheelchair Tennis Challenge was held on Saturday, January 25 and Sunday, January 26, 2020, at California State University, Long Beach in Long Beach, California, USA. A total of 12 junior wheelchair tennis players from Japan, Canada, and the United States were invited to play international friendly matches at the event, which was organized by B-Adaptive Foundation (BAF), a non-profit organization based in Orange County, California.
The Japanese players arrived in Los Angeles on Jan. 21st. During their seven-day stay in Los Angeles, they took part in a variety of activities in addition to their matches and practices. They visited tourist spots such as Hollywood and Santa Monica, experiencing daily shopping at supermarkets and other places in a barrier-free environment that is different from that of Japan. They also visited the Memorial Coliseum, the main stadium for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Organizing Committee, which was an inspiring experience for them as athletes.
This was the third Global Challenge, and we have asked the athletes to travel unaccompanied by their parents or guardians. For some of the Japanese players, it was their first time traveling abroad. Even so, they helped each other to overcome one of these challenges, and it gave them a lot of confidence.
It would surely be our pleasure if they become athletes who will be able to compete in the Los Angeles Paralympics in 2028. But more than that, we would like them to experience a lot of things through these activities and feel a lot of things. And when they grow up, I hope they will become leaders in building a society that is tolerant of diversity.
