We rented a GMC Denali on a recent visit to Colorado and I was very impressed with its off-road capability. While we weren't on Jeep Rubicon type trails in Moab, we did experience some rocky ascents which were maybe a bit more extreme than what was displayed in this video. My experience was that similar in Auto and the E-diff seemed to perform better than 4 Lo.

Not that it really matters but the binding in traditional 4wd systems occurs because the front and rear are locked together, not due to the left/right being locked together. Definitely would like to see more auto 4wd on pickups though, sometimes even rain is enough to get the rear tires to light up without any weight in the bed. One of my favorite features of my limited 4Runner is the full time 4WD with a 2 speed transfer case.

Auto 4WD/full-time 4WD is awesome, I love it in my GMC Canyon during the winter. I just can't see myself buying a 4WD vehicle that doesn't have full-time 4WD now. Not so much when its on the dash, but down on the center console next to your hand. it is effortless to shift and very natural feeling. Im a Land Cruiser guy, but nice to see GM step up their game. This SUV is a very big improvement from the previous model in comfort and quality wise. One thing I noticed that GM should review, the rear arms and axle are too low for a off road ride, Other than that I think GM starting to take the right path. The Middle East is a big market for cars and specially for SUVs and Trucks. General Motors SUVs and Trucks used to be a fierce competitor with Toyota between 1970s and the beginning of 2000s in the Middle East. Usually in my commute I just keep it in 2WD but with any inclement weather AUTO is great as it is for light off-roading/camping. For winter months I switch out my 22" rims/tires for a set of 17s I picked up on the cheap with AT/all-weather snow rated tires. The tech in current models has come a long way but my 3rd Gen Yukon now has 212k miles and is still going strong for all I ask it to do.

Good video! I’m glad to see the vehicles tested. I previously owned a 2001 Suburban and it did not have any of the modern traction capabilities. Just 4wd hi and lo. It was good and I never got stuck anywhere. So these newer modern vehicles have to be that much better. Though I wonder if they’ve got heavier. They look it. I will say I really do not like 22 inch wheels. I would prefer 18” wheels on this. And from this video and another Ive seen I would probably much prefer the Yukon AT4. They want you to think newer is better, that’s what the marketing department tells you. But really, they do everything they can to cut cost out of their parts, replacing mechanical lockers with electronic imposters, outsourcing to foreign suppliers, and the thing that suffers is performance, quality, capability, reliability and longevity. Then TFLoffroad tested it and thought theirs didn't have a LSD at all LOL. Considering today's buyers, the most those two SUVs will see is a Dirt road. If it was anything like the Toyota Sequoia, it'd be a decent system. That runs a torsen center differential, which is lockable & you and run RWD only if you choose to.

The clutch-based full-time 4WD systems have been around for years and haven proven to be reliable and stout. The Magna MP3200-series transfer cases used in GM vehicles is the same system Jeep has used in the no-2WD-mode-available Jeep Grand Cherokee for years. The only caveat with these systems is using Auto 4WD in the sand where there's constant slippage, it will lead to an overtemp condition in the t-case and the computer will disable 4WD and then you're stuck. Running in 4H or 4L instead of 4Auto will prevent that from happening since the clutch ends up fully locked with no slippage. That said, if anyone is unlucky enough to own a Ram 1500 with the BW 44-44 transfer case just plan on not using it off-road very often as even in 4L there have been problems with it not fully locking and also when you turn the engine off it actually disengages the clutch and you'll be in 2WD, even in 4L. The Magna transfer cases stay mechanically fully locked in 4H and 4L so this isn't a problem.

Leveling unavailable....were you in 4-low? The vehicle only goes into the fourth raised level if it is in 4low...perhaps the leveling system unlocked when you took it out of 4low?

Good review. A question though. Do you know, comparing the Yukon Denali with its off road cousin the Yukon AT4, does GMC add an inch to the road clearance height on the AT4, or are they the same height start to finish at all adjustable air suspension levels? My understanding is that the Denali base height is 8", but it can be raised to 9" in 4H and 10" in 4L. I think a while back I heard one reviewer say the AT4 was an inch higher, so I am wondering if maybe the AT4 has been lifted and starts at a base height of 9" and can go up to 10" in 4H and 11" in 4L. I imagine that would be great if true. But if not, do you know, can the Denali or AT4 be lifted an inch or two if someone wanted, and would that cause any problems?

The ancient pushrod gas motors use fuel like it’s 1955 and gas is 25 cents a gallon. The 2.7t gas engine should be standard on lower trims. The Duramax should be standard on higher trims and optional on lower trims.

Why is there not a clear distinction between lane "nudging" and lane "centering"? I agree there can be a huge difference in how these features behave.. one is almost like auto pilot and the other is far from it.

I think the reason for the Lsd now responsing quickly in 4L is because it turns off the traction , i am not sure if its the main the reason but i think its reason in the middle east the tahoe z71 comes standard with the ELSD like the yukon instead of the MLSD , i tried it in the desert it was okay i mean it did its job , but i kinda wish it had a locker which could have been much easier instead of waiting for the car to spin awhile

Great review Ryan, and great camera placement! Also a question: as far as I know, in Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra you cannot have the "off-road mode" in 4Lo (I think only normal mode is available in 4Lo), is that also true for the Tahoe as well?

GMC told us the e-diff acts like a locker specifically in 4Low on this vehicle. We didn’t ask Chevy. (Based on our experience, their PR person would take two weeks to get back to us and then have an unspecific answer.)

The traction control behaviour is about what I would expect. 4Auto is nothing special, it just controls the coupling in the transfer case that sends power to the front axle, nothing more. Most of these programs for 4Auto are pretty sophisticated and would be acting as if in 4hi in a situation like that. The reason it looked worse in 4lo is that it turned off traction control it seems.

I’m sure it does man ... it’s all super subjective ... and is super dependent on knowing what you’re doing too. Momentum prolly would have cured that ... I’ll have to rewatch it ... it’s been a month since I commented on this video lol 4lo is for crawling uphill ... typically disengages Any assistant devices or systems ... so you just sit there spinning tires with the vehicle not even trying to actually gain traction ... power is just gonna exit out the path of least resistance on both axles Hi is all anybody would need there ... and if you’re lucky it will figure it out with the computer systems. I have had good experience with Toyota’s atrac system in my 4Runner, which in my model can only be engaged in 4lo ... so at least you can turn something ‘traction’ on even in low with Toyota ... dunno if GM does that ... but it’s a big heavy vehicle ... just spinning in lo ... as demonstrated anit gonna do shit

I rented a Chevy Colorado, I believe that had 4 hi (no 4 low) and auto. Like this truck the tires were horrible. I tried the 4 auto when we had 4-6" of snow. I didn't like it at all. Between the engagement, turning, and available traction , it was horrible. I was always a leave it in 2wd until available traction has been defeated, kind of cat. Then, and only then do you swap into 4 wdh. So, I'll probably never use 4wd auto. I'll use 2wd until I need 4wdh. /And then use that until I need 4wdl. I hope everyone is content.

To add to my comment below about the lack of reliability with General Motors and American cars in general, have you ever thought about doing a video that gives an explanation of why American brands are so unreliable compared to Asian counterparts? Your videos are exceptional and very detailed and I am seeing this type of video here and there on automotive review channels that explain this phenomenon.
@mripple
3 жыл бұрын
I feel this is a misnomer. My last Asian car was a Mazda Rx-8 with a rotary engine. While it was a super fun car to drive, there were massive reliability issues with the engine not to mention the horrible gas mileage. I am now on my 4th Chevy vehicle since then with over 300,000 miles combined. I have not had a single major issue with any of them. While there can be issues with any vehicle, if you look at the latest automotive reliability surveys, GM actually does quite well.
@NormandyFoye
3 жыл бұрын
@@mripple I agree the rotary engine was bad and discontinued for a reason, but that’s only 1 example from an otherwise superior manufacturer of reliable automobiles. And I’m always surprised to see Chevy trucks with Toyota-like high mileage, but I suspect their owners were meticulous with maintenance and probably didn’t “abuse” them beyond intended design. And many of those exceptions were fleet-maintained vehicles as well. I hope GM can maintain the type of upward trajectory that Asian manufacturers have maintained for many years. Unfortunately, it’s very long history of poor management and engineering mean it’s going to take some serious changes become a serious competitor in the market. The math doesn’t care either way.
