Just picked up the following and love it to the addition of my wreckoning. If you want only 1 bike that does a little of everything then yes go with the offering. But if you want a rip stick trail slayer addition to the park/ enduro big bro wreckoning then the following is the bike to get. Evils are not for everyone, but the ones that want to pop, jib and jump everything on the trail, that’s what this brand does. The bike climbs great..just pedal it and enjoy the ride!

Great bike for New England. Trails are tight/chunky and the climbs technical. The Delta really does a great job of smoothing out the chunk on the way down and finds endless traction on the way up. The HTA helps keep the bike nimble through tech sections and tight singletrack. I had the chance to ride the Tallboy and the Ripley. Tallboy traction was really good but took a bit more preplanning to put the front end exactly where you wanted it. The Ripley is amazing in every way though I do prefer both the SC and Evil on tech climbs due to the increase in traction (Ripley is more efficient on smoother climbs). I’m happy I bought the Following for 90% of the riding where I live.

I think you nailed it on your geometry comment...these bikes are great for us "tweeners". For me, at just over 6 ft with long arms, many size larges in other brands feel cramped. I had a Tallboy 4 and with 468mm reach on a Large it wasn't a great fit...moving to an XL frame would have been way too long of a wheelbase for this category of bike. The Evil fits me like a glove. Also...contrary to popular belief, you can build these decently light. My XT build with carbon hoops and a few parts upgrades is down to 28ish pounds.....not as crazy light as your Ripley :) but respectable for a trail bike.

I think this is a matter of opinion, but it seems to me the Ripley is for those that still want to keep a foot in the XC world and like that "firmer" feel. I thought I wanted a Ripley until I rode one. It didn't feel "deep" enough to me. Granted I'm coming from a Devinci Django which is very progressive and I have a v1 Ripmo, too. I run a 44 offset 140mm fork on mine and it doesn't feel twitchy at all. It has that deep feeling of the Django's split pivot but it doesn't bob and tightens up when you get after it. I can stand up and mash pedals and it just goes. Not a lot of bikes in this travel category can do that and still as feel "deep" or progressive as The Following is. For SLC/PC riding, it is just about damn near perfect. I built my own and it comes in about 28 lbs. I'm very happy.

I love my Following V3 and you can slacken HA out to 66.4 in the X-Low setting. My primary complaint is that the stack is too low... I know it is supposed to be more XC/racy but to fit me properly (I'm 6' 4" on an XL) I had to put on a ton of spacers then put on a longer stem - which also calmed down that twitchiness on the high-speed descents. I recently picked up a Devinci Django LTD which is also 120 but has a 150 fork, a 645 stack (vs. the 614 on the Evil) and 66.5 HA so will be fun to compare (once our trails finally begin to thaw and dry out here in Boise).

Geoff, I'll be interested to get your take on the Django. I had one before I bought my Following and I loved it. Pedaling is better on The Following especially if you stand up. I like my short travel bikes to have normal HTAs and not be too long for maneuverability and the Django fits in to that category. I really like short chain stays, too, and both of these bikes have that. Devinci makes great bikes. Enjoy!!
@BikeandSkiGeoff
2 жыл бұрын
@@dansburns Agreed... pedaling is better on the Following. For longer climbs I'm reaching for the shock lever on the Django. I have the Django LTD with the 150 fork and it doesn't match Devinci's geo numbers. In high setting fork is 66.0. In low setting Django was unwieldy and was more of straight-line plow that was difficult to maneuver - especially at speed (and especially for a 120 bike). Django does better in high setting and it does want to accelerate much faster once pointed downhill than the Following (seems I'm getting more PRs on the Django than I ever did on the Following). Django is more planted while Following is relatively much more poppy and playful - especially with DELTA link and shorter wheelbase. For longer trail rides with more climbing I prefer the Following. For shorter rides on flow trails I prefer the Django.
@dansburns
2 жыл бұрын
@@BikeandSkiGeoff I agree with your assessment. Devinci's just want to haul when you cut them loose. They started in DH and that DNA comes through. Django is much better in the high position. I ran mine with a 140mm fork and a -1.5 Works Components headset in the high position so it came in at 67. Sounds high by todays' standards but it was perfect for what the bike is.

Great bike.. I have had two of them (5"10 sized up to large) In my opinion, Evil need to lighten this frame up (its a brick) to separate its value proposition from the offering and tweak the front end to match that ridiculously stiff rear end. Balance that riding experience out. This said it is an Evil, it's always going to prioritize going down and over jumps than going up, it's part of their DNA. I am actually riding my current one with a 120 fork.

Great review. I enjoyed hearing your impressions. One big miss, IMO, though was that you did not mention, nor try apparently, the bike in its X-Low setting. As someone who owns this bike and has put in almost a year on it, I can tell you that the flip of the chip transforms this bike. The front end is more settled on the descents, but also on climbs. Jason, great review, as usual. Nice seeing you in the desert (I live in Las Vegas). The Rocky Mountain Element is a lot lighter than The Following. Did weight play a role in how the bikes felt different? The Following seems awfully heavy for a short travel bike. I was mostly talking about how it compares w the tallboy at 65.5 so 1 1/2 degrees, and it’s very noticeable.

Hi Jason, your gendered language is getting old, we have women and non-binary people in Boise who shred, so maybe try replacing "guys" with "peeps" or "shredders" or "bikers". Nearly every video in the part 'who this bike is for' you refer to "a guy looking for ...". I don't think you're making videos only for men, using more inclusive language will only broaden your appeal. Thanks! Josef in Boise
