True, I had an 07 Altima 3.5 cvt and I really miss that aspect about it, how it moves when you're already going like 40-50mph and step on the gas, an unspoken gem of the CVT. I'm now in a naturally aspirated Infiniti m35x but I miss that about my old Altima, really made driving it fun.

The maxima is one of my favorite “hidden gems” in the sport sedan segment. I had a 2018 as a loaner for a week and fell in love with the car. My family’s C300 Mercedes was having some warranty work done at the dealer and that is weirdly what they had left available. I was immediately impressed with the power, it’s honestly pretty fast! I lined up with my friends’ 06’ Charger RT (stock but mint and 80k miles) and it was a great race. 0-40 the Charger has the dig but past that the maxima started pulling and eventually gapping all the way to 130+. The CVT and VQ35 combo is great in the 30-110 range and will hang with cars you wouldn’t expect. My friend subsequently got an 09’ SV Sport (that year’s equivalent of the SR) and it turned out to be quite the little beast. Will easily keep up with any 5.7 300/Charger/Challenger and shames quite a lot of sporty cars. I somehow even managed to watch him edge out a GTO from a stop light race to 70 which was hilarious on the way to cars and coffee. The old one feels a little bit fast in that 30-100 range as it doesn’t fake shift and just holds it at 6800 rpm.

@@MeynMotorGroup definitely one of the most underrated cars on the market imo. Everyone just hates it for the CVT but usually hasn’t tried it. It really impressed me how responsive they’ve made them. Big update from the early 09’ CVT in my friend’s. However I do wish it were possible to force it to hold the revs besides doing a brake stand with traction off (the only way i know how with a new Nissan CVT have months of experience with loaners.) Really the CVT would be preferred in this car if it could take mods. That VQ35 has so much aftermarket and potential but the CVT will literally auto die with more than a few mods. It’s kinda stupid quick in the mean time.

I recently purchased a '20 Platinum after trading in my '17 base model Maxima. I agree with you, the performance of the CVT is really smooth, and even improved since the '17 model year. This car has its own community in Saudi Arabia, and it gained its fame since the mid-nineties when Nissan introduced this car with a six-cylinder engine, regular gear and front-wheel drive, the owners of this car were making modifications to it and many street races were held, which gave Nissan Maxima what its nickname in Saudi Arabia The "deathbed" due to the many accidents due to illegal racing and drifting at high speeds, the sixth generation "or the seventh in the USA" was disappointing, but this changed with the last generation of the Nissan Maxima, which came with a 300hp vq engine, which returned the Maxima - relatively - To what it was in the past, many people now drive this car at a speed of 260 or more on the open roads outside the cities, which gave it a new nickname, "the coffin". I own a 2022. A lot of reviews seem to suggest other options, but been happy with mine. And been very happy with Nissan in general, my 2022 Maxima is my third Nissan. The car is very comfortable. I love the heated steering wheel and seats. I have had no problems with the CVT, or my previous CVTs on two other cars. I love the looks, mine is maybe gun metal grey...my favorite color among the choices I had, but I had to pay a lot extra in 2022, to get ahold of one. Love the paddle shifters, you can shift down when going downhill, to minimize breaking. Handling is fine, but probably not quite as slick as my previous, Altima Coupe ( which is a smaller car though.) Interior trim with the orange "stitch" accent looks nice IMO. I really wish you could have XM radio at the same time as cell phone audio ( for some quiet background music while chatting with people.) No USB power when car is off, so you can't charge phone...wish they could change that. The overall user interface of the "infotainment" system is ok, not amazing. I don't sugges the in car GPS, it's clunky and seems stupid. If you have smart phone, use that, and you can use it through Android auto I think, which is helpful. Just use your phone to set your navigation, then see if you can connect to Android auto. Overall, after one year of ownership, quite happy.

I live in the middle of PHX and it feels like you are flying an aircraft on the freeways. the steering wheel has a flat bottom which when used correctly allows you to steer with surgical precision. It's almost like driving a crotch rocket when gripping the steering wheel at the bottom like handlebars. Once I realized it it blew my mind. It handles at high speeds shockingly well. Leased a mess of Max's since '93. My '19 Max is a satisfying car because of its power and ride. My wife owns a 2020 Versa and I call it a mini-max because of its safety features. Yes, the ride is different but buzzing around town is easy with the Versa. The Max SL has enough amenities and safety features to satisfy most drivers. I know about subtile features offered from other cars but you can go crazy comparing. The Max is solid, great power, well engineered transmission and a nice body design too.

Just saw your review one day after I bought my 2021 Maxima SR. It’s my 3rd Maxima since the 2016. My wife drives the 2019 S with a few added features, but I had to get this SR trim. Your review was great and pretty accurate. Except for one thing. You dogged the paddle shifters while in a neighborhood and you made a right turn. Said it didn’t have that snappy response. Bro, I took it up a windy mountain road, used the paddles, let the RPM’s at around 4k going from “2nd” to “3rd”, and holy shit! I’d touch the gas and was getting instant snappy response and grip around the turns. Jolted me back into my seat every time. Had a blast! You are correct on the down shifting though. But to say they’re useless was an exaggeration. Even on a straight away, leave it at 4k RPM’s in “2nd” or “3rd” and you’ll get that snappiness. Once again, great review except for the paddle shifter segment. I love my Maxima and hope they keep making them. And like everyone else on the planet feels except Nissan, they need an AWD on this bad boy. It could probably make mid to high 4’s in the 0-60 if they kept the power plant the same but AWD. I look forward to your next review

Great review, I’ve always liked the Max since my 94 “4 door sports sedan”. From the 95 redesign the Maxima lost its edge but this design a few years ago was a bit of a comeback. Good to hear the the CVT is not the problem many people feel it is.

Didn't like the comment about " you're buying it new, who cares about reliability". Reliability is precisely why people like or do not like a particular vehicle, especially in today's expensive market. The true test is not on a new vehicle. All "new vehicles" drive and handle well. It is 5 yrs or so down the line that the true test of its reliability shows whether faith in the vehicle is misplaced. But for what it's worth, the car looks great. Like the power it has; it is after all a fairly good sized vehicle in need of adequate power to pull it along without struggling.

The CVT was a mistake for a 300hp V6. It's fine on a Versa. I could render the CVT on my 17 Max useless and dead in 5 mins and do no damage to the engine. The CVT is the weak link in the Max.

Having worked at a Nissan dealer ship in sales. Nissan CVT is the worst. Might be better now but still not as reliable as the old auto transmission. I remember the dealer would get trucks full of transmission any program they would just replace the whole thing. So if you are under 3year/36k warranty you’re fine after that the cost comes out of your pocket.

JUST picked up the 2021 SR in Sundrift Chromaflair. LOVE IT! Get alot of looks in her. I had someone ask if I bought the "Concept Car" Maxima! Chose this over Lexus IS350 F-Sport, Cadillac ATS-V and HEMI Charger as I need to get TF away from speeding already. Time to chill and look good doint it at my age. FUN FACT: In order to use the paddles you have to TAP the shifter to the LEFT (shifter in Drive or "D") position and trans goes into MANUAL Mode. In that mode the transmission will NOT up/downshift. You have to use the paddles to upshift and downshift. Awesome for performance driving and adding additional transmission torque. 3rd gear is a BEEEEAAAST! Dropping to 3rd at 40-50mph and power is ON TAP! She's ready for warfare in 3rd! 4th gear is great for taking evasive action on hwy cruising (passing, etc.). PLUS the shifters are ON THE COLUMN, NOT THE WHEEL. Meaning you can downshift/ upshift coming into/ out of corners w/ ease! Up/downshift w Paddles is RIGHT-ON regardless of steering wheel location. My wife's 2020 Ford Fusion Titanium 2L Turbo AWD has the paddles on the steering wheel which is just incredibly awkward to upshift coming out of a corner as the steering wheel is in various positions. The paddles are the ultimate way of squeezing EVERY BIT of that 300HP from that 3.5L VQ35DE engine - ranked by many automotive magazines in 10 Best Engines. Per MotorTrend: "Nissan's big-bore VQ engine has found itself on almost every definitive best-engine list, and for good reason. Forged connecting rods, an updated variable valve timing layout, exceptionally flowing cylinder heads, and moly-coated pistons all lead to the VQ35DE's efficiency and potential. Follow in the footsteps of in-house Nissan tuning firm Nismo for a 300hp version without the aid of forced induction. There's also no shortage of available parts for this engine, which makes the path to modifying one relatively easy." If you're a "driver", you'll have ALOT of fun beating this engine up. The interior is hyper luxurious and comfy. Hard to find a balance of performance and luxury like this with any car. Verdict: LOVE IT!

Please automakers, don’t make your cvt transmissions fake a standard automatics shifts. Let the cvt be a cvt. My parents have a 2014 Honda Accord with the cvt, 120,000 miles, it does not fake shifts and is amazing. When a cvt fake shifts, it is actively damaging and putting more strain on itself. People need to learn to embrace the feel of a cvt, as they are actually pretty fun.

The new Pathfinder is amazing ditched the CVT which didn't look right for a big SUV. Sentra and Rogue are some good looking vehicles even the Versa seems Nissan is doing well with the new lineup agree with others people overlook Nissan like never exists but think with new lineup more people might pay attention lots of people talk trash about Nissan makes angry nor Toyota or Honda what they used to be Kia, Hyundai and Mazda all great cars their reliability has improved over the last years.

If you owned one of those current CVTs for a while, driving anything else just is a somewhat absurd experience. The speed, the level of refinedness, the fact that you never search for any gear ever, regardless of being in the mountains, offroad or in a towing situation...you really don't want to miss that. And if you pair that CVT with all wheel drive, chance are you will leave anyone but the strongest vehicles in the rear view mirror after a traffic light stop. I drive a LOT of cars and I have never experienced a start from standstill as I get to enjoy it now in my current drive. The way the CVT just slams the torque converter and then takes over and just rips you towards 40 miles...In all honesty I have had more vehicles in my rear view mirror after a start from standstill with a frkn trailer behind me than with any other car solo...

I have a 2013 Maxima SV Premium with almost every option available (they didn’t have the Platinum in 2013). It’s quiet, comfortable, and very fast. Have driven 750 miles in one day several times without fatigue - the front seats are perfect for me. Plus it handles better than softer sedans like Lexus ES350 and Toyota Avalon. The car has been bulletproof so far. One caveat - I only have 71,000 miles on it because I own several cars, so I can’t claim 150,000 or 200,000 miles experienced. But so far so good as I haven’t had ANY unscheduled repairs. Zero. I do have the CVT transmission fluid changed every 35,000 miles, so maybe that helps. Currently thinking about buying a new Maxima or a Lexus ES350 in order to continue with a non-turbo, robust V6. Wife has a Toyota Highlander so I don’t need another big vehicle. Frankly don’t like the looks of the current Maxima as well as mine - the current one has too many odd creases and swoops, but it’s OK.
