I feel you on this! When I turned 40 I was told it was the best decade when you were at your most confident. I’m more and more aware of how little I know and how little influence I actually have on the ebbs and flows of a complicated life. I hope that will be freeing enough for this decade to bring a sense of confidence and grace for both of us (and everyone).

I would love to see a series where you pick an item you've laid eyes upon recently (a piece of art, an outfit you saw on Instagram, a flower, something you own) that inspires you and you create a makeup look based on it. It's kinda like duping the vibes, but with a twist! I think it would be a cool way to use what you have in a new way.

It just makes so much sense too! Like I realized this year that I need to change my clothing budget for each season. I don't enjoy warm weather clothes (just don't find them interesting) so I spend almost no money on clothes from about April-September unless a staple item wears out. Fall and winter though? Sweaters and coats and pants and boots? That's my JAM and basically the only time of year I spend money on clothes. I'm super excited for the "seasons" approach!

I think what 2020 awakened in many of us is that we don’t get to decide the chapters of our lives. I often thought my life was organized by chapter - via the year. But what I learned this year is it’s not simple, some chapters are longer than others, some are shorter and being able to ebb and flow with that is strength. The pandemic didn’t end because the year did. Many of us are still existing in that chapter of our lives, some are in entirely new chapters of having children, moving, etc. I think it’s beautiful to understand your channels themes outside of the gregorian calendar year as well, like how you’re doing the 4 little seasonal chapters. And leaving room for the world to decide when it ends because she will whether we plan for it or not. In short, years as a time measurement feel arbitrary to me now and maybe you’re feeling the same way.

Can we convince a billionaire to buy a billboard in Times Square with this quote on it? "Here in the 21st century sometimes self-care means buying the lipstick. And sometimes it means resisting the urge to buy the lipstick. That is not as simple as it sounds. And it's also not as superficial as it sounds." YAS GIRL.

Emotional and energetic sustainability is critical for our functioning as humans. I think this sounds smart and healthy. I also think that frees you up from any limits or titles or boundaries. it's ok if this channel evolves as you evolve in this more emotionally and energetically sustainable way. I'm along for the ride and look forward to whatever you give your viewers. The last two years have been ones of tremendous growth for me (aka horrifically painful in the best way possible) and after 2020 I legit feel like everything prior to that was a past life that happened a long time ago in a galaxy far away. Watching your channel has been such a source of support for me when I need to remind myself I am not the only one trying to make sense of how the bits of life flow, conflict and dance in the most chaotically beautiful ways possible. Thank you for sharing your journey and looking forward to the continued evolution of your channel.

This project concept is extra interesting to me because it is closest to how my budget works as a student! Rare occasions (birthdays, holidays, etc) give my regular survival budget a boost where I can actually consider buying something new for once, but sticking to a specific number for a year would be so difficult to predict. Super exited to see what this brings!!

Hey Hannah - I used to watch you religiously but tapped out for a bit cos life got crazy. I'm tapping back in because I missed your content and I am so excited because I have so much to catch up on! I hope you are okay, I can't imagine how difficult it must be to have people analysing you so much and being so critical - and like you said, examining you under a microscope. The thing is, a little slide on a microscope is a portion of a greater whole, and when you examine people like this, you miss the bigger picture. It has been a very challenging year for all, including you who has gone through so much change and loss (including loss of a space of your own). You're allowed to be a bundle of contradictions and change your mind all the time (not saying this is what you do or don't do) but when people criticise others for doing this and being this, they are missing the point. It would be a huge loss to your viewers if you were to leave youtube (and of course you have to do this for yourself and not for the viewers but the point still stands). I was thinking about what I would do if I were in your position - and I am wondering if maybe you should disable comments on videos on days/weeks/months that you aren't in a position to emotionally process and expose yourself to the throwaway thoughts of others. People can have their opinion but you don't have to be exposed to it, particularly because most negative comments are impulsive and poorly thought out. I know that there are positive aspects to comment sections and its a way to engage with viewers, but perhaps those people could engage with you via alternate means. Sometimes self-preservation is more important
@kingcrimson1204

"Most negative comments are poorly thought out" OMG yes. They're the ones that stick out though, no matter how many positive comments precede and follow said comment 🤔❤️
@MoonlitSunflower

This may be a good idea. I think sometimes what was meant to be a positive comment can also be something that can be perceived negatively too. Like a back handed comment or constructive criticism. I have noticed while working that I am more likely to take written commentary negatively even if when someone said to me instead it wouldn't bother me.

PR almost sounds like receiving presents. Sometimes you get stuff you don’t need, sometimes it is stuff you wanted anyway, sometimes it is so close to what you want but not quite...and you’re still left with all of it regardless, so you have to figure out how to manage it...but normally present giving is only at certain times of year, so you can plan for it (we declutter old toys and stuff for my kids to make room as necessary before birthdays/Christmas) versus PR at all times of the year
@BelleStreetBoyz
3 жыл бұрын
Lol Maybe this why receiving PR has always sounded so unappealing to me. Gifting stresses me out so badly! I still have piles of gifts from the last two Christmases that I don't want but feel too guilty to get rid of, and I'm still stressing a week later about whether or not the gifts I gave this year were good enough. 😕 I seriously need to chill the fuck out! haha

I've personally never received PR that was really useful. Hair Products i never use, masks that I never use. Perfumes that I dont really like, lipstick colors that aren't my shade. It would be better if the company let's you pick out what you want.

I remember once Hannah said something like just because she got a free hair product doesn't mean she won't still want to buy the eyeliner she wanted. Yes, in some ways getting PR will alleviate the need to buy things. But overall it just means more stuff!

"My year of living" in change, with grace. Love this I remember watching Angelica when she was burnt out and deciding whether to stay or not and her saying I'm just going to do what I want, when I want and it seemed so freeing and energizing to her. I hope that you'll find the same in this year of living your life in a way that suits you and your needs. I have really appreciated your content (from no-buy to now) and it came at a time when I was just getting into this whole beauty KZitem viewing space and so much of what you've shared has really resonated as I've felt the urge to buy. I am absolutely not telling you what content to make, just to be clear. I'll end up watching pretty much everything you decide to release. That said, the videos you've done on market commentary, philosophy (makeup and shame was incredible stuff), and general relationship to stuff/consumerism and buying without overspending -- those have been THE best videos I watched in the past few years. I often find myself thinking about them, even months later. (That, and "fewer, nicer things" is like a mantra for me at the moment.) I remember you mentioning doing seasonal spending and will look forward to your thoughtful approach. One of the many aspects of your channel that I appreciate is that you are NOT a cookie cutter version of a beauty channel. I am also doing a seasonal budget for myself this year! I also have found that monthly budgeting gives me too much room to focus on wanting new things instead of appreciating what I have. Wanting new things has definitely become a way for me to look forward to something in the midst of the pandemic, and it's time for me to shift my relationship to my things. I love your content around duping the vibes, things you have that are better than things you want, overhead swatches, what's cheering you up and shopping your stash, so I am definitely looking forward to what this year will bring with your channel 😊

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this so much Hannah!!! I felt warm and fuzzy and snuggly and happy when I finished your video. I’ve been eagerly waiting for your new year vision for the channel and I am so happy with the freedom you’ve given yourself. (I wanted to wait until I could craft a more eloquent comment but I know myself and I’d never get back to it, so you’re stuck with the sleepy unpolished version of my thoughts). I could almost feel the weight of your hard last year as you endured it. Not that there was anything wrong at all with the content you produced or the videos you created, but just that it made my heart ache for you as I imagined how hard it would be to keep your life so exposed for the world as you experienced such loss and change last year. I’m so very grateful that you are getting some privacy back. Some space, some boundaries, some parts of yourself that are only meant for you to enjoy and share in your own time and in your own way. It feels like it has given you a renewed joy, as if you can give more freely out of your filled up place of abundance. And I’m so very excited to see and hear everything to have to say. The things you wrote down that you love to film are all the things I love to watch! Please, give us more of what you love and less of what feels like work for you. I want you to keep doing this too because it helps people like me who are much further behind you on the journey. So not that you need my permission to do what you want with your own channel but just to be a voice that works to balance out any negative energy you may have still weighing you down, I want to say how great this was. I want to encourage you and thank you for everything you have given us already, and for the hope of the upcoming year changes. Thank you.

I would love videos that share how you approach creating palettes, how you decide what palettes to de-pot, and how to do that without breaking/shattering the pots. You often reflect a set of values that I would like to better model in my own choices. I am excited for what's to come. Thanks for sharing.

My family and I have had so many conversations about ... 'who am I?' ... at the end of this year. My Dad and I have agreed that what feels truest to him, to me, is 'I'm beside myself.' There's the me who does the deeds, every day, takes care of essentials of the physical kind (laundry, cooking, etc.); then there's the me beside that me who can't comprehend what's happening around me and is tired of trying to integrate that, 'make it normal'. What's happening in American politics, EVEN STILL, is not normal. The pandemic, the separation from loved ones, is not normal. Being unemployed almost a year is not normal. I'm letting go of attempts to normalize what isn't normal, and that includes expectations of myself to 'continue on as if all is normal'. Thank you for always always opening this kind of complexity and honesty of conversation. It matters!

The four times a year is super smart and I think reflects how a lot of people buy but with the added no buy I think is even better because we all wander into places and buy little things. I've always said I do a big clothing buy once or twice a year after assess what I am missing in my wardrobe and whats changed in my life

I really really really like the sound of this upcoming content from you! It's exactly what I come to beauty tube for. It's a shame people don't get big clicks on those sorts of videos because they're my favourites! This is your story, you should enjoy telling it! And the themes which you talk about tell a much more well rounded story than only beauty or only finances- these are the themes of the modern world and the individual within it!

What I love about you is your ability to articulate your thoughts, processes and feelings about well, anything... To me that is true regardless of the subject. You might be talking about X and your commentary might trigger a thought to me about Y in my own life or help me process and think about something totally different in my life because it is really about examining our human nature. My life and makeup desires as a 53, SAHM in the Midwest couldn't be farther from yours. What is the same is the desire to examine, grow and strive for better understanding of ourselves. Grace is a great theme. Can't wait. P.S. I am still pining for some "Hannah reads poetry she loves" videos. Just sayin' 😊

I really like this for you Hannah - it does suit you “now” and you’ve been thinking about this format for a while. It suits you in the moment of your personal journey, as in the seasons bit, but i also think the re-assessing per season is a good thing to do. If anything 2020 taught us that anything can happen and that adaptability is a must. I am sure you can figure it all out and rebuild what you had pre-Covid (or something else?) over time. Maybe in 2021, maybe in 2022, but it’s a journey. Soon “budgeting”/“no buy” will become a second nature or just a less conscious decision you make. If that’s possible at all - you seem like a person that’s very conscious and on top of your thoughts and the thought process all the time. But what i really mean is.. it will get easier. When that happens i hope you will still make content of course 🤣 but i wish you all the best and a peace of mind, both in the process and after the achievement of getting where you want and need to be. ❤️ - PS: i wrote this somewhere in the middle of the video, right before the PR bit, and i’m so glad some of the bits i wrote about reflect some stuff you’re mentioning for yourself 😂

Loving all these ideas and thoughts ☺️ tbh you could talk about pretty much anything and I would be here for it... listening to your voice is the most relaxing thing for me. I just started my no buy year and I’m so excited and nervous at the same time. You totally inspire me and I’m so glad I discovered your channel in 2020.

I watched and liked this video yesterday, but had to come back and say, Thank you! I found your channel in 2020 and you have helped me rediscover my love of beautiful things and to realize that love of beauty can coexist with living my values and conscious consumerism. Thank you so much for that. Happy New Year, Hannah!

I'm not a religious person, but this song speaks to me. I like the idea of 'grace' being the thing that gets one through the dark times - inner grit, support of friends and family, etc. Happy New Year Hannah. :) Amazing grace! How sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; Was blind, but now I see. ’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed. Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come; ’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home.

I am all here for the year of Grace 🥂😂. But in all seriousness, after what it seems like 2020 has done to all of us emotionally, spiritually, and physically, a treating each other and ourselves with graciousness seems like just the ticket! I was also reflecting back as I was listening to this to the content during your no buy year that wasn’t check-in focused - in between those videos there was so much of the type of creative-type content you’re talking about (like the editorial blush draping tutorial! *chefs kiss*) and I think it will be really interesting and satisfying to come back to some of those themes & build on them this year. Very much looking forward to it! Happy New Year Hannah, Joe, Sadie, and everyone!

I think this is a really good idea. It allows for time to think about what holes/wants exist and how you could fill them, but also relieves the pressure of searching for a specific item until you reach the point where you can buy things. I am doing a no-buy this year and I have had to give myself hard limits saying okay, once I reach X savings goal I can pick a new goal. Otherwise my brain goes wild with all the down-the-road goals I have and I don't want to do anything anymore! Also, a note on check-ins - I've noticed that on the bookish side of KZitem a lot of folks have moved from monthly wrap-ups to a "recent reads" format. Basically when they've read enough books that they have a strong opinion about one way or the other, they make a video. I have found that I enjoy those videos much more because it seems like the creators enjoy them more and are more passionate about the content that's included. I hope 2021 is kind to you! Wishing you the best. :)

I like your thoughts about this year. I get so frustrated at people who are constantly ragging on you if you don’t do something 100% the way they *think* you should do it. I can only imagine how you feel about it. You really have put yourself under a microscope and especially your budget so I think you should most definitely give yourself a year of grace. You deserve it.
