I just bought mine 2021 Rav4 Prime - loaded XSE wrapped in Black. Let me know what questions you may have from an actual owner. I drive it 90+ miles a day. Few intial comments: It is a very nice handling SUV, has good power, and a great sound system. I already hate the lane assist (works sometimes), love the panoramic sunroof - and mine (after some miles) can get 42+ miles on a charge (enough for me to drive from Orange County to Rosemead). This is a solid buy - but mine was upwards of $60k with upgraded service warranties and being wrapped in satin black.

I have this 2021 Prime and can confirm it feels very quick from zero to 60, and also pretty quick from 60 to 100. The cruise control with lane assist makes LA traffic a breeze, and combined with the HOV sticker, it makes my Long Beach to El Segundo commute a breeze. I went with the XSE model with all the bells and whistles, premium sound, and full leather interior. By far the most fun car I have ever had. The 302 HP is really fun. It takes Dodge Chargers and Ford Mustangs off the line with no problem (except when they catch up at about 70mph, then the dodge charger or mustang drivers are irate that a tiny Toyota dominates off the line.) I can confirm that it is incredibly fun to drive. I tried to race my mom in her Tesla Model X in plaid mode, and I was left in the dust. So nowhere near as quick as a Tesla in Plaid/ludicrous mode, but can go much further on road trips; I can make it from LA to Marin County on a full tank without ever having to stop for gas ⛽️. Trail mode is also great for snow, and there is plenty of cargo space for 2 snowboards and all the needed gear. It should be noted that the fuel efficiency goes down a little when charging while driving, but it is a really great feature to have, but unfortunately can't charge the battery all the way to 100% (stops somewhere close to 95%). One final thing to note: I have had this a year, and after 100+ charges and discharges: my EV range went up from 42 miles to 50 miles in summer but can only get up to 45 miles in winter or cold weather charging. Overall, this car far exceeds my expectations 😮

Good review! At a few points you expressed surprise that the engine did not turn on while in EV mode. I'm almost certain that when the vehicle is in EV mode, as long as there is sufficient charge in the hybrid battery, the engine will not turn on, regardless of how hard you press the accelerator. By contrast, in "Auto EV/HV" mode, the engine will turn on in certain circumstances (e.g., hard acceleration).

Nice video, but three suggestions you may try them out, (atleast on my car they work) 1) Don't usea manual gears in sport mode, the CVT/PSD is way better avoiding gear change simulation.(sport, gear shifter in auto) 2)Put in Sport before you Stop. 3)When going down hill, move the shifter in to manual and select the first gear, the regeneration resistance will encrease and you can reduce and encrease the force with the brake paddle.

While the system does the work to get you there, let you enjoy nature and get back safe and sound. I see this being a great system with Jeep or Bronco. A "Base Camp" feature where people can charge their phone or laptop, but also save gas and have a cheaper version of AWD. Then using the car as a camper when the day is done.

This is an excellent test. At these low speeds, the engine cannot directly power the front wheels, so if electric can’t do it, gas cannot do it either. A good example of how a PHEV can fail at this is the Mitsubishi Outlander, when it is stuck in a very high traction situation, the EV drive will overload (probably battery current limit) that causes a momentary shutdown, and it cannot break free.

Useful review. Two observations: 1. Seems there is an LSD on the front which locks up with sufficient wheel spin. That’s a good thing off-road, but would have liked to see it lockup at less aggressive spin in order to avoid risking damaging axels and suspension components. It’s a Toyota, so probably can take the punishment anyway. 2. @19:20 looks like drive was cut from the suspended rear wheel, which would be a great feature of the electric motor if I am observing that correctly. Overall seems to be a genuinely capable soft-roader, but perhaps the price point is a bit high for what you are getting.

I've tested the shit out of my 2020 Onyx XT on the stock tires and it's conquered everything easily as long as I have the clearance. 8.7" I'm able to do what ever my friends 4runner and tacoma can do so long as clearance permits. The AWD system is really impressive with the dual X Mode.

The Hybrid mode, better n faster engine and the extremely good fuel economy makes this a good pick! But the AWD, Eyesight and nice interior of the Touring makes it for me on the Forester. Still soo goddamn hard to decide. ps as an audiophile would you like the HarmanKardon mode best or the Toyota JBL? ps the different off road modes on Forester still better? 0.78 vs 0.49 the Toyota has much better fuel economy.

That’s what turned me off the RAV4. I found it incredibly distracting while driving as it took up too much of my field of view.

I had this car earmarked as the replacement to our 2010 CR-V months and months ago... then covid came a f=+*ed everything. I know, I know first world problems and all that, people have died etc. and I’ve been very lucky so far not to have anyone near or dear get sick, touch wood.... but it’s soooo good and soooo nice I can’t help but feel a bit pissed off. Would’ve loved that car.

your idea of getting the XSE & set of 18"'s for all terrain tires is a great idea, if affordable for some---it made me then think winter tires could go on either the 18" 's , or even 19" winters on the stock wheels, though might be quite spendy winters in 19'.

It would really interesting to revisit these trails with All-Terrian tires on the Rav4 Prime. Those street tires aren't designed for anything other than asphalt.

This makes me want a 4Runner Prime so bad. With better fuel economy, the 4Runner would have no more downsides. 40 miles of EV range for around town and a hybrid making 30mpg during freeway trips would be awesome.

Ok. Another vehicle to consider for when my current SUV gets retired. I have a question. In your opinion, how did the Rav4 Prime do off road compared to the 2020 Subaru Outback? The Outback was my first choice, but the Rav4 Prime is making me consider it. With a good downpayment and the tax credit, I could get one cheaper than the Subaru. I wish to do dirt road and dirt trail driving (no need for me to get a Jeep...Im not driving any place that is that demanding), so off road and all wheel drive ability is important.

The RAV4 is good enough for light trails. The Outback can absolutely handle harder terrain. You can see the difference in this video and the Outback Onyx video we posted last week where it makes a similar climb.

@@drivingsports Thank you for the reply! If I were made of money, I would readily get a Gladiator with the EcoDiesel, but my educator's salary says otherwise. Besides, a Subaru is good enough for whatever I would need. Again, than you for your reply and input!

Firstly, great videos! The content, editing, audio, and yourself, all amazing! I wanted your opinion, not sure if I’m going with mid size or larger, 2 or 3 rows so if you had to choose (I’ve test driven all the following but want an outside opinion!) between a CX-5 or Rav4, what would you take? Otherwise, if I went larger, would you pick a Passport (awesome video on that!), Highlander, or Atlas? Appreciate the advice! Keep up the great reviews!

It's nice to see someone actually took the RAV4 Prime off road that's great I'm glad you did it the only thing I have to say here is , stop it with the Starbucks routine, I will not go to any Starbucks because they will spit into coffee a police or military if you don't believe me watch it on Fox News they will show a video of a Starbucks employee spitting in to a policeman's cup of coffee . Keep up the great work I love what you do especially you're the only one that is taken one of these primes off-road . Thank You .

This video is great! Yet also the argument for a Tacoma Prime! BTW They also put car/passenger tires on most Tacoma's including many "TRD" models. I have a TRD sport which is pretty much the hood scoop and stickers, but better looking wheels (IMO.) LOL ;) No descent control?! That probably means it doesn't have hill start/stop assist. I can't stand when they remove features/performance/etc. I had in a 2006 model! Another thing I USED to like about Toyota is that every Toyota felt the same regarding layout and button location. That last part was great, it made me laugh.

Why would you want more wheel spin if you're trying to go uphill? Does the traction control kick in sooner with trail mode off? I would think trail mode would be more for booting around flat gravel roads so the traction control doesn't kick in.
