Hi as already has been pointed out the strap is used instead of any hand holds. The strap will have been submitted by triumph as a hand hold feature as part of their Type Approval documents, then it will have been tested by the Type approval authority. This will have involved the strap being loaded to the regulation force to ensure that it meets the strength requirements. So it may well be something that you and others don't like it is not a mistake . The very reason why motorcycles have straps on their seats is for pillion hand holds, they are not some fashion accessory. You don't legally need grab handles but a manufacturer has to supply either a strap or a form of grab handle. hope this comment helps. I used to do this stuff for a living.

Just got mine a couple days ago, was instant love for me : D What a sexy, smooth bike! Its literally a sport bike with an upright riding position, LOVE IT! The slop in the throttle is perfect for how I ride, not sure why ppl complain. My only gripe is lack of anchor points on the frame and the short stubby shift/brake levers. The TCS/ABS are excellent and already saved me from sliding out on gravel. Amazing bike!
I just recently purchased a Trident with the white paint and it seriously helps with the "stubby" look of the front end (as does fitting the bar end mirrors). Personally, I think the looks of the bike are a decent mix of good and different. I went and test rode the Trident as soon as my local dealer got one in stock based purely on your First Ride Review. All of the good things you mentioned about the performance are spot on. Well balanced, quick and usable power for the street, and overall a pleasure to ride. I also agree with your assessment of the TFT display being very intuitive and easy to use. I will most likely spring for the quick shifter at my break in service (run in service) as it's a sporty little machine and would benefit from such an upgrade. Great content as usual sir. Keep it up.

Nice work on the video, as an owner of the trident I'd like to counter a few of your points. 1) I have also been disappointed with the amount of muck that gets thrown up at the rear. Wouldn't ever want to have a pillion on the back in wet weather. 2) my wife travels with me frequently (apart from when it's raining) on the trident and she has no problems with the seat size, but she is 5 foot nothing so that might explain it. She says the seat is comfortable and has never felt like she might fall off. The lack of handles doesn't bother her as she always holds onto me which is a safer way to drive with a pillion in my opinion. 3) agreed that touring may be a problem but it's not a touring bike. 4) luggage mounting is also an issue but I'm sure work arounds will come available in time. 5) personally I love the stubby rear and overall design, especially considering the price, is excellent. I love the look and think it's great Triumph have finally made an affordable bike.

It was a toss up between Trident and Cb650r ,after watching your reviews on both I decided the Triumph , both great bikes, but the CB was a little to modern / Normal looking. I loved that the Trident looked different to the other offerings. Yes the rear plate hanger is not my fave part of the bike( don't see it when I'm riding it) and yes in the rain she does get mucked up pretty bad. I took my 17yr old ,5'9" son as pillion a few rides he said he felt more comfortable on it than my previous Xv950r, I don't have grab handles. But if your going to carry pillions regularly I'm sure you'd look at a totally different machine. Each to their own but the Trident is a joy to ride and live with👍

The failure to understand the usefulness of the Trident's pillion belies the pangs of middle age. If you bought this bike when you were in your 20's you'd gush at the brilliance of this design. No hand rails to grab onto only means the passenger has to hug the driver. The only complaint here migjt be that the brakes aren't powerful enough to have your passenger's chest press onto your back for extended periods. The back end is like an unfinished symphony just like most modern bikes. Style over function doesn’t work for me. I would never buy a bike that couldn’t carry a pillion and have a decent rear fender. The big gap at the back between the seat and wheel is hideous. Why try to make a road bike look like a race bike. Probably to satisfy the young crazies and boost sales. That’s my opinion anyway. I picked up mine on Saturday and clocked nearly 100 miles on it. A bit chilly in the 'Merica midwest so the heated grips (optional) were great. I set them on low and medium and never needed them to be any higher. I wear an Icon leather glove. I won't be taking a pillion so those rear pegs are coming off. I hit them with the back of my boot (size 10.5 US) a few times so they need to go. Dirt on da tail....I can see where that is going to be an issue so I am going to place a piece of vinyl under the rear cowl to help with cleaning. I wonder if someone will make a fender extender to further help with directing da crud away? Love the riding position. I mean...LOVE it! So comfortable. Looks....this is a tough one because I do like the rear end, gas tank and handle bars. Front end, you are correct Sir, much too stubby. The bike would.look so much better if it was longer with an increased front rake but that would.mess with the upright riding position. Still on break in mode so I can't ring her out yet. I just love dat sound of the triple. LUV it! It purrs during acceleration and sounds like a peach. What a wonderful motor. My last Triumph was a 1970 Bonneville. I am an older dude! 1:05 - it doesn't work very well? What do you think it's designed to do? It's designed to stop the bike kicking things up at vehicles BEHIND it, it's not a mud guard to protect the bike itself. But imagine it was in the usual spot under the seat, it's not protecting the bike there either. If you want a massive hugger buy one, but a naked bike is never going to be protected from dirt. Either don't ride when it's dirty or deal with it. It's not great from a touring perspective because it's a little urban roadster. You can't criticise something for not being what it's not trying to be. And you're completely wrong about the looks, it's a gorgeous bike.

Enjoyed your video as usual bonnie lad but having covered 2500 miles on my trident 660 in the 2 months of my ownership and over £9500 lighter with optional extras and aftermarket add on’s I agree with you to a certain extent. Yes it throws up muck, but I note none on your back. Most bikes would be in the same state given the road conditions and the time of year. My “peeves” are clutch lever not adjustable and you’d have to have hands like a gorilla to reach. Aftermarket clutch and brake levers supplied (TEC bike parts) and fitted. Seat is very uncomfortable after 2 hours of riding (aftermarket and customised gel seat sourced at £245 plus postage) and will chase it up once I’ve completed the NC 500 next week, setting out 17 May. No triumph or aftermarket hard luggage available yet but various companies including Givi working on this. Until then a Oxford 70 litre waterproof bag Rok-strapped to the pillion seat and footpegs will have to do. I’ve had a trial run and very secure. Screen sourced and should get that in June. My main peeve is Triumphs inability to supply the optional extras I paid for in advance. Inexcusable really and no reason given. Not happy with Triumph but over the moon with Triumph Newcastle, absolutely fantastic service start to finish. What people need to remember is that in its basic form the Trident 660 is a commuter, first big bike, or weekend fun bike (and by god it’s fun) and at £7200 is a bargain considering the technology that comes with it. As I intend to do quite a bit of touring do I regret not getting the Tiger 900 c/w hard luggage? Yes and no. Yes it would have been more suitable to my needs “but” the aftermarket parts for the Trident will come, hopefully this year and in time to tour Eire (and visit the daughter and family in Galway) and I’ll be a happy puppy

Lack of spray suppression on the rear of naked bikes generally is an issue, we ride them in all weathers and its not just the bike that gets filthy, it's that line of mud up the back of your expensive riding jacket. You make some valid points, particularly regarding the lack of pillion capacity. I quite like the looks of the bike, having seen one in the flesh at my nearest showroom, although the rear end looks a bit truncated. Sadly Triumph seem to have gone down the BMW route of making a lot of quite basic fitments, such as grab handles, and centre stands etc, into expensive add-on accessories, which is a shame because it makes the advertised price of certain models a bit meaningless.

Three main things about the Trident that I don’t like is the cheap looking welds on the exhaust can, the cheap mismatched bolts on the back of the instrument cluster. They could’ve at least used black ones to match and lastly the very cheap feeling switch gear none of those feel up to Triumph standards even with a bike being built on a budget. As these improvements would hardly cost an arm and leg. You could also place the seating material in the cheap bucket as it doesn’t feel like it will last.

The Triumph was £7300 without any extras, the SV was a bargain £5800, that’s a big difference, plus Suzuki was giving a 3 year warranty. Is the SV a better bike? Probably not. Will I notice the difference on the daily grind? Probably not

As you say Andy, looks are subjective. I’ve got one in Matt black and love it! Much more fun than my CBR500R I traded in for it. No desire to carry a pillion - my Mrs is 5’10” haha. I’ve therefore removed the pillion pegs and added a Held tailback. No problem carrying a lock and room for a burger and chips although they might get squashed. Won’t be touring on it but for a weekend blast and a fair weather commute (laptop in rucksack) it’s perfect. Glad I don’t ride in the rain although you can purchase a hugger extender from Powerbronze I think

Mmmm..Mr Flyer, I find myself agreeing totally with you...I have the new 2021 Honda 650R, and the same can be said for that bike too...no real accommodation for a back rider bar the stock footpegs. It's clear to me that this is meant as single rider bike...with the odd track day in mind. There's no way I'd sit perched up high, no solid hand hold as a pillion...both the Triumph and Honda have short chassis, so mud & crud will always ruin the rear end looks....the Honda does have solid chassis-welded hand-holds though. It seems to me, that this segment has somehow mixed up it's target customer. As an over 60 yrs person of shorter stature, I like the 'compact' design of all the bikes in this segmant..but I think the very short rear-end chassis and long tailpiece is well...bad design...so much cleaning to do after every ride, ha ha!!

Kreiga dry bags fit fine on the back. I don't carry pillions but I got the grab handles put on in any case as thought it looks better with them on and again aid in using ROK straps if needing to carry something. I agree the bike does get dirty easy, not just the rear but it amazes me how much the front forks attract muck, even on dry days!

I was at Triumph in York last week and saw one of these for the first time in the flesh. I quite like the styling and if I was a new pass or returning rider then I’d definitely be in the market for the Trident. Not a big bike though for taller riders and I agree with your description of being a bit stubby, although that may appeal to others and the price seems reasonable.

I always like when you mention storage. I really think you should include the burger test you mentioned in another video. If you can fit a burger and fries under the seat. Another good review in the books. Everything you brought up about the pillion seat can applied to every naked bike for sale. Some had grab rails but many did not. The front rake of the forks was pretty much the same among the all the naked bikes. I think the ones from the Europe appear to have a little more rake. Though in pictures the Trident's rake looks the same as the speed triple and street triple. My observations were all made looking at the pictures on all the manufactures web sites. Many times perception can change when the bike is viewed live. As always looking forward to the next video.

I'm thinking of replacing my 4 year old 390Duke this year and this as well as a street triple are on my list. I went in Fowlers last week and had a look at one. My thoughts are colours make a difference. The all black one with big triumph logo looks best. It looks very small though except for the over sized rad that is. That number plate hanger spraying muck all over the place is pretty poor though. I looked back at your Duke 390 test and you didn't find much fault so maybe I should just stick with what I've got. It still puts a smile on my face when I ride it. I just fancied a change and something a bit bigger.

As usual, a very fair assessment. I’m lucky that I have no intention of taking a pillion so will remove the rear pegs and I actually like (most of) the looks of the bike, mainly not a fan of the number plate mounting, with the indicators being so low down, so may have to change that. I find that too many modern bikes look like transformers to me with all their weird angular shapes everywhere. Not looking forward to having to clean it every five minutes though due to the lack of a proper mudguard.

I'm glad somebody else shares my opinion on the look of the bike. Here is what I think is going on. Triumph makes retro bikes and they also make cutting edge sports bikes. This bike is entry-level and they don't know if the prospective buyer is going to be tempted by a retro look or a sporty look, so they put a foot in both camps so to speak. The other thing that might be going on here, is, as a 66 year-old man riding a Bandit 650, I know there is such a thing as good enough. The Trident might be good enough for a fellow to buy and keep for fifteen or twenty years as a weekend fun bike, or a commuter bike. Triumph wants to give the Trident buyer a good reason to upgrade after a year or so to a Bonneville or a Street Triple, and the bike is styled accordingly. It is a pretty nice bike, and if I were so inclined it would be a nice upgrade from my Bandit.

A couple of extra inches on the length of the pillion seat and a proper rear mudguard would largely address your first two issues. Triumph have just followed the current (and, in my opinion, unpleasant) trend of shortening the back end of the bike to make it look ‘modern’. Hence the need to fit that awful rear number plate hanger.

Ive owned mine a little over a month now. Anyone who has negative comments about the pillion grab strap has clearly never used one. I have years of experience using these both as a pillion and as a rider taking a pillion and I would have to say that the strap is preferable to grab handles in both situations. As a pillion - gripping with one hand - it is more comfortable under acceleration /deceleration just straight arming and letting the strap take the weight rather than having to push yourself forward on grab handles (pulling back on de-cel) is way less fatigue-ing. As a rider pillions using grab handles feel more rigid and cumbersome always having to fight against them whereas with the strap there’s more of a fluidity in movement, it just feels more natural - to me at least. The best thing by far is that your pillion has one hand free which can be placed on the riders back when decelerating (unexpectedly when some twerp pulls out on you) and avoiding the inevitable smack of the pillions helmet against yours, and it’s just more intimate.

Very good points about the Grab rails and the design of the rear. They should have at least extended the tyre hugger so that the dirt is kept at bay. That said, we can get the dimensions and fabricate a luggage holder which can go Into the grab rail mounting which can potentially solve the touring side. Cheers

I think your pointing out a few irritations is a good move. When someone looks at a bike excitement can cloud the objectivity. The muck up the back is not unique to the Trident but this new idea of a trailing rear fender (whatever it might be called) is a bit of a gimmick I reckon. The seat does need making practical if you have a pillion in mind, some guys hate the idea. For me a seat should do what it's supposed to, I ride almost exclusively now two up and had to buy a comfort seat for my MT10, old backsides need all the help etc. My son is looking to buy a bike and needs occasional pillion comfort. Maybe an option to supply two different seats would help buyers. As for passenger holds, we use an Oxford body strap with two handles, five pound thinner girdle for me! Some laugh at it but it does solve the problem of giving the bike heaps as my missus is secure. Far from trendy but hey! Anyway MF, thanks for the nit picking!

Looks horrendous just like the Katana from Suzuki and the lack of any points to secure something old school like a cargo net restricts strapping small luggage to the rear seat. I would also mention the poor rear brake pedal. Where the hall Triumph found this God knows. Surely this could be improved. Keep safe, Old Bloke.
