2021 YZ250F first ride impressions: Big Power! The updated engine feels stronger everywhere and pulls longer on top. The latest "Hard Hitting" map for the '21 engine quickens up the throttle response a little more and feels good on loamy dirt. This '21 engine has such strong partial throttle and mid range roll on response for a 250F and the throttle response is 2-stroke quick and snappy. The muffler is new and still very loud and the extra holes in the air box cover make the intake noise even more noticeable.
The chassis is responsive to inputs with a firmer suspension setting compared to the 20 YZ250F's I've ridden (clickers were set in the as delivered setting). There is less chassis pitching under braking or accelerating compared to the 20 YZ250F. The suspension is still loosening up so this may change a little but it feels like there is more low speed damping - this bike feels firm. I am 6' 2" tall and weigh 190 lbs and off the showroom floor there was 30mm of free sag and 100mm of rider sag with me.
The handlebars came in the forward position - which does bring the rider forward on the bike and also makes getting to the compression clickers on the forks difficult. Brakes felt controllable with good power. Clutch pull is smooth and light. Pro Taper bars are stock and so is a gold colored drive chain. This bike is BLUE! The blue number plates really stand out...so much blue! I really like the Yamaha Tuner phone app - easy to set up and load maps and change between Map 1 and Map 2 on the fly. Also easy to keep track of maintenance on the app.
From the first ride on the '21 YZ250F:
Engine is noticeably stronger everywhere (especially up top), suspension is firmer with less chassis pitch, and it still makes lots of noise from the intake and exhaust.
Looking forward to more rides on the 21 YZ250F soon!
