Your Maverick videos are peerless, and truly packed with solid technical information! Do you see a way to service the "non-serviceable" trans fluid?
@TDTVGarage
2 жыл бұрын
The transmission does not use fluid like a traditional automatic. There are no bands, friction clutches, or hydraulics. Therefore it does not need to be serviced any differently than you might with a manual gearbox - like a change every 100k or more miles if that.

These should be very similar and even better than he 2nd gen Fusion and escape hybrids which are legendary, taxi companies used escapes getting put up for auction still running with 400 and 600k miles. I have a 2018 ford cmax that has the previous generation hf35 ecvt transmission and have changed the transmission fluid. It uses the mercon lv fluid and is just a drain and refill setup. I would assume the hf45 would be the same. There is no internal filter or flushingrequired.

The eCVT trans IS serviceable. CVTs do not have dipsticks. Similar to a manual transmission they have a plug under the trans to drain & another plug up high to fill & check for level. Best Practices is to change this oil every 30K if you want to get long life from it. !

Great stuff here, Sam! Thank you! At roughly 2:02, when you start talking about the catalytic converter, could you speak a little bit more about that specifically? I'm not sure if you've seen, but there have been some reports on KZitem and on some Maverick-specific forums where folks with hybrids see a bright-red glowing catalytic converter when using remote start (especially in cold weather with the temp set relatively high). Have you guys been able to replicate that in your testing? Could it be intentionally designed that way to capture the exhaust heat for warming the cabin? Any thoughts about the red glow? It'd be great if y'all might be willing to investigate and/or do a video about it.

It seems like there may be a few vehicles with this problem due to the software in the PCM. Ford communicated internally to their dealers that their engineers are working on a software update, hoping to release it in March. This doesn't seem to affect every hybrid and is not an official recall at this point, but it does look like a fix is coming. It could end up being a recall to get the update installed. "Some 2022 Maverick and 2020-2022 Escape vehicles equipped with a 2.5L full hybrid electric vehicle (FHEV) powertrain may exhibit an idle surge and/or rough idle with high temperature in the catalytic convertor and sulfur odor in the cab. This may be due to the software installed in the powertrain control module (PCM).This condition does not affect vehicle durability and no additional diagnosis or service is required for this condition at this time. Inform customers that they can continue to drive the vehicle and engineering is currently developing a software update that is expected in the last week of March 2022. Once the softwareupdate is available, contact the customer and schedule a follow-up appointment for repair."

Everyone has an opinion on it. Our first oil change was at 13k miles and it said we could have gone to 16k. It was fine, the oil was not a wasteland at all. Hybrid engines only run 50-60% of the miles. With synthetic oil the old fashioned wives tale of "change your oil ever 3-5k miles" is long gone.

I would like to know if combustion engine is resleevable, or is there "repair" piston kits like say on Toyota, with slightly bigger diameter to match the wear, and overall how much thousand miles can it hold up until engine repairs, and is it costly engine, repairable etc. Mb you would consider such video one day, thx!)
@TDTVGarage
2 жыл бұрын
It's really kind of a non-issue. By the time and engine wears to the point anything like liners or new pistons would be necessary the cost of doing such a job would likely be well more than the vehicle is worth. Hybrid's like this typically run 400-500,000 miles before engines start to wear to a point they are not working well because on a hybrid the engine is turned off half the time. At that mileage, the rest of the car would be barely worth the effort of even replacing an engine. And not we would not consider doing a video like that as we would have to wait around for a vehicle to wear out. We test new ones.

So all 4 sparkplugs are accessible from the top? Thats cool.. no need to remove half of the engine to change the sparkplugs.. where is the catalyc converter located? Or should i ask, how easy to steal it? I like to wash my car , including the engine but with that high voltage under the hood ill be very affraid to throw water in there. Is it safe to wash the engine with water pressure? What kind of belt does the maverick hybrid use? How easy is to change the water pump?

Converter is just behind the engine. Generally cleaning the engine is safe, but high pressure sprayers are always a concern even with standard engines. There is no belt and no belt driven water pump.

How is cabin heat done? Is it strictly through radiator temp?

The Maverick computer tells you when it's time. Owners manual talks of a 10k mile interval range that can go up to 15k miles depending on usage metrics. As of today ours has 12.5k miles and still has 25% oil life left. The engine runs half the time vs miles, doesn't need to be changed nearly as often as a conventional car.
