This one has been a long time coming. The Gibson Dove and the Gibson SJ-200 are two of the most famous names in Gibson lore.
The SJ-200 comes in as the older sibling to the Dove. Debuting in the 1930s, the SJ-200 has been around for almost 100 years. It has changed woods a few times, but the modern iteration of the SJ-200 Standard carries a Spruce top with a Maple back and sides. And it is a powerhouse of a guitar. Countless artists have turned to the "Super Jumbo" body shape to fill out their sound.
The Dove comes in looking just as it did when it debuted in 1962. Gibson had debuted the Hummingbird in 1960, which was it's first "square shoulder" dreadnought guitar. The Dove came in looking similar, but carrying a 25.5" scale length, which gave it a distinct sound and feel compared to it's Hummingbird brother. And it came built with a Spruce top and Maple back and sides, which gave it a visual character all it's own.
So, which one wears the woods better? The big SJ or the square shoulder Dove? Check out the video and let us know which one you would prefer.
Enjoy!
