Back to Back ride comparison on a short old school GP track with my 2022 Honda CRF250R and a 2021 Gas Gas EX250F. The '22 CRF250R is my favorite 250F and sets the bar for "Fun to Ride" 4-stroke with an almost 125 2-stroke like lightweight feel and agility and amazing cornering. Can the '21 Gas Gas EX250F knock of my favorite 250F? Red vs Red!
From a lap time point of view - yes! I did a 2:01 lap on the Gas Gas EX250F and a 2:02.6 lap on the CRF250R so the Gas Gas wins by a 1.6 second margin.
From a power point of view - The CRF has a more fun engine with good low to mid power and lively mid to top power with quicker turn over and very little engine braking. The Gas Gas engine feels a little softer down low to mid, revs more slowly with less urgency, and pulls very strong up top (just takes a while to get there). Slight advantage to the CRF (mostly due to quicker throttle response)
From a weight feel point of view the CRF feels a little lighter in motion compared to the Gas Gas. Advantage CRF.
From a handling point of view. Both bikes have excellent cornering and generally decent stability at speed. For cornering I give the slight edge to the CRF. From a chassis compliance point of view the Gas Gas wins with much better bump absorption and while the CRF has a globally firm overall feel that helps with precise and sharp handling and also gives a lot of track bump feel through the footpegs and headset area. The Gas Gas WP suspension setting gives a more settled and planted feel and works better on this dry and hard pack track. The CRF needs a re-valve for this kind of GNCC style riding. Advantage Gas Gas
Bottom Line:
The '22 CRF250R is a very fun to ride combination of Power/Weight/Handling in a 250F dirt bike with a great engine, excellent cornering, and a too firm suspension setting (mostly the fork). I've ridden a 22 CRR250R with TBT Racing Ohio re-valve and it works much better with a more plush and planted feel on the hard pack chop.
The Gas Gas surprised me. Sometimes a little softer more compliant suspension setting and chassis can make for a quicker lap time and still be fun to ride...Get on the Gas!
