I own a 2013 Sportage Diesel 6 speed auto and must say it has far exceeded my expectations. I see 7.8 litres per 100 k's in a range of small city and country driving in Tassie. I did add a throttle position controller which made a huge improvement to responsiveness. Its a car I have recommended to others. I would imagine the 2021 Diesel would be a great buy.

We bought the new Tucson Highlander with the same engine and gearbox.. my initial thoughts of the gearbox were same as yours, great when up and running, but very jerky on start and around town. Had its 1500k check up during the week, and a software upgrade, which has transformed the gear change. It’s much much smoother now. Hyundai have recalibrated the gear change as far as I can tell. Much happier.

Just got our GT-line 1.6T and I have to say that it is really impressive. As far as the DSG goes, we are used to driving VW with DSG’s and I do not understand his comments about the gearbox we find it copes with most driving without an issue. I have only got it to be indecisive once and that was by when turn at an intersection I floored it and it took the DSG a couple a second to get into the right gear. When I took that same corner and just accelerated normally the change was seamless and instantaneous. Like every DSG I have driven, if it needs to change down multiple gears, like go from 5th to 2nd, it does take longer that an automatic however normal changes are so smooth that unless you look at the tachometer or shift indicator you will not know that it has happened. We originally ordered the diesel however when the dealer informed us that delivery would be Q4 2022 and that they had a Red 1.6T due late Jan we decided we would go with that on basis that it was subject to a test drive. We found it not quite a punchy as the diesel but still quite adequate for our needs. It was quieter which only highlighted the only issue we have found even more and that is tyre noise. We live in the country so most of the roads are crushed rock which generally create tyre noise with most tyres. Will be interesting to see how noisy they are on bitumen. BTW the tyres are Hankook which based on reviews are rated as quiet. They can come with Nexen which are supposed to be. quite noisy.

I'm currently deciding between Rav4 Hybrid and the Sportage SX+ 1.6l DCT( Cant justify the extra $6k to go to GT). With your turning the corner gear change lag, would that delay have been eliminated if you had used the paddle shifters to drop a gear or two at the first sign of gearbox hesitation or would it still lag even with paddle shifters overriding the auto gear selection? I'm currently driving a 2015 Mazda 3 SP25 and find that 2 quick flicks of paddle shifters drop the gears quick enough that there's no obvious hesitation when I feel like driving it more aggressively and I can flick the paddles whilst in full auto mode ( don't have to move shift knob to M mode) and they over ride the auto selected gear temporarily and then reverts back to auto mode soon after. Does the Sportage paddles also override when in normal drive mode or do you need to select it before using paddles?

The DCT will shift slower when you're in the 'normal' drive mode. DCTs are not epicyclic automatics, so don't drive them like one; if you need to overtake, flick a paddleshift, or just don't be impatient, expecting a family SUV to drive like a Porsche. Fix the driver, not one of the best transmissions ever fitted to a mainstream passenger vehicle which saves you 6% in fuel over a regular auto (which you did praise for its 5.0L/100km consumption).

He showed us the base model and took us out the back where they had the other models (that other people had ordered and already sold) and showed us them. He asked if we wanted petrol or diesel. At that point in time I said that I didn’t care either way so for the test drive we took the base model diesel. When we got back he asked us if we wanted to drive the petrol and I said not a chance. Hi Paul good review. I was looking at the RAV 4 hybrid initially, but after much research I decided to go for the Kia Sportage GT Diesel as it just kicks the RAV 4 in every department maybe except fuel economy. In saying that the Diesel model is very economic to run also and over a 10 year period you may save $4K with the RAV on fuel, however I am not going to have to change the batteries for probably 10K in 10 years time (5K now) so in terms of economics there is no difference and Kia maybe even more economic over the long term. Probably now Toyota will have to lift their game in a quality interior with some decent tech and some decent LED lights.

Thanks for the review Paul. We were waiting for your review before making a call on this. Ordered one for the family. Here in NZ they have marketed the models as LX, LX+ and Deluxe. You reckon they correspond to S, SX, and SX+? Dealers here have very little info on all models apart from the GT line and the base model

The fog lights look like an afterthought on the new model. I have the 2017 Sportage and found the headlights on the older Sportage do not seem bright enough. Hope to get a new Sportage next year 🙂

how do you rate it against Outlander 2022? I am surprised a few reviewers reviewed Kia Sportage better than Outlander 2022. The Exterior looks weird... but well, it is subjective and there is no sync among Kia cars as other manufacture cars e.g. we recognize VW, Merc, Mazda, BWM, Mitsubishi and other cars easily because they have company's design touch, whereas Kia, their every other car is different from each other.

Main issue is that the mitsubishi is sharing the same platform as nissan/renault who neither their engines nor their CVTs are reliable as the kia/hyundai family. Pricing is overall similar I believe, at least for the basic trim level in australia

Great review Paul. For me, hands down one of the best looking vehicles made. Only sticking point for me is I need to tow 2,500kg. Do you have any thoughts on increasing towing (legally, getting it reclassified etc) or look elsewhere?

I wound't tow 2,5t with the Sportage. I would say you need to go for a dual cab ute or platform.

If you're doing heavy towing, it's necessary to have a large heavy vehicle designed for this purpose. Otherwise the tail will shake the dog.

12.2m turning circle is massive for an SUV that size. Maybe it could be some sort of typo in the specifications by Kia? Or maybe Kia's measuring method is different from other brands? 12.2m is just as massive as some utes.

Hi, you were quite quick to say the transmission was not very good... Now... was that in normal driving mode? how were the other modes in terms of pace and acceleration? You said to stick to old technology with torque converter transmissions... These are important points for some of us who are actually looking to purchase these vehicles and it doesnt help when you brush through those points. Please expand on that. thanks.

@@EastWood2004 There's a Subaru Club here in WA and the Forester outperforms a lot of more serious offroaders for beach and other off-road activities. The engine is a better than people think... and with dedicated off-road modes the Forester is a real alternative to the big and more costly SUVs.

Great review Paul. What is your view on the 2.0 Diesel driving short trips. I read that the DPF filter needs a 30-40min run at least every 2 weeks?? I have a 1.6T GTline on order only because we do mostly short suburban driving, however thinking we should switch to diesel??

Stick with the Petrol one . It's really good experience driving it. You will get used to throttle response fairly soon . Also some of the reviews take into consideration high acceleration which rarely happens in city driving .

We went direct to the dealer (Toowong Kia in Brisbane) and manage to get an SX in a few weeks - because they had a few vehicles already coming over on the boat. The price was exactly what is quoted as on the website (Paul's price here doesn't include on-road costs). We had to compromise on colour, because the car was already made, but honestly that's not the worst thing in the world.

Awesome review Paul. Do the back seats have a heated function? What colour code were you driving please? Also, if you had a choice between this in diesel or the Sorento GT Line in diesel which would you buy 🤔 regardless of price. Both fit my family well. People are scaring me from buying the Skoda Kodiaq RS 2022. Only because they claim that all European cars in Australia are not reliable and repairs are wayyy too expensive. Hmm I wonder if that's the case. Thanks Paul

@@ranimbill9331 I hear Mazda has road noise issues , I looked at Skoda all road wagon but has gone up in price by near 20K used to be mid 50K not 77K which is too rich for Skoda.... perhaps the Kodiaq has a more reasonable price tag and up to date tech ? Have to have a good look, but the Hyundai Tuscon is a lot of car for 55K I have tested the 1.6 petrol Tuscon and the 2.0 Kia in petrol and diesel , SPortage too noisy with diesel and the Sorento 2.2 diesel is too jerky with the engine but quieter than Sportage Think I like the Kia in 1.6 and the GT would be my pref but have to test the Skoda as its new Let me know if you have tested the Skoda

@@donaldd6365 Not yet tested the Skoda. But, I have friends who own skodas and the feeling is like that of an Audi. The suspension, road noise, it's a massive difference to Kia and Hyundai who drive well on smooth roads but wow, if you drive them over normal streets, you'll hear them bang over any uneven surface. Skoda is driveway 75K top spec Kodiaq RS. And has more tech than you know. Check it out on KZitem. It's expensive but so is the Sorento GT line, Same price. The CX9 has road noise? Hi, I've literally watched like 30 videos in the last few days as I'm looking for an SUV now. My budget is max. of $50 000. I would normally go for Skoda Kodiaq RS but $70 000 is just too much. What would you recommend Paul? There are some decent cars like Hyundai Tucson or new Kia Sportage or even Haval. Now Chery came back with OMODA 5 which unfortunately has no 5-star ANCAP yet but it's really cheap. But the boot is too little. I need to fit 2 big suitcases. I'm looking for a petrol car. Don't like diesel. I've gone through all comments and videos + your car reports on Car Expert but I would like to hear your personal recommendation. If you could give me 3 top cars in this range I appreciate it. Thanks David
