Sounds like a good idea. Perhaps next time, when we keep our wits about ourselves. Our local Washington laws are laid out in RCW 77.15.740. In (1)(d) the laws requires boaters to "disengage the transmission" within 300 yards. It would be good for the various stickers and posters to add that part. I have read in some places to "disengage the engine". I am not sure what that means. I interpret it as not turning your propeller and it just simplifies (1)(d). BUT, I agree that turning the engine off might be good if it can be done safely and the operator can stay off the rocks, other vessels, etc. The physics of a sonar clearly interfere with echo-location of fish. No idea if engine noise bothers the whales. I am going to read up more on "best practices" that go beyond the minimum described by the laws.
