Can you expand upon this concept of "renting" a car from a manufacturer for review purposes? I mean, it seems sort of self-explanatory, but it's something I've never heard of in all my years of consuming automotive media. Press events, loaners, and of course CR buying their own cars, I'm familiar with. Never renting though. Do other media outlets do this as well? What are the advantages/disadvantages to renting a car from a manufacturer for review? Why/when do you rent? Is it for a specific editorial demand? PS really looking forward to compare/contrast reviews of the new BRZ/86 twins!

I think maybe it's just to avoid any conflict of interest and something they have to do to satisfy their status as never taking any advertising money. If they pay a rental fee to evaluate a car, they can't be said to have taken anything for free from a manufacturer. I really think that's probably why, but I'm no expert and I didn't explain it very well.

My understanding is so no one can say, sure, you gave it a great review because they loaned it to you for free. If they pay for the rental, they aren't beholden in any way to the manufacturer and can be objective.

I’m always confused when you guy's say you ‘Rented' you’re cars from manufacturers. The normal person could not do this so I’m assuming these cars are in perfect shape and have been gone over by the manufacturer before releasing it to you, being in the best reviewing shape. How does this differ from if a manufacturer that gives a dozen press people a car for the week to review without renting it to them?
@toronado455

To the best of my knowledge, CR doesn't formulate any of their final scores based on any of the cars they rent from manufacturers. Those are just for first impressions, and sometimes they mention the rental if it had a different drivetrain from the one they purchased, but that's just for reference. They aren't including their experiences in the rental cars in the final scoring as far as I know.

It’s the same but Cr does not accept any benefits from manufacturers such as those press cars and flights to and from events to stay impartial. Those rented cars are only used a first take and not used for the actual review.

Our world certainly need more RWD or AWD cars with good performance, without a million technology features that'll raise the price and lower reliability! Keep it simple, less is more!

CR is correct, Super Cruise does not use LIDAR - but it does rely on GM’s lidar-mapped database. Ultra Cruise will implement full LIDAR which should be interesting. The Subaru BRZ and the Toyota 86 are the last small, cheap pocket rockets you can buy. If you want something more there are plenty of choices, but for the price and what you get it is unique. The Mazda Miata comes the closest as a competitor but it is not the same.

It isn't. The idea behind it is that on long road trips/drives, the system will allow to do it and get a break. Doesn't mean that it's a self driving car like they're saying.

I've worked from home for a decade now primarily because my typical 2 hour round trip commute was getting very tiring for me - especially when it was dark or the weather was bad. I can see scenarios where a rested observer of automated driving will soon be safer than a manual driver. I've hit a deer when I was only going 20 mph because it came up out of the deep ditch at work. I've nearly gotten into accidents on the expressway with people coming up from behind and cutting me off - that alone is probably a good reason to go beyond hands off and take away the driving wheel and accelerator from some drivers.

LIDAR, so I though you guys messed up the acronym and was going to post a correction, but I looked it up first just to make sure. Nope, according to Wikipedia and other sites you are correct. Which this acronym seems strange to me. Looked up RADAR to and that last three letters are the same. The reason it seems strange to me is I remember in USMC avionics school they taught that RADAR stood for RAdio Direction and Range. Maybe I'm remembering wrong though. Have a good weekend!

Which cars are easiest to have some oversteer fun with at sensible speeds? I'm looking at the MX5, GR86 and 981 Boxster S, M4/M2. Are Porsche too grippy and balanced to have any fun in? I prefer a car that's a bit of a challenge to tame rather than something boring which could drive itself. I can't say i'm not tempted by the exotic looks of Caymans, Emira, C8 and Supra. And that sound of a flat 6 or z06. Sound really matters to me - makes it so much more exciting and I don't mean all of the pop and bang nonsense.

HI QUINCE, LINK, AND JAKE, GOOD SHOW!! UNFORTUNATELY, I've never driven a car like the BRZ, or the StingRay, because a) I could NEVER AFFORD one, b) I'm a BIG GUY, with size 16 shoes ( so much for heal+toe clutch slipping, EH?? ) but, as a former Volunteer Firefighter, I could drive our double-clutch MACK C.F. ( C.F. stands for "Cab Forward" as opposed to the "Convetional" truck with a big hood in front ) FIRE TRUCK NO PROBLEM!! So, I'm actually more interested in the Slime Green PIERCE-ARROW former fire truck tanker you drive by in the BRZ ( at LEAST the car was Fire Engine Red!! ) did you buy that retired from the WATERFORD FIRE DEPARTMENT?? THANKS GUYS!!! CHAS ORVIS, PLAINVILLE, CT.

What's the point of driving a car if you aren't driving it? Take an Uber or a Lyft, then you don't even have to look at the road.
@Buc_Stops_Here

I think the point is if you are paying attention because of GM's system won't let you ignore the road, it is very difficult to crash the car since it will stop if you don't pay attention. There is virtually no risk which is why you don't hear of GM having accidents, but you do hear of Tesla have a lot of accidents.

So, these clowns spend the first part of the video dreaming of the day when people won't be allowed to drive independently. Dreaming of all cars being interconnected with a network controlling them. Then the second half the video lamenting that there won't be small fun rear-wheel drive sports cars. Like the BRZ and GR86. Dorks or in service to P.C. masters, is the question.

Consumer Reports recommends to never buy a new car within their first 5 years of a new model/refresh because more often than not, it will take years for manufacturers to hammer out unexpected engineering gremlins 😉 It even happens to the best of the most reliable car brands like Toyota-Lexus, Honda-Acura, Mazda, and Subaru.

Not the first 5 years. That would be the entire model cycle for most cars! They only caution against it for the first year after a full redesign.
