I'm the original owner of a 2004 Toyota 4Runner Sport Edition with the 4.7-liter V8. I've been driving it every day for 17 years, and I still love it. My best advice to anyone thinking of getting a 4Runner: Be sure to get all the options and the color you want because you're likely to be driving it for decades.

We just got one too! My genius dad though traded our Tesla model S cause he thought there was something wrong with it. He got a Volvo xc40 recharge and that turned out to be shit ( it drove 200 km then needed a recharge). We ended trading that for a brand new 2022 4runner. Amazing car but it hurts to drive it ( what with the gas prices and everything).

There will be a redesign possibly for 2023, but truthfully, they do not need one to sell this vehicle. As it is now, every 4Runner is sold before it gets to the lot. For all the complainers about this "old" design and technology, they need to remember who is buying this vehicle. White males between the ages of 40 and 65 are the primary purchasers of new 4Runners. In that demographic, reliability is the #1 factor in choosing a vehicle. Bells, whistles and redesigns are secondary or even a non issue. This age group also considers resale value, but likely drives cars into the ground before they trade or sell. For this demographic, the 4Runner is a gift from God. They get their leather, sun roof (they refuse to call it a moon roof), and a lot of storage space. They get an off road vehicle, but are unlikely to drive it off road. They prefer the "tried and true" design, technology, engine and suspension, rather than the newest, latest, and greatest "UNTESTED" things. The only disappointment to them is the gas mileage, but they will live with it. If we were in the 1960's or 1970's, this would be a discussion about Cadillacs.
@CRHK88

100%, good comment, your reasoning is why I got one last July. Luckily I got my special order in in time to get a Gray Nightshade before pricing went crazy. I was coming out of a Subaru Ascent Touring, and it was down to the Telluride or the 4Runner. I really wanted old school, bullet proof, limited bells and whistles, etc. I drove the Telluride (SX Prestige) and didn't t like it near as much as I thought I would. I love the 4R, love the "ancient" drivetrain too. My wife has an MDX Advance which she loves, but she said the other day the 4Runner is her favorite vehicle so far. It's just honest and basic, but seems "bulletproof" like that's the one we will want to drive if there is a zombie apocalypse. lol Would have preferred the TRD Pro, but it didn't have parking sensors. Yes, that was a deal breaker for the wife. Also love seeing that it was actually made in Japan and no less from the same plant that rolls out the Land Cruiser. Also, I am right in the targeted demographic you mentioned. lol

4Runner for the 4WD (2 speed transfer case), limited slip differential, heavy duty construction, reliability, resale value, and good looks. There is no road or trail that can beat it up. 2015 LTD, Nautical Blue Metallic, 155k miles. Drives as he described and just the same as it did when I drove it off the lot. Surprisingly quiet on the highway, tight steering, and the JBL system is pretty stout for being stock. Only issues have been the doorlock actuators (on my 3rd driver side, and my second passenger side. Passenger side hasnt worked in a while and driver side is intermittent.) I also replaced the A/C fan motor, but that was an easy DIY. And it would be tough to find any blemishes on the leather seats. Fully plan on getting to at least 300k.

I have a’14 4Runner limited. Interesting that you praise the x-reas system. I too love the performance. But my shocks leaked at 50k. And that’s with no off roading or abuse. Fortunately I had the platinum extended warranty. The cost to replace the struts was over $4000. Maybe my situation was a fluke. But it’s something to consider. Ie, if you have the x-reas system, the extended warranty might be an attractive option.

Had to put a rebuilt engine in it at 161,000 miles, it got hot and cracked the block I was told. Transmission had to be rebuilt twice. Finally got rid of it at just over 300,000 miles. Now I have a 2014 4Runner, I think it's a trail edition with 4wd, crawl control, rear locker, ATrac. Have just over 113,000 miles on it.
