Today we rode a 280 trip to White Sands National Park (formerly National Monument) near Alamogordo, NM.
We planned the trip a week ago but this morning it was raining and overcast, so we cancelled the trip. Then about 10:30 it cleared off while we were on our morning 1.75 mile walk with the dogs. When we got home we decided to give it a try and see if it would stay clear. We got on the road about 1.5 hours later than we had originally planned so about 11:30 we hit the road. The weather stayed clear and sunny all day and got up to 81 degrees at White Sands. We rode the freeway (Interstate 10) to Las Cruces, had lunch, then hit HWY 70 toward Alamogordo and stopped at White Sands for a quick tour. After the trip through the park we rode the 13 miles into Alamogordo and fueled up. I was running 75-97 mph on the highway so my mileage dropped from my usual 64 mpg to 53 mpg. Mary’s fuel dropped from 35 to 33 mpg. High speed doesn’t affect a big engine as much as a small engine running very high RPMs (11,800 at 97 mph, 9000 at 75 mph). We stopped in Las Cruces on the way home at the motorcycle shop where I bought my new Versys X 300 last week. I put my 600 miles on it in a week and changed the oil and filter and lubed the chain to get ready for this trip. I now have almost 900 miles on it. Very comfortable bike to ride long-distance. It really makes me want to get back into long trips, something I’ve not wanted to do on any bike I’ve had since my 2001 Goldwing. It rides like my old Kawasaki KLR 650 with the same look and feel, but with a Ninja engine it’s like riding a Ninja sport bike but with a comfortable body. That screaming engine is a lot of fun. It will cruise at 90 mph all day long without breaking a sweat. And that engine is smooth as butter.
