This is probably the best “top” list of figs I’ve seen on KZitem. It’s to the point and has video to demonstrate the pros and cons of the variety.

❤ Excellent explanation about different fig’s quality. Like to hear more about the shape of fig’s fruit. Round. Long and large figs.

My best first year tree actually two of them, Maltese Beauty and Yellow Long Neck. Both produced over a dozen large tasty figs. The yellow being the biggest weighing in at 97 grams the rest of the yellow in the 70 gram range. Yellow was in a 7 gal pot and grew almost 5 feet with two branches. Maltese grow about 3 feet produced 3 branches one that I air layered and sold.

For this season I used only Alaska fish fertilizer and I applied it about every two weeks. For coming season I will use more fertilizer.

That giant California tree look like a tissue culture I bought on Amazon. I purchased it as a VDB and a year it was not. They were fairly large for a second season tree. I am an administrator on Pennsylvania Fig Growers if you join our group I can show you images. Almost no neck, yellow when ripe with an amber color inside. The first one felt ripe but had no taste. So I let the other sit until I saw sugar spots and it felt like jelly. Wow one of my best tasting. I just call it unknown yellow aka Mike’s Yellow.

Have you tried Angelito or Calderona? These varieties seem to be getting a lot of buzz on KZitem. Nice summary and info on your figs. I'm just starting out with fig trees this past August, so it's interesting to hear about all the varieties.

If you don’t mind about the price, I think they’re great variety. I personally will choose white Madeira #1 over Angelito. I tried to root Calderona but no success. I do have Calderona de Miner but not fruit for me yet. Good for you on starting growing your own figs, but I recommend you don’t go crazy on too many plants. Thanks

@@khmergreen thanks, good to know. I'm hoping these more exotic varieties come done in price over time. I'm starting with 10 trees in container: VdB, RdB, Petite Negri, LSU Purple, Smith, Paradiso Genova, I-258, Black Madeira KK, CDD Blanc, Adriatic JH. Mostly from cuttings I'm rooting now or small potted rooted cuttings from local growers and inexpensively priced ($5-$10). I was lucky and got one Smith fig already😊

@3moirai they will go done in price sooner or later. You got very good collection there and manageable amount of tree. Very good 👍. What is your growing zone?

@@khmergreen I'm going to grow these in zone 9B, Rio Grande Valley in South Texas. Relatively arid here in the summer with common 100°+ temps June-August. So I'm hoping for a long growing season. I'm considering 30-40 % shade cloth & drip irrigation during those summer months.

@3moirai . Many great varieties out there usually there are mid to late season ripening. You should take a look at Col de Dame family of fig( CdD Blanc, Noire, Rimada, Roja, Gegantina…) They are among the best. Also many of Monserrat Pon varieties like Bordisot Negra Rimada, Del Sen Juame Gran, Tia Panya to just name a few. You have long growing season so you shouldn’t have much problem choosing the varieties. On top of that, you can grow them in ground. For hot summer, I have no comment on that since up here in New York, we don’t get that hot. Good luck with your growing.
