They had to exploit the deaths of her Father & Grandmother! It was disgusting! Is NBC gonna do this in Paris? Have a whole B roll about their deaths? Hire the same company that messed up the mental focus of Mikaela Shiffern Nathan Chen & Simone? “Her father was her biggest fan & he died. So she faltered on the biggest stage of her life.” It pisses me off so much.

@@duchessofdissent5728 This is why I don't like NBC. Yeah Tim knows his stuff but the commentary they give is annoying, especially when they keep bringing up the gymnasts' private lives. Bringing up the death of someone's dad and grandmother like that is wrong. It was already annoying how they kept bringing up morgan being from china, suni's dad's accident, and simone's parents being her grandparents (which is why I think they got rid of Al) and they still haven't learned. Just commentate on the gymnasts' performance, not their privacy and give them space

It's interesting to hear Tim and Nastia favor bringing back the 10.0 system. I don't miss the many years of difficult routines losing to easier ones because of a few extra steps here and there. And Nastia herself benefited from a gigantic (and deserved) D score on bars compared to most of her competitors. I'm not in favor of the scoring system being so complicated that it eludes even the most devoted viewers, and I can't stand that a perfectly executed routine can have two points of deductions, but I am fully in favor of difficulty level factoring into the score.

There has to be a middle ground. I've watched gymnastics since Shawn Johnson's former coach, Liang Chow, was still in the Chinese national team (before he got injured, which prompted him to later ditch China to come to Iowa, to start his gym there, to nurture Johnson to the Silver, behind Nastia herself)... and the fact that the folks in Gymnastics have never been able to come up with a system like most other elite sports so a casual viewer could immediately understand what's going on, in terms of scoring at least... that's just ridiculous. For most viewers, knowledgeable and casual alike, to immediately appreciate what's going on, a "10" system is ideal. You simply have to tabulate the various degrees of difficulty into that 10-point metric... so that an average gymnast with average scores, established over many years of competition of her career.... all of a sudden doesn't nail 9.9 to 10 on every apparatus, as compare to Simone Biles, when Biles literally could do things that athlete is not physically or mentally capable of doing! Again, 10-point system taking into accounts the various difficulties should NOT be that hard to come up with... especially if actual Gold Medal winners are part of the architecture of such a system. Don't just pick one or two former elite athlete or Olympians, because then they'd have biases; pick a good sample of former great gymnasts from different countries and backgrounds and skills or specialties, so a CONSENSUS or compromise could be designed. Just because someone haven't gone to the Olympics or having won a gold medal, it doesn't mean they suck; it could be that they got injured in their very prime years and were not able to continue with elite gymnastics.... which, again, WAS THE CASE with Shawn Johnson's coach, Liang Chow.... Assemble a team of 5-8 world class gymnasts, with a few world class coaches and a few sporting officials who spend their whole lives trying to understand how sports impact the bodies and mind --- so that, for example, gifted 14 - 17 year-old teenage girls, who are still growing, aren't put in physical danger from some exceptionally dangerous acrobats, etc --- & a 10-point system could be worked out...

@@kiabtoomlauj6249 I agree that there was something marketable, engaging, and relatable in the 10 system. If they went back to the 10.0 system, I wish they would use the whole spectrum, instead of cramming in all of the relatively "hit" routines between 9.6 and 10.0. What is the point of having all the other numbers? The only time someone would get between a zero and a 6 was if a fluke incident occurred, they got injured and didn't finish. It was even worse in the early 90s. Watching those events today, sometimes 15 athletes range from only 9.825 to 10.0. If they did go back to 10 system, they would still have to update the code to keep up with the latest innovation so that nobody loses out when doing something comparably difficult. Tatiana Lysenko's DTY in 1992... for example. One of my issues with the current code is that intention doesn't translate to result. In previous years, scoring was inconsistent. By making the code as strict as it is, covering every detail, the intention is to make scoring more fair so that routines genuinely done better are rewarded accordingly and biases toward big names or certain body types or whatever are eliminated. However, when you look at the execution scores being given today, the difference between the best and the worst is still very minimal, which basically takes us to where we were in the 90s.

The first Winter Cup or really the first competition after the Olympics is never going to be the best competition and it shouldn't be. It's the competition that lets your best juniors get the experience they need. That said, I really felt a lot of these athletes were trying out for college teams rather than trying to show how they'd fit on the American team with international competitions. I thought beam was strong. It's by far the best apparatus. Yes, they need to clean it up a little, and upping some difficulty in dismounts. I liked the mounts for most of the girls this time, especially the one that looked like Dominic Mucianoes (I know I spelt it wrong) mount from the '96 games. Vault is the weakest event for almost everyone we saw. I know we've had a decade of exceptional vaulting and we need to reset. Floor has good tumbling, but I feel the trend in international judging is leaning towards the artistry of the dance and leaps. I think they need to focus on some more of the dance. Bars I'm mixed on. I'm so glad Emjae didn't get hurt when she fell. I screamed. I know some of the alternates and some of the world team who are doing NCAA want to do US Championship and Nationals, so we'll see how that goes.

I don't mind the Difficulty/Execution scoring system because it awards difficulty while also keeping execution at the forefront. I always compar this to figure skating where they really don't have the balance of difficulty vs execution. If you do footwork for a quad and fall is better than landing a triple cleanly. We're also seeing the limitations with the 10.0 system in NCAA gymnastics with all the Elites in the system at the moment. For example, Jades Vault is only valued at a 10.0 when it really should be a 10.5 because of its difficulty. They need to increase the value of a lot of other skills and stop devaluing vaults. The mounts onto beam and near the beam skills need to be higher in value. I am glad that doing 2 wolf turns is not allowed anymore. I like the wolf turn when it's done well, but having 2 in a row is like "Okay, can we move on?"

I really enjoy this particular meat because we get to review the future candidates with the Olympics and in my honest opinion. I think the level of difficulties that these girls do on these apparatuses or more difficult than they do at the Collegiate level.

well, many stayed in elite that would have left in 2019 or 2020 due to the up coming olympics, i think jade could have been on the 2018? Oregon state team as a freshmen; but delayed for a chance at the olympics. I would say that normally it's about 6-8 elites per season that normally go for ncaa, but also, with new NIL rules in ncaa you can do college gym and elite if you choose. Making it more likely that even more elites end up on college teams.
