inpsiring work as always Nathan! Out of curiosity, how many variations do you typically record? and how many of those make it out of the edit? I'm making an effort to record more but I'm getting bogged down editing everything which is much less fun! Thanks

I typically record 8 to12 of each action (and keep the best 4-8, for example 4-8 short, 4-8 medium, 4-8 Long).

I guess it's not obvious but recording is often only about 10-20 percent of the work to have usable sound in a sound database ready for an editor or sound designer. So in general if you record for ~2-3 minutes, you'll want to have about ~2-3 hours to completely have those sounds (cleaned/edited/metadata) in a database ready for use (depending on the recording). The only way that works for me is to keep recordings to short sessions (ambs are diffrent).

@@NathanSmithSound Thanks Nathan, that's really helpful info! Some of my sessions in the past have been like 30 minutes exploring a prop which is great to practise getting interesting sounds, but having to sort through, edit, categorise, meta data etc that much material just isn't efficient. If I'm honest, it has been making me put off recording as much. Short sessions only for me from now on I think!

@@RedSpark_ yep, I often explore or practice to find the main actions I want to cover before I hit record, and sometimes will leave the time after that to explore live with the chance I might not keep much of it. It's a hard balance, that is for sure.

0:34 oh so that is how you get those ringout sword sounds from movies. you use two machetes. I tried that with a cleaver and knife but it produces a different ringout than the one you have.

yep, machetes are often what we hear in movies, when we think we're hearing swords 😂 😂

Hi Nathan, once these sounds are recorded what do you do with them?
@NathanSmithSound

After recording, everything is cleaned, edited, organized, and embedded with metadata in Soundminer (sound effects database software). Each clip in my videos often represent about 4 minutes of recording.

@@NathanSmithSound do you ever cut out takes or do you keep the file as the original 4min~ recording? Just curious as I do similar recording sessions
@NathanSmithSound
Жыл бұрын
@@jochisfx I always cut them into small searchable parts for the most the time, for example if a thing opens and closes, I edit out the best 4-8 opens and the best 4-8 closes in a back to back string/file. It also depends on the thing your recording of course. If I keep a recording edited into one file that has multiple actions, I will often notate it as a "sequence" (in the case where it's of value to the full performance)

It's kinda of real, or a real prop for display, but It's not sharp.
