I have a struggling learner in math - we use Christian Light Education - it's HEAVY spiral and the new lesson for the day is short and easy for her to understand on her own. She's also in 7th grade, but she's using CLE 500 this year. It has helped us TREMENDOUSLY! (My daughter has a diagnosed math learning disability, which may be the same for your daughter. I noticed my daughter couldn't retain info, and we were doing the same math over and over, year after year. That led me to have her tested.)

I think the good and the beautiful is heavy spiral also. I think my daughter doesn’t focus and her mind wanders…..yesterday it took her nearly 3 hours to complete her lesson bc she gets so distracted and literally sits in fromt of her book just NOT doing it. That’s why I wonder if it’s really a learning issue, or just she’s not concentrating and trying to learn it. (She does have ADHD). She won’t concentrate unless somebody makes her (sits with her, re teaches….threatens grounding…😉) it’s exhausting.

@@OurHOMEschoolPlan my 7th grade daughter sounds so similar to yours! I wonder if there's so math retention problems for her as she has a hard time memorizing the steps in multi-digit multiplication and division problems, down to basic addition facts. Sometimes she's on it, other times she's not. Here's an interesting thing, I had purchased Principles of Mathematics from Master Books to use with my older daughter last year (8th grade then), but she didn't appreciate it/didn't connect, whatever. She is now enjoying Shormann math, thanks to you! But, as my younger daughter, the now 7th grader, grew tired - for what reason I'm not sure - of using TGTB math level 4, I asked her if we should take a look at the Principles of Mathematics book from Master Books that her older sister didn't use. She said yes and we've been using it. I do have to sit with her for a lot of it, but she says she likes it because it feels like it has more real life application. Maybe. What I really think got her attention is that the cover of Principals of Mathematics says it's "Junior High". My girl was feeling so down on herself for being in a level 4 book at age 12, even though I assured her that the "level" doesn't matter. She is far more motivated to do her math now and even tries to offer math help to her 10 year old brother, when the opportunity arises. She now wants to move ahead, even if she's not quite good at the concept yet. We're only on chapter 5, about 25% of the way through this book, but her attitude is SO much better. I'm nervous about moving forward and the struggles that she may face, but I think I'll just have to review and give extra practice at times. The lessons are short, which is helpful. Sometimes the verbiage is too tedious, IMO, but I just skip or give her more practical application stuff. I do still have her practice TGTB multiplication songs with her brother, which she sometimes hates, but that's life. Prayers for you, me, and for the other parents raising kids in this transitional stage, as we work at loving and homeschooling them. The Lord is with us and prayer is powerful. Stay steadfast. Also, I so appreciate your Godly wisdom that you share! As you talked about your high schooler in this video, I was like, "yep, she's so right!" Why am I rushing, pushing, and trying to fit this mold that we so needed to get away from in the first place! (Public - government funded - education). 😜

@@MichelleL83 ❤️❤️❤️that’s interesting that your daughter is motivated now thinking the math is higher level. It’s like it gave her a boost of confidence she needed! I talked to my husband this morning, after sitting with my daughter for 2 HOURS merely reviewing her last math lesson and the things she missed (sigh)…we can’t go on like this. So I talked with him about the “learn math fast” program. Many have suggested it to me. So I may try that. Tuesday I sat with her for 3 hours, today 2….it’s crazy how the time goes by reviewing these things and I’m going crazy… So thank you for your perspective. It helps to know others have similar issues and have found solutions. And I do appreciate that you enjoy the videos! I just want to be a blessing and encourage you other homeschoolers in the faith. I wanted to encourage you in regard to your read alouds. The fact that you are reading aloud to your kids is amazing, even if it takes some time to get through the books. This is our 13th year homeschooling and I homeschool 9 kids, ages 6-17. Only 5 are my children. Anyhow, I’ve always been a read-aloud mom, but I struggle in other areas that seem to come naturally to you and other friends. We enjoy the Vanderbeekers books, but we enjoy them even more on audiobook!! What I’ve found works best for me is to read the super easy and fun and short books aloud and listen to longer books and more difficult books on audio! “The Year of Miss Agnes” is a great, short, easy, fun, and interesting book to read aloud as a mom. The Little House series is AMAZING with Cherry Jones on audio, but harder to read aloud because of all of the detail. Listening to a professional narrator read some of these books has also helped me become better at reading aloud and it helps my kids enjoy books more too!! I do still read aloud to them, but it can be fun to all listen together and we can all be working on something quiet while we listen. We can also listen if we are all in the van together.

This video is great! It came out just when I needed it! This is how I know that God is encouraging me. I have a 13 year old daughter.... The struggle is real. I have cried more this year than any year because of my struggles with my daughter. She's a good kid and she has a good heart, but my oh my.... The attitude is fierce at times. She is so resistant to homeschool because she has friends who go to public school and they always tell her how glorious public school is. This makes homeschooling her difficult. She does her work, thankfully, and I do see her enjoying what she is learning at moments. I should mention that the past two weeks have been really good though. I definitely see growth and maturity peeking through, but on those days that she decides to spew fire on why she is homeschooled, it's no fun for sure. She is also unmotivated and that's hard too. Teens go through that unmotivated stage where they think they should not have to do anything that wasn't their idea first and it took me forever to see that. I was just expecting maturity and I had been totally upset about her changing (this is my first time having a teen so I am totally new to this whole teenager thing)😐 Talk about a huge learning curve. My husband and I know that we've been led to homeschool our children. It's so difficult to explain this but this is exactly where I know God wants us, even with all the struggles. My heart just overflows with joy about homeschooling even though it has been so incredibly difficult for me, especially this year with my daughter transforming into a teenager. God must be working because after all of the struggles we have had you would think I would have given up a long time ago. It seems so crazy at times though, I'm weary. I love my children and they drive me crazy most days, but God is shining so bright and he has allowed me to see that. That is definitely enough for me to see that this is a miracle. Anyways, you are definitely an encourager. Thank you for taking the time to lift the rest of us up! I hope you can see that you are a great homeschool momma too.

Thank you so much!!! The transition into a teen is a REAL adjustment and it DOES take you by surprise!! I keep squeezing my 9 year old saying, “stay sweet!! Don’t ever change!” 😁 And yes…..tired!!! It’s downright exhausting some days. The mental energy it takes to keep after or deal with the resistance….it takes a lot out of you some days. But as you alluded to…it bonds you also. Unlike if they were being sent away, and maybe they’d be busy with activities and friends, and then homework, and it might not be “in our face” as much….we might’ve otherwise missed the opportunities to deal with it head on and LOVE them anyway. Teens test you…what can they get away with? How much will you put up with? And can they blame you? But we get to teach them what grace is. Grace is giving something they don’t deserve. We get to teach them about mercy. NOT getting something they do deserve. There seems to be a plethora of these types of lessons going on. And when in doubt….if I’m feeling worn down, emotional, frustrated, at my wits end….when I’m doubt, I hug and I tell them I love them. It’s a very different parenting world with teens. And there may be teens who are amazingly easy, very little change in personality from with their adolescence….but that ain’t my kids. Both of my teens changed around 12 years old. My son became more distant (bc he didn’t need a mommy to cuddle him anymore….) and my daughter became more dramatic, openly opinionated, and un -motivated. It’s not the same for every kid, but expect a challenging change, indeed! 😉 That’s was a long response! 😜

It's all about finding what motivates them. Also, Level 4 TGTB is a BEAST of a course. It's a lot of work for 9-10 year old kids.

Don’t freak out!! 😉 You’re talking about my comparison between IEW and LTW videos. But also when I made those videos, IEW didn’t have their current style and structure for high school. They also have other high school writing books. I still don’t know if they have the in depth persuasive writing curriculum like Lost Tools. But what Lost Tools offers is techniques according to the “5 Canons of Rhetoric”. So that’s the main difference. IEW May touch on those but they don’t go in depth like Lost Tools does. I went back to IEW bc my son needed to revisit mechanics! 😉 I hope that makes sense.

Oh I hope you do try again! I am so empathetic to what you’re going through. My 7th grader also wants to go to a school, but one of the reasons why that’s not an option for us is because we don’t homeschool for academics. We homeschool for discipleship. And that’s something the modern schools cannot provide. ADHD is tough. It wears on the parent for sure I view it as the sanctity one of my own spirit. I’m learning to be more compass, more patient. While also remaining tough bc for my daughter….she’s also quick to say, “I can’t do that bc I have ADHD.” That’s not going to fly in the real world. But having said that, we do have to find new ways of approaching things with them and it’s tough. And it’s exhausting. I feel for you. But nothing is impossible with God. Today, we watched a Douglas talks, and woowee, he is getting better and better and not scared to step on toes. I loved it. Lots of convo after. BTW I don't test anything that is memorized. I replaced her Reading and LA with Christian Light Education...best move of the year. My very independent daughter is so happy she can do most by herself and I love it because it is very thorough and very spiral. If your 3rd grader is independent, she may love CLE. Yes but only because CLE was so new to us. We actually just started with CLE Reading at first, along with IEW. We loved CLE's reading so much I added the LA too after Christmas. My daughter loves CLE LA more than Fix it Grammar (and she does enjoy Fix it Grammar) but we will most likely be finishing Fix It Grammar at the end of the year or sooner (because she doesn't need both and she likes CLE more) but keeping Structure and Style. Next year, I'm just planning on CLE for Reading and LA and then including IEW SS. She's my kid that wants to be taught and be done to move on with her day, and it's been a good fit. After using TGTB with her for 4 years, the spiral review in LA has been really good for her in CLE. CLE is advanced also, so I started her in level 3 and that's been good for her. They do have placement tests online as well...which are kind of long so I just had her do a couple pages and I could tell right away what worked and what didn't. I personally didn't think we would like CLE at all coming from TGTB, but I felt like it's worked really well and been a great year thus far. You know how some years you grind through the year with school and some you glide through...we are gliding and that's been refreshing after the prior year of grinding. Happy planning friend! Glad I could put another bug in your ear. 😉

Awe! Thanks!!! I think grammar is one of those areas where you could skip ahead. TGTB is spiral so it’s not like they won’t “spiral back” to anything that may have been missed. Having said that….I never did the old level 3 so I’m not sure what’s there vs the new level 4. If I were you, I’d download the level 5 and look at it on your computer. And then you can decide if you think it’s too advanced. But there’s also nothing wrong with just sticking with level 4. Might help boost confidence even more. Or you could skip lessons that you deem “too easy” and just go through it quicker. So many options here, IMO. You’ll have to decide what’s best, though, since you know your child the best. 😉

In my head, I guess I know what the priority is. So I start there. There are things I may have planned IF we could get it in. But when I plan my year, I have an idea of what the “nice to haves” are. For elementary years, it’s anything that’s not Bible, reading, writing, or math. Those are top priority. I don’t cut our history and science or art completely….I just adjust my timeline as to what we may do. And I end up kind of, loosely looping those things. (I hope that makes sense). For high school, I simply evaluate where we see, what’s necessary, and try to adjust according to interest. So for example, my son is a bit behind on his history (bc it’s a very heavy course). So I’m going through the remaining lessons next week and deciding which ones we will skip according to what I think will interest him. He won’t be interested in learning about Queen Victoria era, but he WILL be interested to learn about WW1 and WW2 and on. So I want to make sure he gets to those. The hard part of planning the school year is you never know what will go well, what will come up, and what might interest your child and take you in a completely different direction. I’m open to new directions if that directions is clear. But I have to plan first. Sometimes what I plan is what sparks an interest that takes us somewhere else. This is one reason for elementary I don’t have a formal history curriculum bc I know just reading historical biographies or like the early church history book we’re reading in our Bible time, will prompt more questions and we have get new ideas for things we want to explore. I might get a whim one week to do more art, so I may skip history and science all week to be creative. I hope that answers your question. (I feel like this could be a whole video ….my ideas on education and how I see it make it easier for me to let things go and just “trust the process” of being home, being more important than the academic checkboxes. 😉

I agree!!!! If I can convince my kids even to just take a gap year to figure out what they want to do, I think that’s so smart. I went to college to teach and after a year, decided it wasn’t for me (ironic, I know). But then I was lost. And there is so much pressure to just choose a major bc you have to graduate in 4 years or risk more college debt. It’s ok to just pause and be still. No rush. What is your opinion on IEW vs. EIW? My 4th grader is using EIW and learning a lot, and the videos are nice and short. I am tempted to try IEW because we love FIX It Grammar and their Writing is so popular, but I have heard the videos are much longer. So, if IEW is just as good, I don't see the need to switch, but if EIW is lacking something that IEW has, I would be willing to do the longer videos. Thanks for any insight!

@@OurHOMEschoolPlan Oh, I'm sorry!! I thought I remember one of your videos where you said your son did Essentials in Writing in the past as well as IEW. EIW spends the first half of the year going through all the grammar components, and then the second half of the year working through writing. The second half of the year is when I incorporate Fix It Grammar to keep his grammar concepts fresh. I can really see how my sons writing is taking off, and in the Jr. High and High School years they offer Literature and Writing Courses, and if you combine the 2 you have a full High School English course (is what their website says), however, I would likely still add a vocabulary/grammar. I can see EIW working for us long term, but the lure of IEW with its' popularity is what I am also drawn to. ;)

It definitely teaches a process. But some people also think it can hold back a talented writer by being a little too mechanical (unless that talented writer can figure out how to use what it teaches without hindering the creative process….it’s hard to explain if you haven’t used it. 😂) But my middle schooler, though she needs to learn to write, she’s very much a relic tang writer which is why my ears are always perked up to a different curriculum. Next year I’m going to have an even more interest based year for him. You and I are thinking alike. I keep thinking….”Benjamin Franklin educated himself….so did Thomas Jefferson. Their mothers didn’t buy them curriculum and grade it for them.” At some point, they have to take control of their education. And seriously…..colleges do not put much stock in your GPA. Right now I’m government schools, kids are just getting passed along and education isn’t the same quality it was even 25 years ago! Colleges know this. And they know grades are sooo subjective. So they look at test scores of more standardized tests like the ACT/SAT. I recently heard Sarah Mackenzie and Andrew Pudewa talking about their former high schooler homeschoolers, who’ve done VERY WELL in college…..yeah they didn’t worry about grades either. I know I probably say this every comment….but you are so similar to me and your 13 yr sounds like a carbon copy of my 13 yr old. I just encourage you to simplify. I used to try to do too much and then I was overwhelmed, my kids were overwhelmed and homeschooling felt like a drudgery every day instead of the joy filled days I desired! So I started just doing the basics. And by basics I mean: Bible study, LA, math, and reading to them daily and then the rest of the day is filled with outside play, pursing hobbies and interests, etc. I don’t do any formal history or science either besides CC memory work. This is something I have just recently decided after reading The Four Hour School Day (forgetting the authors name, but this book earned a spot on my shelf!). She has 8 kids and basically did what I described above! Stuck to the basics (the 3 R’s) with no formal history/science until later years depending on the kid and their future ambitions. I WANT to buy formal history and science. There are so many fun ones out there but my kids - all of them - in general aren’t “academic”. They LOVE to learn, but not through “book work”. They will ALL listen to me read for way longer than I ever imagined possible! I was talking to my current 5th grader about next year and in particular history and science. I showed her Beautiful Feet Books, Sonlight, America’s Story from Masterbooks. No, no and no. She just wants to read books about things she wants to read about. She suggested we read through the whole I Survived series, as well as read books from the “Who was” series and then we recently discovered the You Choose history series and she loves those and wants to read those books too for history. I’m going with it. Sit and read books to my kids??? Yes, please. No pressure of planning, worksheets that my kids hate or anything of the like! We will just read. It sounds heavenly! My 6&8 yr old will join if they wish and go play if they don’t want to listen. I asked her what she wants to learn about for science and it’s always animals so I will probably do some animal unit studies with her and the littles can join or not. Or maybe I will just let her read books about animals! I’ve truly bought into the idea that kids k-6th-ish (possibly even to 8th grade depending on the kid) grade don’t need formal science and history curriculum! There are so many other ways they can use that time they would be doing more curriculum! I’m truly leaning this way for next school yr as I start to plan for next year. Now about the 13 yr old. Challenge has been the BEST thing for her as far as her attitude. I KNOW we would be having the same kind of year without having an outside source giving her her assignments and having that positive peer pressure every week to bring quality work to class. It has truly been the best thing for her and got her out of that teenage attitude funk. I’m not saying CC is the answer but I really do think (just from my daughter’s experience) that outsourcing her work and classes some could make a huge difference. And stop TGTB math 😂 haha. I wouldn’t touch that math with a ten foot poll for this particular child. It is WAY too busy and way too much. Her brain would feel like scrambled eggs afterwards and I cannot imagine fighting daily through math for an hour or more. It just isn’t necessary!!! Is your daughter going to do something that involves needing math on a daily basis (besides basic math of course!)?? If no, then lower your standards for the sanity of you all. 😂 I highly recommend Masterbooks math. I was worried it wouldn’t be enough practice or wouldn’t have enough review but I’ve been pleasantly surprised that neither of my concerns have been an issue at all. Let her take the placement test and start her where she places even if it is way lower than where you think she should be. My daughter started in level 3 and then I realized she should have started in level 2, so I went back and we did level 2 at an accelerated pace, then restarted 3, did 3 a second time, did 4 and then did 4 again at an accelerated pace (just to solidify concepts) and she just started level 5 after Christmas! But she’s making progress and doing way higher math than I ever thought possible with her when we were floundering through math curriculums with her (Horizons, Saxon and CLE before Masterbooks). I could go on and on but since I’ve written a novel, I’ll stop here! Homeschooling this child has been the most infuriating experience with homeschooling but I do believe we’ve FINALLY turned a corner with her and we are FINALLY on the right path with this child!!!! Email me if you want to talk more. ❤
