2023 Korean Classics: Short Story and Movie
Nov. 27 at Tateuchi East Asia Library, University of Washington
The Korean Cultural Center in Los Angeles (Director Sangwon Jung) hosted the “Korean Classics: Short Story and Movie” event in collaboration with the Publication Industry Promotion Agency(KPIPA) at Tateuchi East Asia Library of University of Washington.
The event focused on the representative Korean short story "Mama and the Boarder" and featured Bruce Fulton, the editor of the recently published Korean literature anthology "The Penguin Book of Korean Short Stories," the first Korean literature included in the world-renowned 'Penguin Classics' literary series. Bruce Fulton, also a professor at the University of British Columbia, participated in the event by reading and conducting a Q&A session on his English translation of "Mama and the Boarder." Following the reading, there was a screening of the film "사랑방 손님과 어머니" (1961), directed by Shin Sang-ok. Additionally, a 'Korean Book Café' was set up for participants to explore various Korean literary works and experience Korean culture.
The Korean Cultural Center in Los Angeles will continue to plan diverse programs showcasing outstanding literary works, authors, and translators to widely promote the charm of Korean literature within the local American community.
