SEAT COMFORT - commenting because i hope this gets seen by the viewers (I own a new CX-5 Signature, I do work at a dealer, and sit in the CX-50 almost daily, reminding me the seats are WAY more comfortable in the CX-50, IMO) Definitely still happy with my choice overall, for my reasons, but I found it so interesting both of you mention the seats on the 50 so much, I can't stress enough, how much more the 50 seats are comfortable to me, over the 5. subjective it is for sure! like they said, go sit and see for yourself :)

I recently test drove both vehicles back to back (both turbos). I really preferred the more aggressive look of the CX-50 going into the dealership. However, after sitting in both, I found that the lower roofline of the CX-50 made the interior cabin seem smaller than the CX-5. ( I am 6 feet tall, so this may not be an issue for most). I also found the seats in the CX-50 to be uncomfortable, the issue being that raised stitching that goes down the middle. It was really annoying! Lastly, my impression was that the CX-5 was more nimble and fun to drive. So no surprise, I ended up purchasing the CX-5 Signature. Thanks for this really helpful review!

Great review! Just what I was looking for. I spec'd out a CX5 Turbo vs CX50 Turbo w/convenience package and the price was almost the same (trying to compare same priced builds). With the CX-50 you get the panoramic moon roof vs standard moon roof, 20'' wheels vs 19'' wheels, heated side mirrors, a bit more cargo space, higher towing limit, a wider wheel base, and fake engine noise. With the CX-5 you get a more premium interior, power folding side mirrors, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, and Bose premium Audio. I'd lean more toward the CX-5 as a daily commuter due to the more upscale feel of the vehicle. The fake engine noise in the CX50 is particularly annoying.

Idk if it was different for 2023 but, my 2024 CX-50 Turbo Premium has the heated/Powered (folding) side mirrors, heated steering wheel, Bose Premium Audio, etc.. The only thing it doesn’t have that you listed is the heated back seats. But the Premium Plus has all of that. I think it depends which trim options you go with for either model. As for the interior, the CX-50 is about as premium as the CX-5 and looks more modern. That said, the interior on the CX-5 did feel more solid to be fair. Has less “creaks” or play in certain trim areas. Unfortunately for me I was on borrowed time and couldn’t wait 2 weeks for more options to arrive at the dealer. The CX-50 has more interior plastic overall cause it’s supposed to be rugged or for “off-roading” which is bullshit. They should’ve marketed it as a standalone model with the same treatment as the CX-5 (another addition basically). As for performance, that’s where I preferred the CX-50. The wider + lower stance, wider wheels, stiffer suspension, and heavier steering, made it feel more sporty ironically. The CX-5 actually felt better over bumps, gravel roads, and longer drives. Mainly due to the softer suspension (multi link) and thicker tires. The CX-50 felt better on road when going through tighter corners and flatter surfaces. Can’t go wrong with either. But to your point, I do feel that you have to be more gentle with the CX-50 interior despite it being touted as the more rugged option sadly.

i looked at both when shopping and ultimately went with the CX-5. I really liked the CX-50 more girthy masculine look but what sealed the deal was that I am 6'2" (long torso) and the CX-50 has a lower sloping roofline so I just barely had enough head room when adjusting the seats to its lowest placement. I could feel my hair grazing the top. so annoying. CX-5 still had additional head room without adjusting the seat to its lowest position. Leg room is or about the same in both. IMHO, i am fine without the touch screen and grew to like it better just using the knob. Its less distracting. In additon, No fingerprints or smudges on the touch screen which can be clearly seen with sunlight glare. After learning the command center dial, I learned to appreciate it. it was just easier than reaching out to the touch screen while driving and after a bit, can use the dial without looking at the buttons around it. If they had both the dial and touchscreen available, i would still be using the dial. Tall drivers should go with the Cx-5. The turbo engine is better if you have a bit of a lead foot and overtaking cars on the pass.

One thing I’ve noticed though is having smart key entry with the actual button vs sensors on the handles does work better and has less or no intervenes. With the button it works every time. With the sensor, if cars dirty and salt or ice covers the handle or if it freezes bad like how it can be in the Canadian winters here, it may not always work. Or if you got thick gloves or gloves in general on and you place your hand on the handle it may not always sense it right. As current owner of a CX50, the review is bang on. Coming from CX9 (2017), I noticed the following: the overhead display quality has improved significantly previously it used to disappear once I put sunglasses. The 360 camera is perfect as it is impossible to see the front of the car. Actually, I was scared about the seats but they are ok much wider than the CX5 but harder than the CX9. Things that no one is mentioning is what written on the door label ''made by Mazda-Toyota corporation'' which is a very interesting selling point. My main disappointment is the fuel economy 8.8L/100KM for highway and almost 11 city is too much. Had the '21 CX-5 and now the CX-50. Love them both. However, the CX-50 has a sportier and smoother handle. Have never felt the middle seat stitching personally but may depend on how much cushion you have.😅 Also, I'm tall but once I lowered the seat, I was fine. Haven't regretted the CX-50. The only advantage the CX5 has for me is that it is higher so is easier for my elderly parents to get in and out.

I just put down a deposit on a CX5 that I hope to get around July or Aug of 2022. I looked at both the CX5 and CX50 but went with the CX5 because I felt that the differences weren't big enough to warrant spending the extra money to get things like leather seats. The CX5 offers leather seats in the Preferred trim level starting at $29k where as you have to pay at least $34k for leather seats in the CX50. I will also say that I have heard quite a few times that the Mazdas built in Japan are of better quality than the ones built in the US.

Just under 200000 trouble free miles I traded it in on a loaded 2019 CX5 without all wheel drive now in Fl. in 2019. The 2.5 liter makes a world of difference Just wished the interior was about 5 inches longer. This new model seems like they have been listening to owners of the CX5

The CX-5 is made in 🇯🇵 and the CX-50 is made in Alabama. I think that in this case, I agree with Scotty (the car mechanic) who claims that cars made in Japan are better quality. And although I don't think the CX-50 is ugly, it certainly is not as elegant as the CX-5.

This revised CX-5 model was the first to include the S-curve seats that Mazda developed from their poorly named R&D study into seat ergonomics (they called it the Seat Feeling Evaluation - maybe just badly translated from Japanese). Regardless the seat first appeared in Mazda 3 and CX-30 and including in this model CX-5, most Australian reviewers are calling it a revelation and most likely one of the most significant upgrades. The study produced a lot of optimised angles that a body is meant to be positioned at for optimal driving. Might be a bit of ergonomic fluff talk but I suspect they’re using that study for the auto positioning seats in the CX-60 that ask for and remembers a drivers height then uses the camera to both detect the driver then put the driver in an optimal position automatically for both road visibility, distance from pedals and arm reach height. German reviewers have remarked that Mercedes had attempted a similar thing and failed so we will have to wait and see if the Hiroshima engineers can trump Stuttgart

We bought a 2022 CX-30 after going back and forth between it and the CX-5, both in top trim level turbo. We liked some things better on each of them, but the deciding factors for the CX-30 were the handling and the seats. They fit both me and my wife, at 6’1” and 5’2” better than the seats in the CX-5. More comfortable and better at holding you in place in the corners. But the CX-5 probably would have been a better fit for the average American butt and it’s amble proportions. I wish we could have also tried out the seats in the CX-50, but the engine in my wife’s BMW forced our hand.

@@michaelpaver3788 interesting insight. Great then than the new CX-5 pulls over the CX-30 seats. The "average American" probably also holds true for the "Average Australian". It would be nice if Mazda (and other Japanese brands) considered making larger seats for our regions given that body shape is one of their concerns. That said, my family is 1/2 Japanese and 1/2 Australian, so one side would not be looked after unless there was a happy medium.

We just bought a 2022 CX 5 Signature Edition after driving the CX 50 turbo. It seems that most comparison reviews are pretty good at expressing the metrics of the two vehicles plus some driving impressions but never get at the true difference between the two. Like excellent chefs, Mazda has served up two very different styles of the same dish. Sure, one is more urban and the other is more outdoors oriented but they also are two completely different driving feels. The CX 5 is a nimble euro inspired world car. Ride compliance and driving dynamics of the signature trim serve up a kind of value version of an Audi Q5 or BMW x3. Even the layout and cargo capacity are close to the former. On the other hand, the CX 50 feels planted and slab solid. It's demeanor is much more purposeful than playful. It is easy to see why they are aiming it at the North American Market where trucks rule the roads and the back trails. This is not to say that it is truck like but, well, I hope you get the idea. I will add that Dan Neil would do a much better job of communicating the soul of these two vehicles then I. BTW, the Signature trim of the CX 5 is very different then the lower CX 5 trims except, possibly, for the Turbo Trim. If you really want a true luxury car feel, find the extra bucks to get the top trim. We had been driving Audi's since 2007 and the Signature trim was the only one that really started to compete with the Audi. We also got a $500 conquest discount for trading in a "target" product. (2015 Audi A3) Now if they can make their seats as comfortable as Audi seats.... I understand that Mazda is planning to go full luxury. The execution of the Signature Trim CX5 tells me that they will get there. Oh yeah, our new CX 5 is not my favorite Mazda. That honor goes to my 2009 MX 5. I'll probably be buried with that car!

I would personally go with the CX-50 over the CX-5, though I don't think either one is a bad car at all. The CX-5 is a great car if you're someone with kids. It blends practicality and fun far better than any mini-van ever did. I personally own the CX-30 and for me it's the best of the bunch. I'm single, no kids, and I live in a dense city but I also love to go hiking and the CX-30 blends all of my needs perfectly. I'm going to take what is probably the less popular stance and say I think the CX-5 looks worse with the color matched cladding. Maybe it's just a trick of the light or would look different in person, but it looks like the cladding and body panels aren't even quite the same shade of white. Or maybe the cladding is slightly matte and the body is the normal clear coat gloss. If they do have a different finish then I would also worry that over time the cladding will start to wear and look even more different.

Great review! I own a Mazda3 premium and I have a solution for not turning on the DRLs. Mazda has an option to turn off the DRLs (which in this case is the main headlight) and manually you can turn on the parking lights. This will turn only the white LEDs on without the headlights turns off. Works flawlessly. Slightly confusing but works like a charm!

I ordered a CX-5 last March and it arrived in early July. My GT model in soul red with the luxurious white leather interior looks very upscale and classy. I test drove several SUV's before buying and IMHO, the Mazda CX-5 GT is far superior than the Toyota, Chevy, GMC, VW, Kia, Hyundai, Mitsubishi and Honda. Although it might be chump change for some, 50k is a lot of money for me! I spent 3 or 4 months test driving and reviewing SUV's and the CX-5 GT was the clear winner for me. Now that I have it, I am soooooooo happy that I didn't buy any other. Honestly no matter where I go, I always get tons of compliments on this beautiful vehicle. It's only been a couple of months but I have absolutely "zero" complaints so far. Man this vehicle is so freakin' comfortable and luxurious! After eliminating the others, it was a toss-up between the CX-5 and the CRV. It should be noted that I've owned several Honda vehicles, ATV's and a Side x Side. I can easily attest to Honda's awesome reputation for making rock solid reliable vehicles, however, the CVT in the Honda CRV feels completely unresponsive - almost boring, if that makes any sense. Furthermore, the Honda's interior is nowhere near Mazda's caliber. I mean not even close! I expected so much more from the Toyota Rav4. Seriously, it rides like a tank and I found the interior to be poorly designed. To me, everything about the Rav4 feels cheap! Please do not be offended if you own any one of the vehicles that I mentioned because nowadays, every car manufacture makes great vehicles. It's simply a matter of personal preference.

I drove a CX-50 today and it's bigger than the CX-5. The seats are extremely uncomfortable, and the stitching was like no other car I have seen. I liked the features, the panoramic sunroof and the layout of the dash. I just found it lacked the sophistication of the other cars in the Mazda line. I ended up driving a CX-9 and found it had a more pleasing ride and comfortable seats. If I had to choose between the CX-5 and CX-50 it would be a red soul CX-5 with parchment interior. But, I also would love an option in the CX-50 to have it without the cladding. Also, the sunroof in the CX-5 I drove had a really annoying buffering noise when it was open and driving around 35 to 40 mph that was a deal breaker for me. The CX-50 has a larger sunroof. So, it might not happen in that car? So, get a different seat option and have an option without body cladding, and I would get the CX-50.
