ASUS is killing it lately. I have a Flow X16 and it's basically the laptop I've been waiting for for 20+ years.

Found this laptop at my local Microcenter and have been using it for about a week. I tried and returned last year's model as the RTX 3060 was underpowered for a 4K display. This laptop has amazing build quality, runs completely cool and silent in standard mode, and the screen is gorgeous. Battery life is noticeably better than the gamer laptops I've tried and the 6 speaker system is the best I've heard on a Windows laptop. My only gripe is that the screen door effect on white backgrounds is very noticeable at close distances. Every laptop I've tested has at least one flaw and this seems to be one of the best. The miniLED models are brighter but the colors and perfect blacks on OLED are unmatched.

that's crazy you say that, I'm literally about to go pick mine up tomorrow(open box) at the Micro Center in Tustin California 😆! Those things are sooo hard to find. How are you liking it? Is it true that the 4080 underperforms in benchmarks or is it a beast as i hope 🤔?

I managed to buy this exact laptop over the weekend, found 1 in stock at my local Microcenter. I couldnt find it online or anywhere else so i jumped on it. Its amazing laptop, absolutely love. Its fast, its quiet, its powerful, its sleek. Just great. Its made my video editing WAY FASTER and SOO much smoother then using 2019 Apple Macbook Pro that had Windows running on it.

Since you're the only person online I've seen with this thing, if you wouldn't mind doing me a favor I'd love to know how the 4080 runs in it. Would you mind grabbing the 3DMark demo from Steam and running Time Spy on the highest performance profile for the laptop?

The System on Module v System on Chip thing is not quite what you described. The System on Module distinction refers to the fact that it's not 1 "chip" that contains the system. But rather a directly integrated "module" that depending on the processor is 1 or more chips. It's not a copyright issue. Qualcom and other manufacturers have been using the term "System on Chip" SoC for a long time

The unified memory architecture used by Apple is not new nor unique to Apple but they did popularise it. Apple were also not the first or only ones using System on Chip. On package memory will be more common on x86 moving forward. Lunar Lake seems to heavily lean on System on Package which means the SOC and Memory share the same substrate. In fact Intel play to have the Substrate have an inner core made of glass. I love this laptop😊 but I'll wait for another 2 years to get Arrow Lake with Thunderbolt 5 integrated.

I was mulling buying a Macbook Pro Max, but what made me balk was the fact that the bios being on the same SOC means that when bios gets corrupted, there is no way to boot up the device, rendering it one giant paper weight. And that is adding to the fact that when the ssd dies (runs out of cycles): the laptop is dead. When memory dies, the laptop is dead. For that kind of money it is a risk I simply will not take.

I mean, it's fantastic in nearly every way. I've come back to this video a few times trying to decide upon an upgrade path. But the soldered RAM is an absolute deal breaker for me. I'm currently running 24 GB of RAM on a significantly cheaper Aspire 5 and I blow past that constantly. 32 GB of RAM is just too much of a bottleneck. Times have changed, people used to say you'd never need that much memory on a laptop, but with AI tools becoming the norm and files becoming exponentially larger, it's quickly becoming an issue. And with Adobe Bridge eating up a whopping 16+ GB sorting through raw files (albeit, with high quality previews to differentiate between minute changes in focus and sharpness while looking at thousands of images before asking anything of an editing software) and Photoshop eating up the rest, I have to close one or the other, limiting me to a task at a time, opening and reopening Bridge everytime I need to move between photos. This isn't going to change when I upgrade and I'm not spending upwards of $2,000 to deal with a similar issue. It can play games and edit like a pro, but I can limp through that already. I want a seamless, premium experience for well upwards of $2,000 and it's just not going to happen with this device. Aditionally, the stylus is utterly useless with a screen that doesn't unfold to 180⁰, rendering the touch feature more of a frustrating gimick for graphic designers. Unless you're editing videos one at a time, I cant see this being useful to any other type of visually creative professional. It wasnt built with photographers, who routinely use my current workflow, or graphic designers in mind. But it is routinely reviewed by content creators that deal in specs and video editing software, leading to mostly fantastic reviews and recommendations to all creators. This, I believe, is a pretty major oversight. I may be wrong in how this laptop handles other tasks, but we'll never know and I'm not spending a couple grand to find out.
