Agree. I had a 2020 Outback XT (turbo). Great seat, super power, excellent ride. All three surpass my new 2023 Forester Limited. But on the Outback I disliked the large touchscreen. Too many submenus. Slow to respond also at times. Had to look all the time to see what and where. The Outback was more refined but I'm really enjoying the view of the road, the fun factor, the panoramic sunroof, and the "old-fashioned" toggle switches and climate dials/buttons of the Forester more. Fit and finish (upholstery stitching) better on the Forester (Japan-made). Getting far better gas mileage now too. Push the S button when accelerating onto highways for more uumph. The start-stop on the Outback was so rough and annoying when it re-started, I shut it off every time I drove. Much smoother on the Forester.

Thanks for this comparison! I’ve never understood why Subaru has both of this models in their lineup. They seem very similar but the bigger boxier Forester is grossly underpowered. It used to make sense when the Outback was a station wagon version of the Legacy sedan and the Outback was a more “rugged”, utilitarian vehicle. With the popularity of SUVs, Subaru has made the Outback look more and more like an SUV giving it more ground clearance, but it just looks like a tall station wagon to me. I wish they would give the Forester a better engine and better off-road capabilities with a Wilderness version since they now have the Ascent as a people hauler SUV.

I recently tested both cars with almost the same trim level/options you showed here. I ended up liking the forester a little better. The forester's lower power/weight ratio is most noticeable when on the highway. The Outback with the 2.5 just felt a little too sluggish when merging/passing and even thought these are CVT cars, it felt like the transmission was sort of hunting to find a gear it was happy with. The forester felt better at merging/passing and seemed to be happier at cruising speeds. I also like the slightly more open/airy interior of the forester. I do, however, prefer the exterior styling of the Outback. I didn't drive one but I'm guessing the turbo Outback would feel a lot better on the highway.

This is the first logical argument I’ve heard for the Forester over the Outback. The 2.5 is barely enough power, and weight difference could make or break for better drivers who don’t wish to add to congestion. The turbo won’t have the reliability. Personally I’m only 6’1” yet have trouble fitting in the Forester passenger seat. I sit between the doors(no armrest) and my knee rubs against the hard plastic connecting the dash to the council. I had the 2020 Forester Premium w all options, then recently purchased the 2023 Outback Onyx XT. Difference is the lower ride on the Outback but it's not overly drastic. More premium interior with a very generous amount of "Vegan Leather" the kind you can throw water on , etc. Also have a wood grain they put in from the factory instead of the cushion/gloss black trim, a bit odd but okay. Ironically with the big screen I love the outback for the ability to turn that screen off and focus on the center speedometer area which tells me all I need to know, the map, gas distance and music are all there in front of me. I keep the eye candy when my wife wants to fiddle with the controls as we're driving but when alone I keep it off. LOTS of room, I have gone to Costco and w the back seat protector (a must, pay the $ or ask the dealer to throw it in), never had a problem w the cargo. Also suggest you get the brake assist thingy where the car beeps if you get too close going forward or backing up and will brake before you hit anything, esp if you're over 50 y/o. Engine is worth the difference in price, it's a nice ride, and less engine noise than the Forester. You lose the panoramic/larger moon roof, but let's be honest, if you're the driver, you can't really see that back there anyway. Plus I like using the tilt for the wind in the smaller moon roof. Btw, even if you have the 6 speaker system, you can get a really good sound out of it, go to the bass enhancer and fiddle with controls, miles above the Forester. I suspect they keep the Harmon Kardon in there but don't add the amp/speakers. Suspected this on my Forester because my phone kept saying "Harmon Kardon" even though I didn't have it.

30 year master mechanic here - there is no comparison between Subaru and Toyota and Honda. Toyota is a superior product reliability wise. Honda, while has had some issues is still extremely reliable. Subaru is historically a product that has had reliability issues since arriving in North America many decades ago. I like to compare Subaru to the Chrysler of Japan. Chrysler is an okay product and has fiercely loyal buyers, but historically reliability isn’t always favorable. Much like Subaru. Subaru struggles with oil consumption and leaks, battery and electrical issues, fuel pumps, valve guide leaks, NVH issues, cvt failures. All issues on modern Subaru’s. If you’re one that keeps a vehicle for 5 years or so and drives less than 100k miles Subaru is a good choice if you really like their products. Aside from that if you drive more there are significantly better offerings from Toyota and Honda for long term reliability.
