I was never DCI but played in high school. Learn to read sheet music first if you can since a lot of lessons online will have you follow along with a visual, but if you can learn by ear more power to you! Get a practice drum pad if you want (the one from Remo runs for like 25 bucks), a pair of sticks and a metronome (there's apps like Soundbrenner). Look into traditional stick grip and hold your sticks about an inch under its logo, this is the point where the stick's weight will do most of the work for you Master the basics like hitting quarter notes, 8th notes, 16th notes on beat while alternating sticking and get in the habit of counting rhythm your head. Practice paradiddles and other exercises for more complex sticking patterns. Mess with stick height and dynamics. Look at fun stuff like buzzes, rimshots, skanks, rolls Wear ear protection if you move onto the loud gear, I'm still beating myself up for not doing so and the constant ringing is my annoying reminder even 10 years later But it's super fun and clearly I miss it lol. Hope you get into it, learn more than I ever did and have fun!

I’d also recommend once you’ve gotten good at the basics to start looking at DCI music and use it to learn new stickings, rudiments, and rhythms. Lastly, I’d recommend the Evan’s real feel as a starter pad. It has enough rebound so you can get used to playing, but not so much so you can build your muscles/chops.
