No factory winch, IFS with open diff, and the weight of a diesel up front? No, it's not a direct competitor for the PW. A better comparison is against the Tremor. These are trucks for people who want to tow first and off road second. The PW is the opposite, for people who want a softer more flexy truck and don't care about HD level tow ratings. Everyone makes a big deal about 35” tires. Tires sizes can definitely be a little confusing, but the bottom line is that a 35” tire is somewhere between 3/4 of an inch to 1 inch larger in diameter than a 33”, and they are significantly heavier. If the truck comes from the factory equipped with 35’s, great. But if it comes equipped with 33’s, changing to 35’ doesn’t make much difference when off-roading, but it makes a big difference in performance, mostly negative.

You’re talking about the Ram PW? It’s a specialized vehicle for off-roading and therefore payload is limited by the suspension as you need softer and lighter suspension for off-roading. As for this 2500 ZR2 Bison, it’s all the armor that add a few hundred pounds to the vehicle and therefore lower the payload. The diesel engine also weighs quite a bit vs gas engine. And yes, payload is the maximum weight you can safely carry. Farm land and stuff maybe no big deal but if you overload a truck driving 70+ mph or something, you’re in for a lot of troubles.

There are times that I am driving for hundreds of miles in blizzard conditions on closed roads (Don't worry. I'm not breaking the law. I have emergency travel authorization). The biggest impacts to my travel are icy roads and deep snow drifts. I am often in life threatening travel conditions and frequently performing roadside rescue for stuck vehicles. Power Wagon = Jeep articulation but about as useful as a 1500 in terms of payload and towing. A Power Wagon has all of about 1600lbs payload. 1/2 tons have a higher rating than that. ZR2 has less Jeep level of articulation but way more HD truck capable. Payloads are only slightly less than a non ZR2 HD, you can still order plow prep and 5th wheel prep, and you can get both gas and diesel engines. Same can be said for the Ford Super Duty Tremor (but you can't get plow prep on those), an off road capable and HD rated truck. GM is planning a Trail Boss HD so there should be a more affordable off road ready HD on the way, and I'm sure the DSSVs will probably be able to be installed on that truck.

It's still a hideous looking Chevy. Them 6.6 engines burn a lot of oil. Gonna burn about 3qrts every 5k miles brand new right off the lot. Chevy is made for the pavement and looking pretty. The Colorado sucks off road also. Buddy of mine has a Colorado ZR2 and had to have it towed back home. Leave the off roading, Towing, and work to Ford and Ram.

Yes some early build 6.6 gas engines used oil but the reality is the majority of 6.6 gas engines do not have oil consumption issues. If Ford and Ram didn't have their own list of issues you could throw shade. Just because your buddy had a problem does not change the fact that the Colorado ZR2 is an awesome off-road truck.
