On Tuesday, May 7, 2024, during the annual observance of Correctional Workers' Week, the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) paid tribute to the agency's 26 fallen heroes with a memorial service at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC.
Before more than one hundred and fifty guests, FBOP Executive Team members, and headquarters employees, Department of Justice Principal Associate Deputy Attorney General Marshall Miller gave the keynote address. Director Colette S. Peters provided the commemoration for the solemn service and Linda Geter, Assistant Director for Correctional Programs, read the name of each of the Bureau’s 26 fallen heroes. As each name was read, a rose was placed on the bronze medallion in the center of the Memorial, and a bell rang.
The memorial service was conducted entirely by FBOP employees, with Deputy Director William W. Lothrop serving as the Master of Ceremonies. Ceremonial honors were performed by the FCI Cumberland (MD) Honor Guard, reflection music and the song, "Amazing Grace," was provided on bagpipe by Joel Bristol, Correctional Counselor, FCI Englewood (CO), and "Taps" was played by Kim Cruikshank, Attorney, Central Office. Additional employees from headquarters sang the National Anthem (Joseph Plese, Education Program Specialist) and provided the Invocation and Benediction (Chaplain Zubair Yousif).
