OMG, Mike. Phantasy Star was absolutely HUGE in Brazil because it was translated to Portuguese, in a time when most games were not translated. Very fond childhood memories playing that one. So nice to see more people that played the game and were influenced by it...

And how could I forget about Carbon 2185 by Dragon Turtle Games. Just was the GM for a fun 6 hour Game of it two weeks ago. It was really fun. (It's a 5e Cyberpunk) It also has a "Mini-Game" to determine how a PC's live went until they left the regular live behind and became a "Cyberpunk". It's a bit like the one in Traveler but less complex and faster. And as far as I know it's not possible to die before the game starts. But one player still lost an eye and a hand and another got some negative modifications for being middle aged. But this PC had good starting gear for his long time as an employee of a Mega Corp. ( I know in new editions of Traveler nobody dies at character generation any more , but I never played the new editions, only the old ones ^^)

To your tableless random die rolls, you can also add the dimension of even/odd (maybe when you're trying to determine if the random is related or not). If it's low and even, it means one thing. If it's low and odd, another. High/even, High/odd. *Then* you could play the game of subsequent rolls being high/low in comparison the previous roll, and factor in even/odd again (two subsequent odds making an even). Shenanigans.

This seems like the right level of overloaded die for my games. I might even do something for prime numbers or even square numbers and treat it as a flag to make the encounter extra weird/combative/dismal as the setting dictates.

Loved this. I forgot all about using dice rolls for reactions in random (and not so random) encounters. For a long time, I've been just improvising activities and reactions based pretty much on my mood or the mood of the table...but it's time to bring back the excitement of uncertainty that comes with a die roll. I have the all the different books you used for example tables, so I have no excuse for not using them...but my laziness level makes your tableless die rolls pretty darn attractive. Thanks!

I just took a quick glance at the free rules, and all I saw was they either tweaked certain rules to make them more potent, or they added some. The classes seem to get two or three abilities per level. That's cool for someone who has already been playing for a while, but I often introduce new players and the most common problem with them (even with just the 2014 PHB) is the mental overload that comes with too many decisions. So I'm still on the fense with the new edition.
@JazzyBassy

On the other hand, rule clarity improved quite a bit. The Rules Glossary in alphabetical order is pretty nice digitally, and the way the rules are broken up into blocks with a bolded name makes it more readable. As DM’s that have run 5e for a while, we forget that there is no such rules glossary in the original 2014. A lot of the rules were changed to make them clearer and easier to read with less conditionals. Some of the “added” rules are things that were on the Dungeon Master’s Guide but now are Player Facing, decreasing “Mother May I?” Dm fiat situations. Weapon Mastery and how attacks work is the main bigger expansion to the rules, and I’d say the only thing that would increase mental overload, but honestly it was sorely wanted for martials to have some fun in getting to do the impact spellcasters can. Spellcasters already had to choose their starting cantrips and spells, so choosing masteries is only increasing that load for those thar didn’t need to do that already. Outside of that, I disagree with the increase of mental overload for level 1, there are actually less choices for mental overload in level 1, with subclasses all being chosen at level 3, barely-different lineages rolled into the full species, a lot of prebuilt kits through backgrounds, class, suggested spells, and suggested wep masteries.

I’m not planning to switch - I’m just taking some of the clearly better ideas (e.g., surprise) and sticking with the system we’ve already been using which is a heavily house ruled 5e by way of the kitchen sink 😄

@@JazzyBassy I think there might be a little bit more in way of decisions to make at level 1 on the average if only because you need to consider your origin feat and possibly weapon masteries somewhat complicate weapon choices (IMO in a good way instead of weapon X has bigger hit die, use that). It's pretty close considering the subclasses move, though that only affects a few classes. The thing is the PHB it-self is WAY better for a new player. Chapter 1 actually tells you how to play the game upfront and with great examples and advice. It's not just a technical slog through rules jargon. And then the chapter on building your character takes you through it step by step. If players are struggling to build characters maybe start them off on a simpler game like Shadowdark, or start them with a progenerated character and help them customize it a little. I think overall this is much better for new players especially with many streamlined mechanics.

Though Broken Weave is very, very different, there are aspects of its take on post-Apocalyptic/Apocalyptic Fantasy that remind me of Earthdawn. I guess Earthdawn was a post-post Apocalypse, as it's about people coming back into the world after an age where the world was dominated by Lovecraftian "Horrors." But in doing so, they're trying to rebuild the world and raise the overall positive feelings. As your character advances, you work on improving the overall spirit of the world.

I'm really curious how Broken Weave compares in home building to Mutant Year Zero and Stonetop (once it finally exists for real). Not so much in engine (I know 5E and Y0E and PbtA are wildly different) but in how home development is gamified and how the settlement changing is brought into the wider exploration story.

I kid, I kid, Broken Weave sounds great, and have been looking at doing short campaigns and trying other games once the current campaign ends that I wouldn't otherwise have time to run a full campaign in (ie Spelljammer), and it sounds like just the thing to try. I've used Unchartered Journeys in my current game, which went well, but haven't used A Life Well Lived, though I like that book a lot.

I would not consider it fully functional. Drop-down options are not listed for various class abilities. Other coding statements are showing up in the character sheets. There is a large list in the forums of what isn't working or functional. With the list of what needs to be done, I am doubtful it will be working as fully functional by the time of general release on DnD Beyond. I have absolute sympathy for the coders though given how this was rolled out and the forum mods who are on the front line of this.

Yeah there are definitely lots of things that either need work arounds or we'll have to manually deal with in the mean time like the Artificer currently cannot prepare 2024 spells even though you should be able to play an Artificer in a 2024 game via backwards compatibility, at least until a 2024 Artificer is released. I guess we might have to make homebrew copies to make new spells work for the class or something.

That app can likely also phone home and invalidate your books if it wants to, and the data is locked down in a way that other apps can't be built to interpret and read and display those books. So yes, you can store a local copy, but only within the rules of the app they have made for you.

Broken Weave is great and I enjoyed the review! When you get a chance to give it more than a skim I think you’ll find even more innovative ideas on creating generational campaigns where the haven lives on while the characters die. The time passing mechanics support this, but the new classes themselves mostly have one use, highly dramatic abilities at high levels that then kill or retire the character, and provide bonuses for future characters in that community. No broken high level play or immortal characters to be found here!
