Oh boy. So, if you thought that Dodge ending production of the iconic Hemi V-8 engine and announcing it was going electric for the next-generation Charger was the final nail in the coffin of red-blooded American muscle car enthusiasts everywhere, you could not have been more wrong. We’ve just had a look at the production versions of the 2024 Dodge Charger coupe and sedan (yep, the Charger is a coupe again!), and we’ve come away mightily impressed.
The numbers are fantastic. Up to 670 horsepower. Zero-to-60 mph in 3.3 seconds. A 100.5-kilowatt-hour battery pack that’ll fast-charge from 20%-80% in 28 minutes. A curb weight of 5,800 pounds … OK, those last two numbers aren’t stellar. But wait, there’s more: If you don’t want an electric Charger, wait until 2025, when the Hurricane twin-turbo inline-six-cylinder gas engine gets dropped under that shapely retro-styled hood. The standard-output Hurricane will make 420 hp; the high-output version will do 550 hp.
That performance is wrapped up in swoopy new styling that uses the same body regardless of whether you pick a coupe or sedan. All Chargers are now hatchbacks, too, so cargo room is huge. The interior is also completely new and, like the rest of the car, looks a lot like the 2022 Dodge Charger Daytona SRT Concept (which Dodge executives now admit wasn’t actually a “concept” at all). And yes, the Fratzonic chambered exhaust from the concept made it to production, but we haven’t heard it yet; that’s still coming.
Cars.com Detroit Bureau Chief Aaron Bragman got a first look at the new 2024 Charger and came away impressed. Here, he takes you through the all-new electric coupe and sedan (while the Sixpack gas models come in early 2025, the Daytona electric coupes arrive for the summer of ‘24), so get ready for a wild ride - the American muscle car brand isn’t dying, it’s just changing with the times.
