While many classmates elected to attend Langston University, a historically Black college in Oklahoma, Barbara chose the University of Oklahoma because it was important to her that the state’s flagship university represent all people of the state. During her time at OU, she established strong relationships with people of all backgrounds, which raised her curiosity and understanding about the larger world and her place in it. Her desire to create change remained with her at OU, when she and other students picketed the John A. Brown department store in Norman, again inspired by Mrs. Luper. After graduating from OU in 1963, her commitment to social and economic change was stronger than ever, and it was while pursuing her master’s in economics at the University of Illinois that she found her true calling - higher education.
